This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of May 26 2019

May 26th to June 1st, 2019

It was great to be together once again this week on The Island. And what a historic week it was. 50 years ago in 1969 John Lennon and Yoko Ono arrived in Montreal at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel for their Bed-In For Peace. I was 15 years old at the time and was the co-founder of our high school radio station, FMHC Radio. We had several DJs from local Top 40 station 1740 CFOX who did guest appearances, one of whom was Brit Roger Scott. When John and Yoko arrived in Montreal, Roger Scott was befriended by them. I tried to speak with John but the line to the room was always busy. Finally one evening, I got through and the phone was answered by Roger Scott. I said I was hoping to ask John a few questions for our high school radio station and reminded him he had been a recent guest. He replied to hang on. The next thing I heard was John Lennon saying "hello high school"! I was so pleased to play that interview with John during the first hour of this week's show. If you missed it or would like to hear it again, go to the Broadcast Partners Network. There is a program grid of days and times when it will air on one of our Affiliate Stations. Ahh what memories!

A program reminder for you. It's the Annual Father's Day Special, live Sunday, June 16. You'll hear lots of great songs relating to dads throughout the four hours. As usual, the show will get underway at 6 pm Pacific, 9 pm Eastern.

Happy Birthday wishes go out this week to Cora Quinn in Peoria, Illinois. If your birthday is coming up soon, I'd like to help you celebrate it on the show. Send the month and date to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the air and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

Voice Your Choice spotlights the British soul rocker Joe Cocker. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either The Letter or You Are So Beautiful. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

This week the Top Five Countdown is from 1963, this week's Spotlight Year. The Number One is the debut single by Lesley Gore. It's My Party playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

Have a good week.

Joe Cocker Voice Your Choice Trreasure Island Oldies

He was born John Robert Cocker on may 20, 1044 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. He satrted out in the typical British way in the late 1950s, with his own skiffle band, later becoming Vance Arnold and The Avengers. In the mid-60s he formed a new group, The Grease Band and was "launched" in the North American market as a result of his performance at Woodstock in 1969.

The following year he, along with Leon Russell, put together 43-piece revue they called Mad Dogs and Englishmen. The tour was successful, a live recording was made, a movie was filmed of the tour, and the rest is history. Joe Cocker became very popular. Interestingly, he seemed to always record songs that were either hits for others or written by others. For example, Billy Preston wrote You Are So Beautiful.

Treasure Island Oldies is pleased to present Joe Cocker on Voice Your Choice with two outstanding songs. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either The Letter or You Are So Beautiful.

I'll play the winner in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

Fats Domino - Voice Your Choice

Fats Domino was born Antoine Domino on February 26, 1928 in Jambalaya town, New Orleans, Louisiana. Starting out with the Dave Bartholomew Band in the mid-1940s, he signed with the famous Imperial Records in 1949, and his first recording, The Fat Man, reportedly was a million seller. He continued his association with Dave Bartholomew as the co-writer of the majority of his hits.

Even before he achieved his first pop hit, he had already collected a dozen Top Ten R&B hits. And did Fats Domino ever have hits! He charted no less than 66 times between 1955 and 1968. Now, get this. He had 11 Top Ten hits, 9 Gold Records, and yet surprisingly, not one Number One record! The closest he came to the top of the charts was in 1956 when Blueberry Hill remained at Number Two for 3 weeks.

His popularity continued even in the movies and he appeared in several including Shake, Rattle and Rock!, Jamboree!, The Big Beat and The Girl Can't Help It. Fats was recognized for all his achievements when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. The following year in 1987 he received The Grammy's Hall of Fame and Lifetime Achievement Awards.
Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice spotlights the amazing Fats Domino. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Blueberry Hill or I'm Walkin'. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

This week on the Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown, the year is 1965 and The Beatles are in at Numnber One with Ticket To Ride.

Tim Conway has died at the age of 85.

He passed away at 8:45 a.m. in the Los Angeles area on Tuesday, his rep Howard Bragman confirms to PEOPLE.

Prior to his death, he suffered complications from Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) and had no signs of dementia or Alzheimer’s.

Conway is survived by his wife of 35 years, his stepdaughter, his six biological children and two granddaughters. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family would like donations to be made to The Lou Ruvo Brain Center at the Cleveland Clinic in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The beloved actor is best known for his work on The Carol Burnett Show, winning viewers over with characters like the Oldest Man and Mr. Tudball, whose accent he has said was inspired by his Romanian mother. He was known to ad-lib his sketches — even surprising his scene partners — and won a Golden Globe Award for the series in 1976, along with Emmys in 1973, 1977 and 1978.

Tim Conway was also a big star on McHale's Navy. Here's Tim Conway in an episode from Season 1.

Everly Brothers - Voice Your Choice

Among the many popular recording artists of the 1950s and 1960s, the Everly Brothers, Don and Phil, rank pretty high up on the list. Don was born Isaac Donald on February 1, 1937 in Brownie, Kentucky. Phil was born January 19, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois. Both their parents were in show business as folk and country singers. Sadly, Phil Everly passed away January 3, 2014 from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; he was 74.

The Everlys first recorded for Columbia Records in 1955, but it wasn't until they signed with Archie Bleyer's Cadence Records in 1957 that their career took off. And what a way to take off; their debut record for Cadence, Bye Bye Love went to Number 2 on the charts and became a Gold Record.

Between 1957 and 1984, they hit the charts a total of 38 times, including 14 Top Ten, 4 Number 1 and four Gold Records. Phew!

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice is pleased to feature The Everly Brothers with two of their well loved hits. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either ('Till) I Kissed You or Cathy's Clown. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

The Legendary Doris Day Has Died At Age 97

Doris Day was one of the last remaining stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age and was sent off as such following her death on Monday.
.
The sunny actress and acclaimed singer died at age 97, not long after contracting pneumonia.
Though her career was full of box-office and chart-topping hits — namely her catchy tune “Que Será, Será (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)” from Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Man Who Knew Too Much” (1956) — the “Pillow Talk” star was also remembered for her work as an animal rights activist.

“She was a true star in more ways than one,” singer Paul McCartney wrote in a statement. “Visiting her in her Californian home was like going to an animal sanctuary where her many dogs were taken care of in splendid style. She had a heart of gold and was a very funny lady who I shared many laughs with.”

Likewise, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) also highlighted that work, her efforts to stop animal homelessness and the Doris Day Animal League’s partnership to oppose chemical tests on animals.

“Doris Day was a silver screen and singing legend, but PETA will always remember her for her most important role: animal champion,” PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange said in a statement. “Day was a warm, kind, generous person, and she will be missed by all of us here at PETA.”

22nd Anniversary Treasure Island Oldies Update

May 5th to 11th, 2019

I was so pleased to celebrate the 22nd Anniversary of Treasure Island Oldies with you! I am always amazed that I started the show on May 4, 1997 and that it has continued for 22 years, so far. I would like to salute the many listeners who have been there since the very early days of the show. I very much appreciate you listening for these many years. And to recent listeners, welcome and I am sure you will become a regular. I'd also like to say a big hello to the Chat Room regulars, the Nuts in the Hut. I'd like to thank Hugh Dobbie Jr. and his Yare Media team for providing the live stream every week. Stay tuned for new developments in the coming months.

The Guess Who - Voice Your Choice

The Guess Who formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba in the mid-'60s. The original group was named Chad Allen & The Expressions and consisted of Chad Allen (lead vocals and guitar), Randy Bachman (guitar), Bob Ashley (piano), Jim Kale (bass), and Garry Peterson (drums). From that line-up came one of the best rock and roll records ever to come out of Canada, Shakin' All Over, originally recorded by England's Johnny Kidd & The Pirates. But in my opinion, Chad Allen's riveting vocals and the entire band's electric performance completely outshone the original UK single. Two interesting notes about this record: 1 - this song was recorded in a TV studio, CKY in Winnipeg; and 2 - when released in the United States by Scepter Records in New York City, the label felt it had a real "British Invasion" sound and so decided to not reveal the name of the group, but simply printed "Guess Who" on the label. Well the name obviously stuck!

Burton Cummings joined the band in 1966, replacing Bob Ashley on piano. Shortly thereafter Chad Allen left, and Burton became the new lead singer. It took four years and a great record producer, Jack Richardson (who by the way also produced the Bob Seger classic Night Moves at Toronto's Nimbus 9 Studios), but the end result was their first Gold record, the chart smash These Eyes.

The hits kept on coming for the next five years until the end of 1974, including six Top Ten songs and three Gold Records.

Treasure Island Oldies is pleased to present The Guess Who next week in the Voice Your Choice spotlight. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Laughing or These Eyes. I'll play the winning song next week during the Mother's Day Special.

The Shirelles - Number One 1962 Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown

One of the early Girl Groups, The Shirelles, reached the top of the charts this week in 1962. This week on the 22nd Anniversary of Treasure Island Oldies, the Top Five Countdown is from this week's Spotlight Year, 1962.

Here are The Shirelles, featuring original lead singer Shirley Allston, in a live concert performance of Soldier Boy. It's the Number One song this week from 1962.

Enjoy!
