1910 Fruitgum Company - Voice Your Choice

The 1910 Fruitgum Co. were at the forefront of the "bubblegum movement". I say that with tongue firmly planted in cheek; however they were among the first bubblegum groups to score big on the charts.

The core of the group was lead singer Mark Gutkowski from New Jersey. Their producers Jerry Kasenetz and Jeff Katz, used the original line-up of Floyd Marcus, Pat Karwan, Steve Mortkowitz and Frank Jeckell, and of course, Mark Gutkowski, on their first two singles, Simon Says and May I Take A Giant Step (Into Your Heart). All of their additional hits were played by a revolving door of various studio musicians.

As a side note, that same production team also had their own hit with Quick Joey Small (Run Joey Run) under the name of Kasenetz-Katz Singing Orchestral Circus in 1968.

R&B Producer and Recording Artist Johnny Otis Has Died

Bandleader and producer Johnny Otis, who launched and then nurtured the careers of many of R&B's greatest singers, died Tuesday at his home near Los Angeles. He was 90.

Otis started out in the 1940s, leading a big band that scored a hit with its 1945 jazz recording "Harlem Nocturne." That group, like many big bands, soon broke up for financial reasons. After that, Otis organized a smaller unit, which played a hybrid of swing and blues that became known as Rhythm & Blues. Otis' Rhythm & Blues Caravan became the first R&B touring road show. Through his nightclub, his talent shows and his road show, Otis discovered singers such as Etta James, Little Esther, Jackie Wilson, Big Mama Thornton and Hank Ballard.

Otis was also an accomplished musician who sang several hits, including "Willie and the Hand Jive," which made it to the Top 10 rock 'n' roll chart in 1958. But he spent more time helping singers establish their own voices and develop their own hits.

In a 1989 Fresh Air interview, Otis talked with Terry Gross about touring as a musician with some of the biggest black acts of the 1940s and '50s, including Louis Jordan and Bill Kenny and The Ink Spots.
"Both of these people were so popular at the time that there was the same feeling that you feel when the curtain opens — that great anticipation," he said. "We were lucky enough to be the band."

Many audiences assumed Otis, who was a white Greek-American, was actually a light-skinned black man. While touring in the South, he said he never disabused anyone of that notion.
"In those days, many of the places we played — had they suspected I was white, we would have been arrested," he says. "Your life was on the line. When our bus would cross the Mason-Dixon line, a pall would fall over the entire show. Because we knew we were down there where we had problems."

Otis recalled one incident, when he was traveling with the singer Little Esther, now known as Esther Phillips. Phillips, who was only 13, stopped to use a restroom at a gas station.
"I looked up, and there's a guy with a gun in my belly, and he's shaking and he's all excited because the little black girl went to the white woman's bathroom," he said. "And I thought to myself, 'Any death but this.' But she came out and we went on down the road. But those things happened to us all the time."

Etta James Has Died At Age 73

Etta James, the singer who made “At Last” a classic and became one of the last survivors from early rock ‘n’ roll’s pantheon of soaring divas, died Friday at her home in Riverside, Calif., her manager said. She was 73.
She had been battling leukemia and dementia. Her final stage performances came in early 2010.

Over a 50-year career, James won four Grammy Awards and 17 Blues Music Awards. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 and was the recipeient of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

A feisty and outspoken personality off-stage, James was known for a singing style that ranged from the lush elegance of “At Last” to powerful rhythm and blues like “Good Rockin’ Daddy,” “All I Could Do Is Cry” and her first hit, “The Wallflower.”

She was admired by many of her fellow female artists for her struggles against a system that often undervalued and underrated female performers.

The cost of that struggle was reflected in her lifelong struggle against several extended drug addictions.

“No one who wasn’t there could understand how hard someone like Etta had to fight,” the late Ruth Brown said in 1998. Brown, Lavern Baker and Della Reese, along with James, were some of the early female artists who to this day remain downplayed in early rock ‘n’ roll history.

Ironically, it was a car commercial that ultimately helped secure James’s stature.

In the early 1990s, Jaguar licensed “At Last” in a lavish, memorable television ad that gave the song far wider popular exposure than it had after its original release in 1961. It was a No. 2 R&B hit then, but only reached No. 47 on the pop charts.

James was still performing in the 1990s, and the song’s resurgence enhanced her stature.

She came into the spotlight again in 2008 when a James-like character was featured in the 2008 movie “Cadillac Records.” The movie was loosely based on Chess Records, where James recorded in the 1960s, and it featured Beyonce, as the James character, singing “At Last.”

James said she enjoyed the movie, though it “had some inconsistencies” and largely ignored the success the real-life James had on records and on black radio before she came to Chess in 1960.

She praised Beyonce’s performance, though in early 2009 she complained that Beyonce, rather than James, was invited to sing “At Last” at Barack Obama’s inauguration.

She also said Beyonce “should get her a—whupped,” though she said later she meant that as a joke.

In April 2009, James sang “At Last” on “Dancing with the Stars.”

Born in Los Angeles, James did her early singing in the church before joining impresario Johnny Otis’s stable of Los Angeles R&B singers in the mid-1950s. She sang with Richard Berry, among others, and “The Wallflower” was an answer to the Midnighters’ hit “Work With Me Annie.”

She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Artis, and two sons.

Ronnie Hawkins - Voice Your Choice

Ronnie Hawkins was born January 10, 1935 in Huntsville, Arkansas. And since it is his birthday this week, it's perfect timing for him to be the first artist of 2012 on Voice Your Choice.

Ronnie formed a group called The Hawks in 1952 and moved to Toronto six years later in 1958. He's now been in Canada longer than he lived in his own country. He had a knack for discovering and nurturing great new talent. He assembled a group of musicians who later went on to call themselves The Band.

Robert Lee Dickey from James & Bobby Purify Has Died

Robert Lee Dickey, who performed with his cousin James as James & Bobby Purify, died Sunday (December 29) in Tallahassee, Florida. He was 72.

The Florida duo charted eight times from 1966 to 1968, most notably with "I'm Your Puppet" (#6-1966) and "Shake A Tail Feather" (#25-1967).

Robert was replaced for health reasons by Buddy Grubbs (for one record) and by Ben Moore (permanently) in 1971. Bobby went on to work as supervisor for the custodial crew at the Tallahassee Police Department and became a Deacon in his church.

The Belmonts' Fred Milano Has Died

NEW YORK (AP) — Fred Milano, who made rock and roll history on doo-wop hits with Dion and the Belmonts in the 1950s and continued to perform while starting a late-in-life career with the New York City Department of Correction, has died. He was 72.

Milano died Sunday, three weeks after his lung cancer was diagnosed, said Warren Gradus, who joined the Belmonts in 1963. Milano lived in Massapequa, on Long Island, and died in a hospital, Gradus said.

Dion DiMucci, the lead singer who left the Belmonts in 1960, said on his Facebook page Tuesday, "May he rest in peace and rock on in heaven."

Milano and three friends from the Bronx formed the Belmonts in the mid-1950s, borrowing their name from the borough's Belmont Avenue. They became Dion and the Belmonts after DiMucci joined in 1958.

Milano sang tenor on hits like "A Teenager in Love" and "Where or When."The Belmonts continued to perform and to record with different lineups after DiMucci left for a solo career. Gradus said Milano was performing with the Belmonts at casinos and other venues just weeks ago.

There was strife between DiMucci and Belmonts members, who were not pleased when DiMucci was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame without them in 1989. In his Facebook posting, DiMucci said Milano "was very savvy with harmonies" and added, "We had our ups and downs through the years but that's how things go in families, even rock-and-roll families."

Milano went back school in middle age and joined the Department of Correction in 2003. In his position as a legal coordinator at the Rikers Island jail complex, he helped inmates research their cases and taught a legal research class, said Karen Powell, director of law libraries for the department.

Powell said Milano had more energy than colleagues two decades younger and "was a person who really loved life."
"We'd know it was him coming through the door because we'd hear him singing and skipping up the stairs," Powell said.

Milano is survived by his wife, Lynn, two children and 10 grandchildren.

Brian Wilson To Re-unite With The Beach Boys For New Album And Tour

There are some good vibrations in the classic-rock world: Brian Wilson is finally reuniting with the remaining Beach Boys, it was announced Friday morning, December 15th.

After months of negotiations, Wilson rejoins two other founding members, Mike Love and Al Jardine, as well as Bruce Johnston and David Marks. Together, they will release a new album and stage an international tour in celebration of the band's 50th anniversary.

The stage-wary Wilson last toured with the group in 1965, though they continued to record together through the release of their landmark album "Pet Sounds" in 1966, and sessions for the aborted, experimental "Smile" album, meant to compete with the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."

The album was partially finished in 1967; its failure to be completed, and Love and Jardine's displeasure with the direction of the band, is widely regarded as the flash point for Wilson's descent into depression and drug use. It was officially released earlier this year -- though Wilson released his own version in 2004.

Relations between Wilson and band co-founders Love and Jardine have been contentious ever since. Wilson's two brothers, also founding members of the group, have both died: Dennis in 1983 from drowning and Carl in 1998 from cancer. Love is Wilson's cousin.

“This anniversary is special to me because I miss the boys and it will be a thrill for me to make a new record and be on stage with them again," Wilson said in a statement.

Wilson has performed Beach Boys material over the years as part of his solo sets, and Love, Jardine and Johnston have continued touring without Wilson as the Beach Boys.

The Beach Boys' 50-date tour kicks off in April with a headlining stint at Jazz Fest in New Orleans. Other dates and locations have yet to be announced.

The group has already recorded multiple songs for its new album, which is yet-untitled.

Singer Mike Love -- who has been with the band since it formed in 1961 -- said the group recently re-recorded one of its hits, "Do It Again," at Capitol Records' headquarters in Hollywood.

"Brian paid me a compliment saying, ‘How can a guy sound that great so many years later?’ " he said in a statement. "Later on, while working out some harmonies on a new song Brian had written, I got a chance to return the compliment."

Capitol/EMI plans to reissue catalog material in addition to the new album.

“It's no exaggeration to say that the Beach Boys are one of the greatest and most loved bands that the world has ever produced, and true American icons," EMI Group CEO Roger Faxon said of the group, which was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame in 1988.

Folk Singer Bob Burnett of The Highwaymen has Died

Bob Burnett, second tenor with the Highwaymen, died Wednesday (December 7) of brain cancer at his home in East Providence, Rhode Island. He was 71. Bob started the Highwaymen with Dave Fisher, Steve Trott, Chan Daniels and Steve Butts.

Originally calling themselves the Clansmen, they eventually changed their name due to its unsavory connotations. The new moniker came from the Alfred Noyes poem of that name. After honing their act for two years on campus, the quintet travelled to New York, where they quickly picked up a manager, producer and recording contract.

Their first single on United Artists Records was "Santiano," centering on the California Gold Rush, with the classic folk tune, "Michael (Row The Boat Ashore)" on the B-side. Released during the height of the "folk boom" in January of 1961, it should have sailed to the top of the charts. It did, but not without a struggle. It wasn't until a Worchester, Massachusetts DJ turned the record over that summer that "Michael" reached #1 for two weeks. By then UA no longer had the group under contract and had to pay to get them back.

"Michael" was followed early the next year by the double-sided hit, "Cotton Fields" (#13) and "The Gypsy Rover" (#42). The group steadfastly refused to leave school, performing only on weekends, which slowed their success.

"I'm On My Way" only reached #90 in 1962 and "The Bird Man" finished their chart run at #64 that year. Bob left the group to the Army Reserve, then moved on to Harvard Law School in 1967. Putting music behind, he had a long career in law and banking. A lawsuit filed by the original Highwaymen against the later Johnny Cash-Willie Nelson-Waylon Jennings-Kris Kristofferson incarnation was settled amicably when Dave's group opened a concert for the others and then granted them limited use of the name.

Singer Dobie Gray Has Died

Singer Dobie Gray, who had an enormous hit with 1973's "Drift Away," has died at age 71.
Gray's personal website confirms the news. No cause of death was listed.

According to Gray's site, he was born into a sharecropping family in Texas in 1940 and grew up surrounded by music. He later moved to Los Angeles and for a time worked with Sonny Bono, then A&R manager for Specialty Records. He also worked as an actor.

Gray's other songs included "Look at Me," "The 'In' Crowd," and "Loving Arms," but nothing hit as big as the wonderfully wistful "Drift Away," which sold over a million copies. It was actually first recorded by little-known John Henry Kurtz, but it was Gray's version that is most remembered. It's often played as a last song at concerts.

The song is almost best known not by its title, but by the repeated lyric, "Gimme the Beat, Boys," often misheard as "Gimme the Beach Boys." Gray's website even features a "Nancy" comic strip in which Sluggo sings the "Beach Boys" version of the lyric, then argues with Nancy about the actual words.

"Drift Away" has been covered by everyone from Elvis Presley to Ray Charles. The Rolling Stones reportedly recorded it, but never released their version, and rumors that the Beatles recorded the tune are false (they had already broken up by the time Gray recorded it). In 2003, Gray himself sang the final verse on Uncle Kracker's version of the song, which spent a record-setting 28 weeks atop the U.S. adult contemporary chart.

In many ways, Christmas is Bing Crosby. I'll never tire of watching Holiday Inn and how amazing it must have been to be seeing it for the first time in the movie theatre and then hearing White Christmas.

The Zombies - Song of the Week

The Zombies, Rod Argent (keyboards), Colin Blunstone (vocals), Paul Atkinson (guitar), Chris White (bass) and Hugh Grundy (drums), were from Hertfordshire, England. They soard up the charts in 1964 with their debut single, She's No There.

I've just finished reading an excellent book called Where have All The Pop Stars Gone? by Marti Smiley Childs and Jeff March. It's filled with authorized firsthand accounts of The Association, Herman's Hermits, The Kingston Trio, Chris Montez, The Spiral Starecase, Bobby Vee, and The Zombies. It's a fascinating read and I strongly suggest you get a copy for yourself. Check it out on Facebook.

All you need to do is listen to the entire four hour Music By Numbers Special. As you're listening, add up all of the numbers contained in the song titles you hear. At the end of the show, send the grand total of all songs played, along with your name and mailing address to contest@treasureislandoldies.com.

Songwriter Lee Pocklriss Has Died

Lee Pockriss, who wrote the music for midcentury pop hits like “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini,” “Catch a Falling Star” and “Johnny Angel,” died on Monday at his home in Bridgewater, Conn. He was 87.

Lee Pockriss also worked in musical theater for decades.

His death was confirmed by his nephew Adam Pockriss.

Perry Como made a hit of the gentle ballad “Catch a Falling Star” (“Put it in your pocket/Save it for a rainy day”), which Mr. Pockriss wrote with Paul Vance, in 1957. Shelley Fabares introduced Mr. Pockriss and Lynn Duddy’s wistful love song “Johnny Angel” (“I dream of him and me/And how it’s gonna be”) as her teenage character on the family sitcom “The Donna Reed Show” in 1962.

But in between, Mr. Pockriss struck a very different note in another collaboration with Mr. Vance: “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini,” a novelty number about a young woman “afraid to come out of the water” and be seen in the revealing swimsuit she was wearing. Her reluctance was understandable, because the navel-revealing bikini was still considered relatively shocking outside Hollywood and the French Riviera. In fact, the song has been credited with helping it gain acceptance.

Brian Hyland had a No. 1 hit with the song in 1960, and it was so inescapable as part of popular culture that a Hollywood film, Billy Wilder’s “One, Two, Three” (1961), affectionately lampooned it with a scene in which East German soldiers tortured a character (played by Horst Bucholz) by forcing him to listen to the song repeatedly.

Mr. Pockriss also worked in musical theater for decades. He wrote the music and Anne Croswell wrote the lyrics for the 1963 Broadway show “Tovarich,” for which Vivien Leigh won the Tony Award for best actress in a musical. The two also collaborated on “Ernest in Love,” a musical version of Oscar Wilde’s “Importance of Being Earnest,” first produced off Broadway in 1960 and revived by the Irish Repertory Company in 2009; “Conrack,” based on Pat Conroy’s book, which had an Off Broadway production in 1987; and “Bodo,” about a 12th-century goatherd, produced at the Promenade Theater in 1983.

With the lyricist Carolyn Leigh and Hugh Wheeler of “Sweeney Todd,” Mr. Pockriss created “Gatsby,” a musical based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel “The Great Gatsby,” in 1969. It was best known as an unproduced work, but this year it received two concert performances as part of the New York Musical Theater Festival. David Rooney, reviewing it in The New York Times, said that the songs succeeded in “evoking Fitzgerald’s characters, spreading a beguiling carpet of melancholy beneath all that jazz age revelry.”

“It made me curious,” he added, “to see a full production.”

Mr. Pockriss also wrote songs for “Sesame Street,” including “My Polliwog Ways,” sung by Kermit the Frog.

Lee Julian Pockriss was born on Jan. 20, 1924, in Brooklyn, the son of Joseph and Ethel Price Pockriss. He attended Erasmus Hall High School and Brooklyn College, and studied musicology at New York University. He served in the Army Air Forces during World War II as a cryptographer in the South Pacific.

He is survived by his wife, Sonja, and a brother, Harold.

Mr. Pockriss’s talent was recognized early. In 1950 The Times reported the presentation of an American Federation of Music Clubs award. The $100 first prize in composing went to a young graduate student, Lee Pockriss, of 325 Ocean Avenue, Brooklyn.

The Box Tops - Voice Your Choice

The Box Tops were from Memphis, Tennessee and included the great Alex Chilton, who was born in Memphis, on lead vocals. Gary Talley was the guitarist; John Evans played organ, with Bill Cunningham on bass, and Danny Smythe on drums. A change in personnel took place in late 1967 with both John Evans and Danny Smythe leaving the group. They were replaced by Rick Allen and Tom Boggs.

They had a short but stellar string of hit singles between 1967 and when they disbanded in 1970. Sadly Alex Chilton died on March 10, 2010 from a heart attack.

Bobby Bare was born April 7, 1935 in Ironton, Ohio. He had an interesting start to his career, when in 1958 this singer/songwriter/guitarist was drafted into the US Army. Before leaving, he recorded a demo and left a tape of The All American Boy with Fraternity Records. To his great surprise, Fraternity released the record and credited, in error, Bill Parsons as the artist. For many years, Bobby Bare would have to tell people it was really him singing on that Number 2 song in 1958.

His career really took off in the country music market, and he had 70 country hits on the charts. Meanwhile on the Top 100 charts, he scored 8 singles, with two Top Twenty hits. And it is those two two songs we feature this week on Voice Your Choice: Four Strong Winds and 500 Miles Away From Home.

Paul Leka Co-writer of Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye Has Died

Paul Leka, a songwriter and producer who worked with many recording stars but who was best known for writing the chanting chorus of “Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye),” a No. 1 hit in 1969 that was reborn in the 1970s as a sports arena anthem, died on Oct. 12 in a hospice near his home in Sharon, Conn. He was 68.
The cause was lung cancer, said his brother, George.
Mr. Leka made his name in the Tin Pan Alley tradition, writing or arranging songs for other people. He wrote and produced “Green Tambourine,” a No. 1 hit in 1967 for the psychedelic soft-rock band the Lemon Pipers; signed REO Speedwagon to its first record contract; and produced four of Harry Chapin’s albums, including 1974’s “Verities & Balderdash” containing the song that was Chapin’s lone No. 1 hit, “Cat’s in the Cradle.”
In 1969, Mr. Leka was helping a longtime friend from Bridgeport, Conn., Gary DeCarlo, fill the B-side of a single he was recording for Buddah. With Mr. Leka on keyboards, they started with a song they had written years before, a bluesy shuffle called “Kiss Him Goodbye.” But it filled only two minutes of playing time, and to make sure disc jockeys would not play it — instead of Mr. DeCarlo’s A-side — they decided to add a chorus to stretch it to four minutes, beyond the time limit of most radio formats.
“I started writing while I was sitting at the piano, going ‘na na na na, na na na na ...’ ” Mr. Leka told Fred Bronson, the author of “The Billboard Book of Number One Hits.” “Everything was ‘na-na’ when you didn’t have a lyric.” Mr. DeCarlo added the “hey hey.” They chanted the chorus at the beginning and end of the original song, and as an added poison pill left the dummy lyrics in.
The record company decided to release it nonetheless as the A-side of a 45 by Steam, a fictitious group name the two men invented for the record. The song reached No. 1 in late 1969 and enjoyed a happy radio life span. Then it came back.
     In 1977, the organist for the Chicago White Sox, Nancy Faust, began using the song to stoke the crowd into taunting the opposing team when visiting players struck out, say, or when their pitcher was removed. It is unclear how it spread, but within a few years the chant had become an anthem of sports conquest – not as nice as the communally-spirited “ “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” perhaps, but more ubiquitous, since fans were singing it at football and soccer games, too.
      It was not exactly the spirit of the original song, but close enough.
    “It’s a song where a guy wants a girl, but she’s going out with someone else,” Mr. DeCarlo said in a phone interview on Friday. “It’s basically a sad situation, but we made it upbeat. The guy sounds like he’s going to come out ahead. That’s why I think it caught on. It gives you a lift.”
Paul Theodore Leka was born on Feb. 20, 1943, in Bridgeport, one of four children of Theodore and Dhimitra Leka, immigrants from Albania. His father worked as a short-order cook. Soon after he started taking piano lessons, Paul was writing songs, and by age 16, his brother said, he was trying to sell them to music publishers in New York.
He worked for Mercury, Elektra and CBS Records and later opened his own recording studio in Bridgeport, where he helped produce songs for Gloria Gaynor, Stevie Wonder and Kris Kristofferson and others.
Besides his brother, his survivors include his wife, Engjellushe; their son, Alexander; two children from a previous marriage, Derek and Heather; and a sister, Evelyn Kreta.

In 2003, Radio88 FM became the very first FM radio station to carry Treasure Island Oldies,and we have been on the air every week for over 8 years now. I extend my mostsincere condolences to Ulf's family, friends, co-workers, and listeners. Wewill continue to be on Radio 88 FM every week.

I simply cannot thank you enough for theabsolutely amazing number of birthday wishes I received via phone calls, emailsand on Facebook. I apologize for not replying to each and every greeting, asthere were just too many. I had the honour to attend a majorfundraising dinner event, honouring my good friend Red Robison.The event was the 21st Annual Doormen'sDinner. This is an association of Greater Vancouver hotel doormen,who many years ago, decided to stage an annual fundraising event for charity.The CH.I.L.D. Foundation (CHildren withIntestinal and Liver Disorders Foundation), which raises funds for research andfinding a cure for children and young adults with Crohn's Disease, UlcerativeColitis, and liver disorders. It was wonderful to see so many long time friendsand colleagues pack the ballroom at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. Hisintroduction was done by Bruce Allen, talent manager extraordinaire for Michael Bublé, Bryan Adams,and other very significant and successful artists. During his acceptancespeech, Red thanks and acknowledged the hundreds of people in attendance andsaid that he would be here all night if he mentioned everyone's name. However,he wanted to say a big thank you to his wife Carole;together they will celebrate their 48th Anniversay together next spring. Hethanked Bruce Allen, his friend and working associate for over 25 years. Herecognized his brother Bill Robinson and Grace McCarthy,founder of the C.H.I.L.D. Foundation and former British Columbia politician who, at one time was the Deputy Premier forthe Province of British Columbia. Red also said he'dlike to recognize his long time friend Michael Godin. I was honoured to havebeen mentioned by Red. All in all, it was a great event, with a lot of money raisedthat night via both silent and live auctions for such a great cause. Havingbeen diagnosed with Crohn's myself a few years ago, I have an affinity to thischaritable organization. Congratulations to all the organizers!

The Foundations - Voice Your Choice

The Foundations were an Interracial R&B Pop group from England that was active between 1967 and 1970. The members were Clem Curtis (vocals), Allan Warner (guitar), Eric Allendale, Pat Burke and Michael Elliott (horns), Anthony Gomez (keyboards), Peter McBeth (bass) and Tim Harris (drums). Their debut single, Baby, Now That I`ve Found You, became a big hit for them in the UK, Canada and then the United States, where it peaked at Number 11.

Clem Curtis left the group in 1968 and was replaced by singer Colin Young, who sang lead vocal on Build Me Up Buttercup and In The Bad,Bad Old Days (Before You Loved Me).

Pianist Roger Williams Has Died

Roger Williams, the virtuoso pianist who topped the Billboard pop chart in the 1950s and played for nine U.S. presidents during a long career, died Saturday, October5 8, 2011. He was 87.

Mr. Williams died at his home in Los Angeles of complications from pancreatic cancer, according to his former publicist Rob Wilcox.
Known as an electrifying stage performer and an adept improviser, Mr. Williams effortlessly switched between musical styles.

Mr. Williams' 1955 hit "Autumn Leaves" was the only piano instrumental to reach No. 1 on the Billboard pop charts. It remains the best-selling piano record of all time, with more than 2 million sold.

Nicknamed the "pianist to the presidents," Mr. Williams played for every commander in chief from Harry Truman to George H.W. Bush. His last trip to the White House was in 2008, when he performed at a luncheon for then-first lady Laura Bush.

Mr. Williams was good friends with Jimmy Carter, with whom he shared a birthday. When the two men turned 80, Mr. Williams played a 12-hour marathon at the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum in Atlanta, with the former president in attendance.

Born Louis Wertz in Nebraska, he started playing piano at age 3. By age 9 he was prolific with several instruments and could play anything by ear.

As a teenager, he was given his own 15-minute radio show on KRNT, which was broadcast live from a Des Moines, Iowa, department store. Later he hosted a program on WHO, where he first met the station's young sports announcer, Ronald "Dutch" Reagan. The two men started a friendship that lasted over 60 years.

Mr. Williams moved to New York to study jazz at the Juilliard School of Music. He won performing contests on the popular radio shows "Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts" and Dennis James' "Chance of a Lifetime."

Soon after, Mr. Williams was signed to Kapp Records, where founder Dave Kapp was determined to find a hit for the young prodigy. Producers decided on a shortened arrangement of "Autumn Leaves," which Mr. Williams recalled first clocked in at three minutes and three seconds.

"In those days the disc jockeys would not play a record over three minutes long. So Kapp asked if I could play the thirds a little faster. I did, and it came in at two minutes and 59 seconds," Mr. Williams said, according to Wilcox.
It was an instant hit, and catapulted Mr. Williams to national renown. He followed it up with a string of hits including "Born Free," "The Impossible Dream," "Theme From Somewhere In Time," and "Lara's Theme from Dr. Zhivago."
Mr. Williams became a popular guest on the top television shows of the time including "The Ed Sullivan Show," "The Perry Como Show" and "The Steve Allen Show."

He is the first pianist to be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Steinway & Sons.

On his 75th birthday, Mr. Williams played a 12-hour marathon at Steinway Hall in New York City, a stunt he repeated several time in the following years.

In March, Mr. Williams announced on his website that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Mr. Williams is survived by his daughters, Laura Fisher and Alice Jung, and five grandchildren.

I'min the middle of reading a very interesting book that was recently to me, WhereHave All The Pop Stars Gone? Volume 1 by Marti Smiley Childs and Jeff March.The authors feature firsthand accounts of The Association, Herman's Hermits, TheKingston Trio, Chris Montez, The Spiral Staircase, Bobby Vee, and The Zombies.It is all current with several interviews haven taken place in early 2011. Imust say I have learned quite a few new tidbits about the members of TheAssociation; what happened to the members of Herman's Hermits. Andy Kim - Voice Your Choice

Andy Kim was born Androwis Jovakim December 5, 1952 in Montreal, Quebec. As a songwriter, Andy teamed up with Jeff Barry to co-write four out of the six hits for The Archies, including Sugar Sugar, a Number One song that remained at the top of the chart for one month and which also became a Gold record.

I first got to know Andy around 1970 when we were both still in Montreal and I was working at CFCF Radio, and we have remained friends ever since. He was a guest on my show a couple of years ago and we had a wonderful time reminiscing and I played his single, I Forgot To Mention, which he co-produced with Ed Robertson of the Barenaked Ladies.

It's a pleasure for me to have Andy Kim in the Voice Your Choice spotlight this week on Treasure Island Oldies. Cast your vote for the song you prefer: Be My Baby or Rock Me Gently.

The Association were a Los Angeles, California based band. In a time when many studio session musicians, such as the legendary Wrecking Crew, played all the instruments and only the singers actually participated in the recording session, The Association were the exception. They played their instruments on their recording sessions and sang all their own lead vocals and vocal harmonies.

This week the Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing The Association with a clip of their live performance on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. Along Comes Mary is preceded by a fairly long and humourous introduction by one of the band. It's our Song of the Week.

The Miracles Guitartist Marvin Tarplin Has Died

Marvin Tarplin, guitarist with Smokey Robinson and The Miracles and co-writer of such Motown tunes as "The Tracks Of My Tears," "Goin' To A Go-Go," "Ain't That Peculiar," "I'll Be Doggone" and "Being With You", died Thursday (September 29, 2011) in Las Vegas at the age of 70. The cause of death has not been revealed. Marv started out playing for the Primettes, who became the Supremes, but Smokey liked his sound and made him a member of the Miracles in 1958. He played with the group until 1973 but continued to play with the now-solo Smokey until 2008.

R&B's Sylvia Robinson Has Died At Age 76

Sylvia Robinson, singer, songwriter, pop music visionary and entrepreneur, died Thursday, September 29, 2011 of congestive heart failure. The longtime Englewood resident was 76 years old.

Although Robinson, who was born Sylvia Vanterpool in New York City, had hits of her own as a recording artist — including the infectious "Love is Strange," which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2004, and the seductive "Pillow Talk" — she’s best known as the producer of the Sugarhill Gang’s "Rapper’s Delight," the first hip-hop hit single.

It was Robinson who put together the Sugarhill Gang, and whose Sugar Hill Records, run with her husband Joe, released the landmark disc. "Rapper’s Delight," which was co-written by Sylvia Robinson, peaked at No. 34, but that chart position doesn’t begin to measure the record’s impact. It was a shot heard ’round the world — the beginning of a revolution that would transform popular music.

Making "Rapper’s Delight" was a gutsy thing for a businesswoman to do. There was little precedent for recorded rap music, and no way to know if the audience that attended hip-hop parties would be interested in buying a single. But a trip to the New York disco Harlem World gave her a glimpse of the future — and convinced her to put her money and muscle behind the new form.

"As I was sitting there, the deejay was playing music and talking over the music, and the kids were going crazy," Robinson told The Star-Ledger in 1997. "All of a sudden, something said to me, ‘Put something like that on a record, and it will be the biggest thing.’ I didn’t even know you called it rap."

Robinson signed three local Jersey emcees and quickly cut "Rapper’s Delight." The tone of the song — like most of the material that Sugar Hill would put out — was upbeat, playful, even giddy. Robinson’s rappers bragged, but did not threaten.

Robinson always insisted that a band played the riff (borrowed from Chic’s "Good Times") that underpinned the song, but it’s always been suspected that she used an instrumental for "Rapper’s Delight," and, in so doing, kick-started the movement toward sampling.

"She was really good on the artistic level," said the Sugarhill Gang’s Michael "Wonder Mike" Wright, "coming up with material and shaping lyrics and melodies into a song, not just a piece of music that’s five minutes long."

After the success of "Rapper’s Delight," the Robinsons built Sugar Hill Records into the premiere hip-hop imprint of the early ’80s. The roster included many of the budding movement’s biggest names: Funky Four Plus One, the Treacherous Three, the West Street Mob.

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five put out "The Message" — the first successful rap disc that foregrounded social problems — through Sugar Hill Records. Robinson co-produced the moody recording, which is now recognized as one of the most important in the history of hip-hop.

The success with Sugar Hill Records was the culmination of a long career in the entertainment industry — scouting for acts, searching for new sounds, and daring to set up her own studios and labels. First recording as Little Sylvia in the 1950s, she joined forces with Kentucky singer McHouston Baker, who taught her how to play the guitar. "Love is Strange," the biggest Mickey & Sylvia hit, topped the R&B charts in 1957.

The single shared many of the qualities of her Sugar Hill releases — it was immediate, sexy, raw, built around a catchy riff and vocal performances that radiated personality. The song would be re-recorded by Peaches & Herb, Buck Owens, and Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, and prominently sampled by rapper B.o.B.
With her husband Joe, whom she married in 1964, she founded All Platinum Records in Englewood in 1968. Five years later, she recorded and released the racy "Pillow Talk," another R&B No. 1, on their Vibration imprint.

Three Stars Plaza: Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper

Clear Lake, Iowa, near where Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper died in a 1959 plane crash, will dedicate Three Stars Plaza in their honor October 13. In addition, the city will dedicate Ritchie Valens Drive and J.P. Richardson Avenue, contiguous to the existing Buddy Holly Place. Together they will triangulate the Surf Ballroom, where the trio played their last concert. Buddy Holly Place will rededicated with updated signs.

Glen Campbell - Voice Your Choice

Glen Campbell was born April 22, 1936 in Delight, Arkansas. As a guitarist and member of the famous Wrecking Crew studio musicians, Glen Campbell recorded with The Champs (Tequila) in 1960, The Hondells (Little Honda) in 1964, The Beach Boys (Pet Sounds album) and Sagittarius (My World Fell Down) in 1967. He went on to host his own TV show, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour from 1968 to 1972.

He charted a whopping 75 times on the country music charts and 42 times on the Adult Contemporary charts. He also appeared on the pop charts 38 times between 1961 and 1981.

On August 30th, 2011 he released his final album, Ghost On The Canvas and is also performing in concert on his Goodbye Tour. He has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, and he is anxious to give his final performances while he is still able.

One of Motown`s greatest solo soul singers was Jimmy Ruffin. While he had several hits, one has become an all-time classic. What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted was a huge hit for Jimmy, and was also spectacularly performed by Joan Osborne in the outstanding documentary and performance movie, Standing In The Shadows Of Motown, about the Funk Brothers, the famous Motown studio musicians.

Ides of March Trumpet Player John Larson Has Died

John Larson, trumpet player with the Ides of March, died Wednesday (September 22, 2011) of complications from cancer in Warsaw, Indiana. He was 61. John joined the group in the late '60s and his playing can be heard on the brass-dominated tunes, such as "Vehicle". A memorial service is being planned for November.

Jumpin Jack Neal - Original Member of Gene Vincent's Blue Caps Has Died

"Jumpin'" Jack Neal, bass player with Gene Vincent's Blue Caps, died Wednesday (September 22) at his home in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He was 80.

Jack played bass for the house band for WCMS radio in Norfolk where he came to the attention of Gene. He joined Cliff Gallup, Willie Williams & Dickie Harrell in backing Gene on "Be Bop A Lula" in 1956 and stayed with him for 34 more songs before leaving late that year. Jack never saw Gene again. Jack returned to Norfolk, where he worked as a plumber and part-time musician.

Jimmy Ruffin was born May 7, 1939 in Collinsville, Mississippi. While signed to Motown Records, he had 8 appearances on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1966 and 1971.

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice presents his first two Motown singles: Gonna Give Her All The Love I've Got and What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted.

Tommy Roe was born May 9, 1942 in Atlanta, Georgia. He had his first Number One and his first Gold record when he was only 20 years old. Between 1962 and 1973, he appeared on the Billboard charts a total of 22 times, and had six Top Ten hits plus four Gold Records, a very impressive pop career.

The Dave Clark Five were from Tottenham, England and by 1961 their line-up had been finalized. In the group were Dave Clark on drums, Mike Smith, lead vocals and keyboards, Lenny Davidson on guitar, Dennis Payton on sax, and Rick Huxley on bass.

Sadly both Mike Smith and Dennis Payton have died, leaving behind a legacy of hits to be remembered forever.

Gary U.S. Bonds - Voice Your Choice

Gary U.S. Bonds was born Gary Anderson June 6, 1939 in Jacksonville, Florida, and raised in Norfolk, Virginia. He was signed to the independent label, Legrand Records, and charted seven singles between 1960 and 1962. Out of those seven, 5 were Top Ten hits, and one reached Gold status (Quarter To Three)!

He disappeared from the charts until 1981, when Bruce Springsteen took him under his wings, and along with Miami Steve Van Zandt (aka Little Steven), produced three singles, most notably This Little Girl, which peaked at #11 in 1981.

Nick Ashford - Legendary Motown Songwriter Has Died

Nick Ashford, one-half of the legendary Motown songwriting duo Ashford & Simpson, has died at age 70.

His longtime friend and former publicist Liz Rosenberg told The Associated Press that Ashford — who along with wife Valerie Simpson wrote some of Motown's biggest hits — died today in a New York City hospital. He had been suffering from throat cancer and had undergone radiation treatment.

Among the songs Ashford & Simpson penned are "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", "You're All I Need To Get By" and "Reach Out And Touch Somebody's Hand".

He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Herman's Hermits - Voice Your Choice

Herman's Hermits became of of the most successful of the British Invasion groups of the early-to-mid-1960s. While practically everyone knows Peter Noone, the lead singer and head of the band, not that many know who the rest of the members were. Time to rectify that situation. They were Derek Leckenby and Keith Hopwood on guitars, Karl Green on bass, and Barry Whitwam on drums. The name Herman's Hermits was derived from the cartoon character Sherman on the TV show The Bullwinkle Show.

Before Peter Noone left the group in 1972 for a solo career, Herman's Hermits racked up an impressive 19 charted hits, with 11 in the Top Ten plus 3 Gold Records.

Jerry Leiber of Legendary Songwriting Team of Leiber and Stoller Has Died

Jerry Leiber (pictured left), the lyricist who, with his partner, Mike Stoller (pictured right) , wrote some of the most enduring classics in the history of rock ’n’ roll, including “Hound Dog,” “Yakety Yak,” “Stand By Me” and “On Broadway,” died on Monday in Los Angeles. He was 78.

The cause was cardio-pulmonary failure, said Randy Poe, president of Leiber & Stoller Music Publishing.

The team of Leiber and Stoller was formed in 1950, when Mr. Leiber was still a student at Fairfax High in Los Angeles and Mr. Stoller, a fellow rhythm-and-blues fanatic, was a freshman at Los Angeles City College. With Mr. Leiber contributing catchy, street-savvy lyrics and Mr. Stoller, a pianist, composing infectious, bluesy tunes, they set about writing songs with black singers and groups in mind.

In 1952, they wrote “Hound Dog” for the blues singer Big Mama Thornton. The song became an enormous hit for Elvis Presley in 1956 and made Leiber and Stoller the hottest songwriting team in rock ’n’ roll. They later wrote “Jailhouse Rock,” “Loving You,” “Don’t,” “Treat Me Nice,” “King Creole” and other songs for Presley, despite their loathing for his interpretation of “Hound Dog.”

In the late 1950s, having relocated to New York and taken their place among the constellation of talents associated with the Brill Building, they emerged as perhaps the most potent songwriting team in the genre.
Their hits for the Drifters remain some of the most admired songs in the rock ’n’ roll canon, notably “On Broadway,” written with Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, and “Stand By Me” with Ben E. King. With Phil Spector, Mr. Leiber wrote the Drifters hit “Spanish Harlem.”

They wrote a series of hits for the Coasters, including “Charlie Brown,” “Young Blood” with Doc Pomus, “Searchin’,” “Poison Ivy” and “Yakety Yak.”

“Smokey Joe’s Cafe,” a 1954 hit written for the Robins, became the title of a Broadway musical based on the Leiber and Stoller songbook. In 1987, the partners were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

“Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller have written some of the most spirited and enduring rock ’n’ roll songs," the hall said in a statement when they were inducted. “Leiber and Stoller advanced rock ’n’ roll to new heights of wit and musical sophistication.”

Jerome Leiber was born on April 25, 1933, in Baltimore, where his parents, Jewish immigrants from Poland, ran a general store. When Jerry was 5, his father died and his mother tried, with little success, to run a small store in one of the city’s worst slums. When he was 12, she took him to Los Angeles.

It was while attending Fairfax High in Los Angeles and working in Norty’s Record Shop that he met Leonard Sill, a promoter for Modern Records, and confessed that he wanted to be a songwriter. After Sill urged him to find a pianist who could help him put his ideas onto sheet music he met Mr. Stoller through a friend, and the two began writing together.

“Often I would have a start, two or four lines,” Mr. Leiber told Robert Palmer, the author of “Baby, That Was Rock & Roll: The Legendary Leiber and Stoller” (1978). “Mike would sit at the piano and start to jam, just playing, fooling around, and I’d throw out a line. He’d accommodate the line — metrically, rhythmically.”

Within a few years they had written modestly successful songs for several rhythm-and-blues singers: “K.C. Lovin’ ” for Little Willie Littlefield, which under the title “Kansas City” became a No. 1 hit for Wilbert Harrison in 1959.
In 1952, Sill arranged for Mr. Leiber and Mr. Stoller to visit the bandleader Johnny Otis and to listen to several of the rhythm-and-blues acts who worked with him, including Big Mama Thornton, who sang “Ball and Chain” for them. Inspired, the partners went back to Mr. Stoller’s house and wrote “Hound Dog.”

“I yelled, he played,” Mr. Leiber told Josh Alan Friedman, the author of “Tell the Truth Until They Bleed: Coming Clean in the Dirty World of Blues and Rock ’n’ Roll” (2008). “The groove came together and we finished in 12 minutes flat. I work fast. We raced right back to lay the song on Big Mama.”

In 1953 they formed Spark Records, an independent label, with Sill, but without national distribution it failed to score major hits. Atlantic Records, which had bought the Leiber and Stoller song “Ruby Baby” and “Fools Fall in Love” for the Drifters, signed them to an unusual agreement that allowed them to produce for other labels. The golden age of Leiber and Stoller began.

Their seemingly endless list of hit songs from this period included “Love Potion No. 9” for the Clovers (later a hit for the Searchers). In the mid-1960s, Mr. Leiber and Mr. Stoller concentrated on production. They founded Red Bird Records, where they turned out hit records by girl groups like the Dixie Cups (“Chapel of Love”) and the Shangri-Las (“Leader of the Pack,” “Walking in the Sand”).

They sold the label in 1966 and worked as independent producers and writers. Peggy Lee, who had recorded their song “I’m a Woman” in 1963, recorded “Is that All There Is?” in 1969.

Mr. Leiber is survived by three sons, Jed, Oliver and Jake, and two grandchildren. With Mr. Stoller and David Ritz, Mr. Leiber wrote a 2009 memoir, “Hound Dog: The Leiber & Stoller Autobiography.”

Miss Toni Fisher - Voice Your Choice

There will be no Voice Your Choice next week during the Annual Instrumental Gems Wordless Wonders Special on Treasure Island Oldies, but the popular feature will return August 14th with Miss Toni Fisher.

She was from Los Angeles, California, where she was born in 1931. She died of a heart attack on February 19, 1999 at age 67. She had three songs on the Billboard chart between 1959 and 1962. Despite such a short career on the charts, two of her songs have made lasting impressions. Her first hit, The Big Hurt was the first hit record to feature "phasing", an electronic gimmick that bends and distorts the sound waves. Her third hit single, West Of the Wall was inspired by the Berlin Wall crisis in August of 1962.

Singer Gene McDaniels Has Died

Singer Gene McDaniels, who reached the top three in 1961 with "A Hundred Pounds of Clay" and later rose to No. 1 when he wrote Roberta Flack's "Feel Like Makin' Love," died Friday at his home in Maine. He was 76.

A soft-spoken man with a powerful voice, McDaniels scored eight other chart hits, including "Chip Chip," "Point of No Return" and "Tower of Strength," which featured one of the most memorable inhales in pop music history.
Born in Kansas City and raised in Omaha, McDaniels sang in the church choir and studied at the Omaha Conservatory.

He also loved the rhythm and blues he heard on the radio in the 1950s, he said later, and was a particular fan of Pookie Hudson, lead singer of the Spaniels.

But when he began his professional career in 1954 his primary style was jazz. He performed with among others, Cannonball Adderley, Les McCann, John Coltrane and Miles Davis.

His pop/rock recordings combined these influences, and "A Hundred Pounds of Clay" helped crystallize the transition between 1950s R&B and the soul music of the 1960s.

By the mid-1960s he had begun moving into producing and songwriting as well as performing. He ultimately worked for Capitol, Motown and A&M before, some years later, forming his own label.

Besides "Feel Like Making Love," which won a Grammy, he wrote a number of songs with socially conscious messages. Those included the jazz-flavored Les McCann/Eddie Harris hit "Compared to What?" and "Before You Accuse Me," which was recorded by Creedence Clearwater Revival and Eric Clapton.

While he eventually moved away from the show business spotlight, he continuing writing and recording until his death. He also worked with younger artists.

He is survived by his wife, Karen.

Dan Peek - Original Member of America Has Died

From Wikipedia: Dan Peek (pictured left) (born 1 November 1950, Panama City, Florida; died July 24, 2011) was a former member of the rock band, America from 1970 to 1977, together with Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell.

He contributed lead and backing vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards, and harmonica to their recordings during his tenure in the band. As a member of America, Peek contributed with four Top 100 singles: "Don't Cross The River" (#35), his most successful single "Lonely People" hit (#5), "Woman Tonight" (#44), and "Today's The Day" (#23). "Lonely People" and "Today's the Day" also hit number 1 on the Billboard AC charts.

Peek left America shortly after the February 1977 release of the Harbor album. He renewed his Christian faith after years of unhappy recreational drug use and a fast lifestyle, and had begun to seek a different artistic direction than Beckley or Bunnell. He went on to sign with Pat Boone's Lamb & Lion Records, and found success as a pioneering artist in the emerging Christian pop music genre. Outside of rejoining Beckley and Bunnell on stage on one spontaneous occasion several years after, Peek has not reunited with America, contrary to various inaccurate reports which have arisen over the years. Chris Christian co-wrote, produced, and contributed backing vocals on Peek's debut solo album, All Things Are Possible, in 1979, but that was in the context of Peek's solo career, and not as America. This was the first Contemporary Christian Hit to reach the Billboard charts and reached the Top 10 in the A/C Billboard chart. Gerry and Dewey sang on "Love Was Just Another Word" written by Steve Kipner and Chris Christian in LA which was the last time the three original members of "America" recorded together. He followed "All Things Are Possible" with "Doer of the Word". Doer of the Word was a Christian hit and Gerry Beckley sang background vocals on the record, but he did the recording at Chris Christian's studio in Dallas and Dan was not present.

Peek would later release an autobiography entitled An American Band, based on America's most successful period, and his own spiritual journey.Peek's first album and single became big hits on contemporary Christian music (CCM) radio stations and charts. The single "All Things Are Possible" not only hit number 1 on the CCM singles chart, it also crossed over to the Billboard singles and adult contemporary charts, becoming one of the earliest CCM's crossover hits.

Peek lost much of the momentum gained by the success of his initial hit by not releasing a second album for five years, 1984's Doer of the Word. While several of his songs would make the CCM charts, none crossed over to the Pop or Adult Contemporary charts. The delay really may have cost Peek in that regard with the title track, "Doer of the Word", which was an upbeat, very America like song that was backed by Beckley. It hit number 2 on the CCM charts. 1986 saw the release of his Electrovoice album, again to the CCM market, which included a remake of "Lonely People", featuring a very similar lead vocal treatment and overall arrangement that was done on the original America version years prior. He changed some of the song's lyrics to reflect his Christian faith, for example the lines "And ride that highway in the sky" and "You never know until you try" became "And give your heart to Jesus Christ."

Peek spent much of the 1990s in semi-retirement, occasionally recording music at his home in the Cayman Islands. He released several solo projects and collaborated with Ken Marvin and Brian Gentry as "Peace" on three albums. In recent years he has released music via his web page.

"The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades". You may think that after our very bright Technicolour Special! It was a lot of fun playing so many colourful songs on this week's show. If you did not get to hear the live show, it's available on the Archive page in Real Media and as part of our 24/7 Stream in Windows Media of the three most recent shows. And thanks for your requests. I always enjoy hearing from you.

Our next special is in two weeks, our Annual Instrumental Gems Wordless Wonders Special, live Sunday, August 7th. It's a rare opportunity to go back to a time when an instrumental song was not a rare event, but very common and frequent. We'll play some of the great instrumental hits of all time from the '50s, '60s, and '70s. I know you will want to listen to this show, as from listener feedback, this is one of the most anticipated and most enjoyed specials of the entire year.

I was saddened to hear of the death of Dan Peek, one of the three original members of America. They were a terrific group, with great vocals and fantastic production by the legendary George Martin. The wonderful thing about music is that once recorded, it is with us forever, like a great memory. Dan, thanks for so many great music memories.

Tommy James And The Shondells - Voice Your Choice

Tommy James was born Thomas Jackson in Dayton, Ohio and started his pop group The Shondells when he was only 12 years old. Their first single, Hanky Panky, was recorded for a small independent label, Snap, in 1963.By the way, the original version of Hanky Panky was recorded in 1963 by The Blossoms as the B side of the 45. Roulette Records purchased the original master recording by Tommy James And The Shondells from Snap Records and issued it on their own label. It took three years for the song to become a hit when it finally reached the top of the charts in 1966.

As the song was climbing the charts, Tommy James recruited the Pittsburgh group The Raconteurs to become the official Shondells. From 1966 to 1973, they hit the charts an incredible 31 times; during which time they enjoyed 7 Top Ten hits, including a Gold Record.

In case you did not get to listen to the Live show Sunday night, I began each hour with a Grass Roots song, in tribute to Rob Grill, the lead singer of the group who died last week. They sure had so many great records and so many hits. Glad to be able to play some of them for you on this week's show.

A couple more specials are coming your way. Get out your sunglasses. Next week it's our Technicolour Special, Sunday, July 24 and for the entire week on the Archive. All the songs with have a colour in the song title; it'll be vivid and full spectrum songs next week! Then the week of Sunday, August 7th, it's our annual Instrumental Gems Wordless Wonders Special.
