This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of March 31st, 2014

March 31st, 2014 to April 5th, 2014

I was pleased that several listeners noticed hearing some new jingles on the show this week. I try to keep the show sounding fresh after almost 17 years, and that’s not easy at times. LOL The jingles are an important element in the show overall and I appreciated you remarking on these new ones. Keeping the show fresh sounding is one of the reasons that there is the occasional Spontaneous Special, like the Sweet Soul Music show last week. Speaking of specials, next week it the Annual One Hit Wonders Special. If you’ve never heard this special in previous years, I am sure you will be surprised to hear so many songs you know and love. But what may surprise you is the fact that every artist or group you’ll hear on next week’s show will have only made one appearance on the charts. It’s hard to believe, but very true. So be sure to listen next week.

It was nice to welcome Caralee from Sacramento, California, to the Treasure Island Oldies Chat Room. She fit in great with the rest of the Nuts in the Hut, the Chat Room Regulars. We’d love to welcome you too. Click Chat on any page of the website and just follow the instructions.

It was very nice hearing from Bill Holmes, a new listener, but a seasoned music veteran. Bill played drums with Ronnie Dove and requested that I play One Kiss For Old Times’ Sake, a hit for Ronnie in 1965. I’d love to hear from you too. Click Requests button on any page of the website, Call the Listener Line at 206-339-0709, or send an email to michael@treasureislandoldies.com.

This week’s Top 5 Countdown is a milestone is music history. Never before or since this week in 1964 has every song in the Top 5 been by the same artist or group. It’s The Beatles who achieved this major music history event, and are those five songs by the Fab Four ever great!

Happy Birthday wishes go out this week to Ineyda Velasquez in Homestead, Florida, Red Robinson in Vancouver, British Columbia who is also in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and to my great life-long friend, Frank Vandeven in Lillooet, British Columbia. If your birthday is coming up, let me know so that I may send birthday wishes to you and play Birthday by The Beatles. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing Ashton Gardner & Dyke and Resurrection Shuffle. It’s a preview of what to expect on next week’s One Hit Wonders Special and our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Please note that Voice Your Choice will be pre-empted next week due to the One Hit Wonders Special but will return the following week.

Here’s the Rock and Roll News for the week of March 31st.

Bye for now.

Ashton Gardner & Dyke - Song of the Week

I played this song on the show this week as a preview of what to expect on next week's show when it's the Annual One Hit Wonders Special on Treasure Island Oldies. It's one of those songs that hit you the first time you heard it. And boy, it still sounds great today!

Here are Ashton Gardner & Dyke with Resurrection Shuffle. It's our Song of the Week.

This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of March 23rd, 2014

March 23rd, 2014 to March 29th, 2014

It seems I surprised a lot of listeners with the “Spontaneous Special” on this week’s show, Sweet Soul Music. As I was getting ready to prepare this week’s show, I started listening to some great R&B/soul music songs and thought HEY! The whole show should be all this great soul music. And wow to hear those great songs all in one four hour show! I’m glad you enjoyed it and in case you missed the Live show, be sure to listen to the Archive via the Listen page. For a snapshot of the songs, you can check out the Playlist too.

Our next official special will be the annual One Hit Wonders Live Sunday, April 6th and of course after on the Archives. If there’s a One Hit Wonder by an artist or group who only appeared on the charts once that you’d like me to play, let me know. Call the Treasure Island Oldies Listener Line at 206-339-0709 or Click Requests on any page of the website.

I was pleased to meet Bill Holmes Sr. at my facebook page. Bill was the drummer for Ronnie Dove for years. They toured for 2 to 3 months at a time, a hectic schedule for sure. I invited him to listen to the show and to stop by the Chat Room for a visit, knowing the others would be pleased to welcome him and get to know more about him and Ronnie Dove. It was a very nice visit and he told me that he’d definitely come back again as he thought the folks in the chat room were “regular guys” and very friendly. Now isn’t that a nice endorsement! You too should consider coming by for a visit during the Live show every Sunday from 6 to 10 pm Pacific time. Just Click Chat on any page of the website and follow the easy instructions. The Nuts in the Hut, the Chat Room Regulars, look forward to saying hi and getting to know you. You’ll be surprised with the variety of cities where everyone lives.

I have dedicated the show this week to the memory of Malcolm Charlton from QCCR-FM in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, one of our Broadcast Partners Network stations. Malcolm passed away after succumbing to cancer. While at different times, we worked at CFQR-FM in Montreal, my first radio station. Malcolm was also responsible for inviting me to have Treasure Island Oldies air on QCCR-FM, for which I am very grateful. My sincere condolences to his daughter Phaedra, his wife and family members. Also my thoughts go out to the staff at QCCR-FM and the listeners. Thank you, Malcolm. R.I.P.

Happy Birthday wishes go out this week to Rich Howe in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and to my long-time friend, creator and writer of the weekly Moment In Time feature, Tom Locke in Vancouver, British Columbia. If you have a birthday approaching, be sure to let me know so that I can wish you Happy Birthday on the air and play Birthday by The Beatles for you. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is also playing some Sweet Soul Music, in conjunction with our Spontaneous Special this week on the show. In fact, it’s the song that started off the show this week: Arthur Conley and Sweet Soul Music. It’s our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Voice Your Choice features Sir Cliff Richard, who was bigger in England than Elvis Presley! Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Living Doll or Devil Woman. I’ll play the winning song in the 3rd hour of next week’s show.

Here’s the Rock and Roll News for the week of March 23rd.

Cliff Richard - Voice Your Choice

Cliff Richard was born born Harry Rodger Webb on October 14, 1940 in Lucknow, India (of British parentage).  His family moved to England in 1948. As a teenager, he worked in skiffle groups during the mid-1950s. His backing band were called The Drifters but later changed their name to The Shadows, due to the American R&B group The Drifters. The Shadows disbanded in 1969.

To say Cliff Richard was successful in England would be a gross understatement. Superstar would be more appropriate as he had over 125 charted hits, including 14 #1 singles. He also became an actor starring in the British movies Expresso Bongo, The Young Ones, Summer Holiday and Wonderful Life.

In 1995 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. What a career!

Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice presents Cliff Richard with just two of his many hit records. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Living Doll or Devil Woman. I'll play the winner in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

Arthur Conley - Sweet Soul Music Song of the Week

This week on Treasure Island Oldies it's a Sweet Soul Music spontaneous special. I started off the show with Arthur Conley and Sweet Soul Music. And what a perfect song to play for you here at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

Here is Arthur Conley, in a clip from the Rick Shaw TV Show in Miami, Florida, with Sweet Soul Music. It's our Song of the Week.

Enjoy!

This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of March 16th, 2014

March 16th, 2014 to March 22nd, 2014

The playlist for this week’s show reads like a phone book of first names! It happens only once a year with the annual Name Game Special. If your name is Mary, Bobby, Rosie, Diane, Gina, Michelle, Jennifer, Bobby, Mickey, Reuben, etc., don’t miss out on hearing your song. Be sure to listen to the Archive and also check out the Playlist. My thanks to the many listeners who sent their email requests, phone requests on the Listener Line, and from the Nuts in the Hut in the Chat Room.

Our next monthly special will take place Sunday, April 6 when you’ll hear One Hit Wonders. These are songs by artists who had only one appearance on the Top 100 charts, and in many cases, made a big impact, but never to return again. You’ll be surprised by just how many big hits were by artists considered One Hit Wonders. If there’s a particular artist or group whose One Hit Wonder you’d like to hear, just let me know. You can Click the Requests button on any page of the website, send a note to me via michael@treasureislandoldies.com or you can call and record your request on the Treasure Island Oldies Listener Line at 206-339-0709. I’ll be waiting to hear from you.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to our weekly Rock & Roll Relic retriever, Rick Canode in Madison, Wisconsin, and to Joel Drucker in Randolph, New Jersey, as well as to Mike Cleaver in Vancouver, British Columbia. If you’ve got a birthday coming up soon, be sure to let me know. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com and I’ll wish you Happy Birthday on the show and also play Birthday by The Beatles.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is keeping with the Name Game Special theme with Roy Orbison in a great concert performance of Leah from Festival Hall in Melbourne, Australia. It’s our Name Game Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Voice Your Choice presents the pride of Cincinnati, Ohio, Carl Dobkins Jr. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page foreither Lucky Devil or My Heart Is An Open Book. I’ll play the winner during the 3rd hour of next week’s show.
