Island Update Treasure Island Oldies Week Of August 25, 2019

August 25th to  31st, 2019

Talk about a trip down memory lane! It sure was fun to revisit some of the Moments In Time that have aired on the show for going on 20 years. It was my pleasure to welcome Tom Locke to the studio and to reminisce together. We both really enjoyed playing back the 100th edition of the Sorrells Pickard Pick of the Week and hearing the conversation with Sorrells on the phone. Tom created the concept of a moment in time and it began as the Sorrells Pickard Pick of the Week. Sorrells was a successful recording artist, songwriter  and actor. Ringo Starr recorded four of Sorrells' songs for Beaucoups Of Blues, Ringo's post-Beatles solo recording debut. Unfortunately, soon after Sorrells' untimely passing, his company, Sorrells Pickard Gourmet Peanut Butter, which he started with long time friend and Hollywood film editor, Herb Dow, closed down forever. I have to tell you, it was the absolute best peanut butter I had ever tasted. Many Treasure Island Oldies listeners can attest to how delicious the product was, as many won gift pack prizes on the show. It was at that time Tom and I discussed our desire to continue the feature and thus, it became the Moment In Time. Many thanks Tom, for your incredible commitment of researching and writing the feature every week for 20 years!

Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, we celebrate the end of summer, the return to school and work with the Labour Day End Of Summer Back To School special. I'll play some great songs dealing with work and labour, the end of summer with the last of the great summer songs, and back to school songs. It's a great way to end the Summer season and prepare for Fall, and it's all on next week's show.

Is your birthday coming up soon? If it is, I'd like to help you celebrate it on the show. Send the month and date to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the air and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice spotlights The Coasters. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Poison Ivy or Young Blood. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

This week the Top Five Countdown is from 1967. Sitting at the top of the chart is a great story song and debut record for Bobbie Gentry. The Ode To Billie Joe is playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

Have a great week. Bye for now.

The Coasters Voice Your Choice Treasure Island Oldies

The Coasters began their career when they were called The Robins. Two future legendary songwriters, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, wrote and produced Smokey Joe's Cafe for The Robins, their debut record in 1955. The Coasters were formed October 12, 1955 when two members of the group moved from Los Angeles to New York City, the west coast to the east coast. And thus The Coasters were born. They scored a big R&B hit with their debut record for Atlantic Records, titled Down In Mexico.

What followed was a string of many hits that tended to have a fun storytelling approach to the lyrics, including Yakety Yak and Charlie Brown.

Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice spotlight The Coasters. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Poison Ivy or Young Blood. I'll play the winner on next week's show during the Labour Day End Of Summer Back To School Special.

The Ode To Billie Joe by Bobbie Gentry - Number One Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown 1967

Bobbie Gentry exploded onto the charts with her debut single, the very cinematic story of The Ode To Billie Joe. There was a ton of "water cooler" conversations as to whether it was a true story, what was thrown off that bridge and whatever happened to the characters in the song.

Whatever the real story was, it generated a lot of success for Bobbie Gentery and her debut single.

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, the Top Five Countdown is from 1967. And sitting at Number one is Bobbie Gentry and The Ode To Billie Joe.

Enjoy!

Treasure Island Oldies "Island Update" for the week of August 18, 2019

August 18th to  24th, 2019
It was great to be back from vacation and together again on The Island. This week on the show the Spotlight Year is 1960, an interesting year for music with some songs harkening back to the sound of the '50s, while others were heading more into the '60s pop sound. It's great that so many artists from the '50s were able to continue having a large fan following and many hits as well. Artists like Ray Charles, Jimmie Rodgers, Elvis Presley, Paul Anka and others continued on the charts with a lot of hits well into the 1960s. As always, the complete list of every song I played is available on the Listen page. Just scroll down to the Playlist.

Next week on Treasure Oldies marks the 20th year for the Moment In Time feature on the show. Tom Locke, who created the feature and both researches and writes every a new Moment In Time every week, will join me in the studio as we take a retrospective look at some of the most memorable Moment In Time stories. This is going to be a very interesting show.

Coming up in two weeks on September 1st, its the annual Labour Day End Of Summer Back To School Special. I'll play some work songs, a smattering of the last of the summer tunes and some school tunes too. It's a great way to end the Summer season and prepare for Fall.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Fay Greenwood and Matt Meaney from Langley, British Columbia, two very good friends and regular listeners of the show. The happy couple are able to celebrate their birthdays together, only several days apart. Is your birthday coming up soon? If it is, I'd like to help you celebrate it on the show. Send the month and date to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the air and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you.Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your

Choice spotlight Creedence Clearwater Revivial. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Down On The Corner or Fortunate Son. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

This week the Top Five Countdown is from 1960. Continuing his reign as the King Of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley has the Number One Song on the charts. It's Now Or Never is playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Voice Your Choice on Treasure Island Oldies

Creedence Clearwater Revival were from El Cerrito, California. With their early "swamp rock" songs such as Born On A Bayou, many mistook them for being from the Bayou itself. CCR first recorded as the Blue Velvets in 1959 on Orchestra Records, then in 1964 they called themselves the Golliwogs and recorded for Fantasy Records. In 1967 they re-named themselves Creedence Clearwater Revival, consisting of John Fogerty (vocals and guitar), his brother Tom Fogerty (guitar), Stu Cook (keyboards and bass) and Doug Clifford (drums). Sadly Tom Fogerty died at age 48 on September 6, 1990 of respiratory failure.

Between 1968 and 1976 CCR appeared on the Billboard charts 20 times, scoring an incredible 9 Top Ten hits, 5 Gold Records, and an additional 5 Platinum Records. The group disbanded in 1972, but that didn't prevent them from having their version of I Heard It Through The Grapevine on the chart four years later in 1976.

John Fogerty went on to a successful solo career, while in the past few years Stu Cook and Doug Clifford have gotten back together to form Creedence Clearwater Revisited.

On Voice Your Choice next week,Treasure Island Oldies is pleased to present Creedence Clearwater Revival. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Down On The Corner or Fortunate Son. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

Treasure Island Oldies Update - Week of August 4th, 2019

August 4th to  17th, 2019
Hum along with me; we're on our way to the charts! Not a lyric in sight on this week's show, as it's the annual Instrumental Gems Wordless Wonders Special. It was so much fun to put together a 4 hour playlist of strictly instrumental hits. There was a time when it was commonplace to hear instrumental hits on the radio. As an example, you remember the hit Raunchy. Well, there were three different versions that were simultaneously in the Top Ten. The recording by Billy Vaughn reached Number 10; Ernie Fields peaked at Number 4, while the version I played by Bill Justis was the most popular version reaching to Number 2. Talk about a popular song! I had a request from Toni Howerton in Middletown, Ohio, to play the full version of my theme song, Quiet Village by Martin Denny, a huge top five hit in 1959. It was also cool to play and listen to other great hits such as Bumble Boogie, Apache, Stranger On The Shore, The Lonely Bull, Classical Gas, and so many more. Interestingly, instrumental hits seemed to be a bit shorter than songs with vocals and it enabled me to play even more music for you. If you missed what many listeners call their favourite special of the year, be sure to go to the Broadcast Partners Network page for the days and times when you can listen to this week's show on our Affiliate Radio Stations.

I am taking a week off for vacation next week and there will be no live show. However, I am pleased to bring you a rebroadcast of the August 12th show from 2018.

Is your birthday coming up soon? If it is, I'd like to help you celebrate it on the show. Send the month and date to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the air and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

For next week's rebroadcast show, the Voice Your Choice artist is Bobby Vee. Be sure to listen for the interesting results. Voice Your Choice will be back on the August 18th show with The Doobie Brothers.

This week the Top Five Countdown is from 1963. The Number One song is by The Tymes, their debut single in fact.  So Much In Love is playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

Click here for this week's Rock and Roll News Podcast.

Be sure to listen for next week's rebroadcast show from August 12, 2018. I will be back with the next live show on August 18th.

Bye for now.
