This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of September 24th, 2017

Week of September 25th, 2017 to September 30th, 2017

Thanks for listening to this week's show. We sure had lots of listeners from so many places, including all across the United States and Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, and Sweden. Very cool. I am so pleased how Treasure Island Oldies has become a real worldwide show! A big thanks to our Broadcast Partners Network affiliate radio stations for helping to make this happen. By the way, Jonathan Mosen from our affiliate station, Mushroom FM in Wellington, New Zealand, has just told me that there is a change to their schedule effective Monday, October 2nd. The current show will now be heard every Monday beginning at 5 pm Eastern time. As Jonathan indicated, it is a much better time for Mushroom FM's US listeners. I will be sure to have the Broadcast Partners Network page updated ASAP to reflect this new time. Thanks for letting everyone know, Jonathan.

It was my good pleasure to wish long time listener, Ed Sanderson in Toronto, Ontario, a very Happy Birthday on the show. If your birthday is coming up soon, I'd like to know so that I can help celebrate your special day by wishing you Happy Birthday on the show and also by playing Birthday by The Beatles for you. Send the info to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com

Jimmy Ruffin Voice Your Choice

One of Motown's greatest singers, Jimmy Ruffin, is in the spotlight this week for Voice Your Choice on Treasure Island Oldies.

Jimmy Ruffin was born May 7, 1939 in Collinsville, Mississippi. While signed to Motown Records, he had 8 appearances on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1966 and 1971.

Sadly, Jimmy Ruffin passed away in Las Vegas on November 17, 2014 at age 78. What a voice and what a talent.

Treasure Island Oldies presents Jimmy Ruffin in the Voice Your Choice spotlight. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either I've Passed This Way Before or What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

The Box Tops - Number One on Top Five Countdown Treasure Island Oldies

The Box Tops seemed to come out of nowhere when they hit with their debut single, The Letter. The amazing thing is the lead singer, Alex Chilton wrote and sang this when he was just 17 years old! What a great start to their career.

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, the Top Five Countdown is from 1967 and at the top of the chart coming in at Number One is The Box Tops with The Letter.

Enjoy!

Jimmy Dean Voice Your Choice

Jimmy Dean was born on August 10, 1928 in Plainview, Texas. While the family was poor, Jimmy showed that he was rich in talent. He performed as a member of the Tennessee Haymakers in Washington, D.C. in 1948; and then in 1952 he had his own outfit, the Texas Wildcats. Eventually he also had his own TV series on CBS in 1957 and 1958, then with ABC between 1963 and 1966.

During the period of the late '50s and into the '60s, Jimmy signed with Columbia Records and had success on the charts on thirteen occasions, including two Gold records.

Treasure Island Oldies presents Jimmy Dean on Voice Your Choice. Cast you vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either PT 109 or Little Black Book. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

Chubby Checker - Number One Top 5 Countdown on Treasure Island Oldies

In 1960, Chubby Checker recorded a cover version of a song written and originally done by Hank Ballard & The Midnighters. It was Chubby's version that took off. So much so in fact, it went all the way to Number One, first in 1960 and then again in 1962. No other record has achieved that feat.

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, the Top Five Countdown features the year 1960. And in at Number One is Chubby Checker with The Twist. Enjoy this clip from the TV show American Bandstand.

Enjoy!

This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of September 10th, 2017

Week of September 10th, 2017 to September 16th, 2017

I dedicated this week's show to all who have been affected by Hurricane Irma. I have many friends, from St. Maarten to Nassau, as well as in Southern Florida, both on the Atlantic and Gulf sides. One friend of mine drove for 12 hours in bumper to bumper traffic to leave the southern east coast of Florida for Georgia, where they are now getting a tropical storm version of Irma. I wish everyone safety and tons of courage as you start the re-building process. Be sure to listen to lots of the music you love; it will be a great tonic for your heart. And that's what I tried to do this week on the show; and what great music too. Thanks for your requests.

It's my pleasure to send out Happy Birthday greetings to Scott Harmon in Phoenix City, Alabama, and to Jools Clarke in Los Angeles, California. Jools and I have been friends for almost 40 years, as we worked together at A&M Records in the '70s and '80s. If your birthday is coming up soon, I'd like to know so that I can help celebrate your special day by wishing you Happy Birthday on the show and also by playing Birthday by The Beatles for you. Send the info to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com

American singer Jimmy Clanton was born September 2, 1938 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and he became known as the "swamp pop R&B teenage idol". Isn't that a mouthful! He recorded for Ace Records and reached the Billboard charts a total of seven times, including his signature hit, Just A Dream.

Jimmy Clanton starred in the movie Go Jimmy Go, produced by disc jockey Alan Freed, as well as Teenage Millionaire, with music produced and arranged by Dr. John. He even went on to become a DJ himself and worked at WHEX in Columbia, Pennslvania.

This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of September 3rd, 2017

Week of September 3rd, 2017 to September 9th, 2017

What a "busy" show this week. It started off as a 3-themed special: End Of Summer, Back To School, Labour Day. Then I got word that Skip Prokop, the co-founder and drummer of Lighthouse has died at age 74. On top of that, I was informed that Walter Becker, co-founder and bass player for Steely Dan, had passed away at age 67. I scrambled to adjust the playlist to include musical tributes to both Lighthouse and Steely Dan, all the while wanting to also have the focus on the special. Well, I am pleased to say it worked out very well. And thank you for the great comments, as well as your requests in advance of the show. As you know, I always like hearing from you, whether it be to request a song or to pass on some thoughts or comments. The email address to reach me is michael@treasureislandoldies.com. And be sure to join us for the next special, October 8th, the Canadian Thanksgiving Special. I'll harvest a cornucopia of songs appropriate for the occasion.

Once again, I'd like to thank my partner and webmaster, Eddy Fisher, for the great job of creating our wonderful "billboards" for our upcoming specials. The Mother's and Father's Day specials, along with the Summer Beach Party, Music of Canada and the Instrumental Gems Wordless Wonders billboards have all been outstanding!

If your birthday is coming up soon, I'd like to know so that I can help celebrate your special day by wishing you Happy Birthday on the show and also by playing Birthday by The Beatles for you. Send the info to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com

This week's Top Five Countdown is from 1962. And the Number One song is Sheila by Tommy Roe. It's playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog. Enjoy!

Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice spotlights Hot Chocolate. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either You Sexy Thing or Every 1's A Winner. I'll play the winning song on next week's show.

Hot Chocolate - Voice Your Choice

Hot Chocolate were a British soul band formed by Errol Brown and Tony Wilson in Brixton, England. They were produced by the legendary Mickie Most and also signed to his label RAK Records. They made a major impact on the charts in their native UK as well as in Canada and the United States. As an interesting aside, they had one song that was a hit in England but not North America. That song was You Could Have Been A Lady, which was a big hit in Canada and also in the USA for the Montreal-based group April Wine.

On Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice spotlights Hot Chocolate with two of their biggest hits for your votes. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either You Sexy Thing or Every 1's A Winner. I'll play the winning song on next week's show.

Tommy Roe Number One Top Five Countdown 1962

Tommy Roe had many hits over the years but this week he landed at the top of the charts. This week on Treasure Island Oldies, the Top Five Countdown is from 1962.

Coming in at Number One is Tommy Roe and Sheila.

Here's a clip of Tommy Roe performing Sheila.
