This Week On Treasure Island Oldies

This week on Treasure Island Oldies
April 26th, 2010 to May 1st, 2010

Things are getting very exciting around the Island as we get ready for our 13th Anniversary Special next Sunday, May 2nd. I know you won't want to miss this special celebration. And I welcome your participation in this special event. Call the Treasure Island Oldies 24/7 Listener Line at 206-203-4678 and record your greeting; or send your thoughts and wishes via email to michael@treasureislandoldies.com an. Either way I will read your email or play back your telephone message on the show next week.

Some regular listeners are either not feeling well or are on the mend. Best wishes for a speedy recovery go out to Craig Smith in Newmarket, Ontario, who just got home from the hospital; and to Guylaine Coté in Quebec City, Quebec, who is getting over recent surgery. Finally, get well wishes go out to George Mooth in Edwardsburg, Michigan. I hope you all feel 100% again very soon.

There have been some recent comments made to a posting I did almost four years ago in September 2006 at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog regarding the passing of Jamie Lyons from The Music Explosion. The first comment was from Jack Brooks who said "I'm Jack Brooks, 3rd and last bass player for the British Walkers. If these folks listed on Wikipedia as the members of The Music Explosion were indeed the members mentioned above, none of them were ever members of The British Walkers: James "Jamie" Lyons (singer, percussion) Donald Atkins (guitar) Richard Nesta (guitar) Burton Stahl (bass) Robert Avery (drums)". Today I heard from Burton Stahl who wrote "Jack, My name is Burton Stahl. I am the original founding member of the Music Explosion. We cslled (sic) ourselves the British Walkers after the shoe style. I think we kept the name for a few months. We changed it from the chosen few and then went to the Music Explosion." Amazing to receive these comments so after the fact. But it is not surprising, as our Blog has such high results when doing a Google search for "oldies blog". In fact, try it for yourself; you'll find that Treasure Island Oldies Blog is either #1 or #2 out of millions and millions of results!

I had the pleasure of being at a lunch in Vancouver last week for over 65 radio broadcasters. The event is called RPM (Radio Performers Membership), which I started with Rock & Roll Hall of Fame DJ Red Robinson many years ago. What a treat is was to see so many old friends I have known for many years including Steve Herringer, Stirling Faux, Larry Hennessey, Roy Hennessy, Brian Antonson, and so many others. It had been a few years since the last RPM lunch, but the wait was definitely worth it. I look forward to the next time we all get together again.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing another great video clip for you again this week. I had a request from Vance in Everett, Washington, to play the B side of Johnny Angel by Shelley Fabares. I did play his request, Where's It Going To Get Me on this week's show. But I thought it would be fun to play the original A side hit. From TV's The Donna Reed Show, here is Shelley Fabares with Johnny Angel, our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Voice Your Choice is featuring a couple of songs by the pride of Shreveport, Louisiana, Brenton Wood. Both of his biggest of four hits were from 1967: The Oogum Boogum Song and Gimme Little Sign. Which would you like to hear? Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page by clicking the Voice Your Choice button on any page of the website. The winning song will be played in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

Have a good week.
Bye for now.

Brenton Wood - Voice Your Choice

Brenton Wood was born Alfred Smith on July 26, 1941 in Shreveport, Louisiana, and was raised in San Pedro, California. Although this R&B singer/songwriter/pianist only had four charted records on the Hot 100 in Billboard over a short two year span from 1967 - 68, his songs are very well remembered but nor heard all that often anymore.

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice spotlights Brenton Wood with two of his hits for your votes: The Oogum Boogum Song and Gimme Little Sign. Which song would you like to hear? Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page. We'll play the winner on next week's 13th Anniversary Special.

Shelley Fabares - Song of the Week

Shelley Fabares, along with Paul Peterson, was one of two teenage children on the Donna Reed Show, a TV sitcom from the early '60s.They both had hit songs on the charts, his biggest being My Dad. Her biggest hit song is what we are playing for you this week. Here then is Shelley Fabares with Johnny Angel, our Song of the week.

Janet Simonis sent a wonderful note to me via Facebook, which I would like to share with you. "Great station - I just found this station online. I wanted an oldies station that didn't play the same "oldies" songs over and over. Like the music!" Thank you Janet, and Welcome to the Island! And I would love to hear from you as well. You can get in touch with me via Facebook, Click the Requests button, or Call our 24/7 Listener Line at 206-203-4678.

Billy & Lillie - Voice Your Choice

Billy & Lillie were a duo from the east coast of the United States. Billy Ford was born March 9, 1925 in Bloomfield, New Jersey, while Lillie Bryant was from Newburg, New York and was born February 14, 1940.

They had a very short chart career, scoring only four hits in 1958 and 1959, but two of them have lasted through the Rock and Roll years. As the story goes, Dick Clark, when they were performing "La Dee Dah" on American Bandstand, liked their song so much that he asked the songwriters to write another song. Bob Crewe and Frank Slay came up with their third single release, "Lucky Ladybug".

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice features two of Billy & Lillie's hit songs: La Dee Dah and Lucky Ladybug.

Come to the Voice Your Choice page and cast your vote. The winning song will get played onnext week`s show.

Dion & The Belmonts - Song Of The Week

Dion DiMucci enjoyed a great career, initially as the lead singer of The Belmonts and then alter, as a solo artist. This week we're playing a great early hit of theirs, A Teenager In Love by Dion & The Belmonts, our Song of the Week.

Enjoy!

This Week On Treasure Island Oldies

This week on Treasure Island Oldies
Week of April 11th, 2010  April 17th, 2010

I must say that whenever there is a special on the show, it is a real treat. I really enjoy hearing from you with your requests, and this week's Annual One Hit Wonders Special was no exception. Excellent song requests came in both via the Listener Line and  email. Many of the songs requested had not been played on the show in many years and in a couple of examples, I just had not gotten around to playing them ever before. So thanks very much. And any time you'd like to hear a song, Call the 24/7 Listener Line at 206-203-4678 or Click the Requests button on any page of the website, and it doesn't have to be with regard to any special.

Speaking of specials, I am very excited, proud and extremely pleased to be celebrating the 13th Anniversary of Treasure Island Oldies with you on Sunday, May 2nd for the live show. The actual anniversary date is two days later on May 4th, but as that is not falling on a Sunday this year, we'll have our celebration on Sunday, May 2nd. It would be my honour to play back your anniversary greetings on the show. Just call the 24/7 Listener Line at 206-203-4678 and record your message.

Our Webmaster, Eddy Fisher, has begun the process of transferring our website and email to a new provider. He hopes that everything will be completed by next weekend, fingers crossed. We hope that there will not be any interruption of access to the website during this transition. However, there could be a few days of emails not getting through. If you send an email to me and it bounces back to you, please don't think I am being rude or ignoring you. Also, some emails could also get lost between the old and new provider. So if you are expecting an answer from me and don't get one within a couple of days, please re-send it. Once everything is moved to the new provider, everything should be back to normal. Normal?? Maybe abnormal is more like it! :-)

The Treasured Island Oldies Blog is playing a clip from the amazing T.A.M.I. Show, which has just recently been released on DVD. James Brown delivers one of the greatest performances of his career in this two song medley of Prisoner Of Love and Please Please Please. It's our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Voice Your Choice features the legendary Chuck Berry with two of his many hits, and amazingly one of which was his only Number One Song. Would you prefer to hear You Never Can Tell or My Ding A Lin? Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page. We'll play the winning song in the third hour of next week's show.

Happy Birthday to Raza, the son of Pickering, Ontario listener JJ. As it was our One Hit Wonders special, instead of The Beatles original version, we played Birthday by Underground Sunshine, the group that covered The Beatles classic in 1969. If you have a birthday coming up, let me know by sending your name, city and birthday date to michael@treasureislandoldies.com We'll play Birthday by The Beatles for you on the show.

Chuck Berry - Voice Your Choice

Chuck Berry was born Charles Edward Anderson Berry on October 18, 1926 in St. Louis, Missouri. He became one of the most influential recording artists, songwriters, and performers of the Rock and Roll era. His first record, Maybelline, was an instant success and he has never looked back since he got his start with Chess records.

He's been lauded with many awards including a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammy Awards in 1984, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, and many others.

He appeared on the charts a total of 27 times between 1955 and 1973. Surprisingly, he only ever had one Number 1 song in his career, despite scoring 7 Top Ten hits.

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice features Chuck Berry with two of his later hits and his only Number One song. Would you like to hear You Never Can Tell or My Ding A Ling? Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page. We'll play the song with the most votes in the third hour of next week's show.

James Brown - Song of the Week

The Godfather of Soul, James Brown, gave one of the greatest performances of his career when he performed live for the T.A.M.I. Show. For many years, the concert was not available commercially, except for the "grey market" copies. Fortunately, the film has been restored and the audio re-mastered and is available for the first time on DVD.

Here then is the hardest working man is show business, James Brown with an unforgettable performance of Prisoner Of Love and Please Please Please. It's our Song of the Week.  Sit back and be prepared to be highly entertained for over 8 minutes of high energy soul.

Enjoy!

Floyd Cramer - Voice Your Choice

Floyd Cramer was born on October 27, 1933 in the small town of Samti, Louisiana but raised in Huttig, Arkansas. Sadly he died of cancer on New Year's Eve in December 1997 at age 64.

For years, Floyd was the top session pianist in Nashville, Tennessee, having lived there since 1955. During the many years there he worked with the likes of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Perry Como, Chet Atkins, and so many others.

While a very much in demand studio player for other people's recording sessions, he still managed to have a sizeable number of hits of his own. He appeared on the charts a total of 11 times between 1958 and 1963, in fact he had three Top Ten hits and a Gold Record.

Voice Your Choice features Floyd Cramer with two of his many hits for your votes: San Antonio Rose and On The Rebound, both Top Ten hits. Cast your vote for the song you'd like to hear at the Voice Your Choice page. The winning song will be played on next week's show.

Ashton Gardner And Dyke - Song Of The Week

To get you in the mood for next week's One Hit Wonders Special on Treasure Island Oldies, here is a classic one hit wonder from 1971 by Ashton Gardner And Dyke with Resurrection Shuffle.
Enjoy!
