Island Update Week of March 29th 2020 Treasure Island Oldies

March 29th to April 4th, 2020
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:
Treasure Island Oldies is LIVE with a one hour Monday to Friday daily show at 11 am Pacific, 1 pm Central, 2 pm Eastern, 3 pm Atlantic.

I am now finding myself extremely busy preparing both the weekly four hour show along with the new daily one hour show. I hope you are doing well staying at home as much as possible. Having a radio studio in my home is enabling me to continue bringing the show to you.

My deep appreciation goes out to the Broadcast Partners Network Affiliate Stations that carry my show weekly, and some of whom are now airing the daily show. A big shout out to these wonderful community radio stations: WTND-LP, Macomb, Illinois, QCCR-FM, Liverpool, Nova Scotia, Oldies 105.7, Thousand Oaks, California, and KDSX The Eagle, Ector, Texas. They are interrupting their regular program schedule to bring the daily show to their listeners. And the feedback has been very encouraging from listeners in various parts of the world. The announcement of the show going daily also generated media attention in two national trade publications, Broadcast Dialogue and FYI Music News. I'll keep this going as long as necessary. We're all in this situation together worldwide, and I'm pleased to provide a daily diversion for you.

The Chat Room has also seen a great increase of folks dropping by to say hi. In fact, we just experienced a record number of listeners in the chat room! Thank you. The Chat Room will remain available to you 24/7 should you wish to drop by to say hi and to share a few minutes together safely. I will be active in the chat room during the daily live show. Click the Chat tab to find out how to log in. There may be some folks when you drop in, other times there may be nobody in the room. It doesn't matter, just want to make it available to you at any time.

Happy Birthday wishes go out this week to my good friend Red Robinson in Vancouver, British Columbia. He's a broadcast legend and has been recognized by many organizations as a pioneer DJ, including the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. We shared offices for 13 years in Vancouver and firmly established a great professional relationship and personal friendship. Happy Birthday, Red. Also Happy birthday to Frank Vandeven in Mission, British Columbia and to Ineyda Velasquez in Dade City, Florida. If your birthday is coming up soon, I'd like to help you celebrate your birthday with all the show's listeners. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the air and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice features the amazing record artist, entertainer and piano player, Fats Domino. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either I Want To Walk You Home or It's You I Love. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

The Top Five Countdown is from 1965. Motown's The Supremes continued their string of hits with the week's Number One smash. Stop! In The Name Of Love is playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

Click here for this week's Rock and Roll News Podcast.

Hope you can get a chance to enjoy the daily one hour show this week.

Take care, stay safe and stay well!

Bye for now.

Fats Domino Voice Your Choice Treasure Island Oldies

Fats Domino was born Antoine Domino on February 26, 1928 in Jambalaya town, New Orleans, Louisiana. Starting out with the Dave Bartholomew Band in the mid-1940s, he signed with the famous Imperial Records in 1949, and his first recording, The Fat Man, reportedly was a million seller. He continued his association with Dave Bartholomew as the co-writer of the majority of his hits.

Even before he achieved his first pop hit, he had already collected a dozen Top Ten R&B hits. And did Fats Domino ever have hits! He charted no less than 66 times between 1955 and 1968. Now, get this. He had 11 Top Ten hits, 9 Gold Records, and yet surprisingly, not one Number One record! The closest he came to the top of the charts was in 1956 when Blueberry Hill remained at Number Two for 3 weeks.

His popularity continued even in the movies and he appeared in several including Shake, Rattle and Rock!, Jamboree!, The Big Beat and The Girl Can't Help It. Fats was recognized for all his achievements when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. The following year in 1987 he received The Grammy's Hall of Fame and Lifetime Achievement Awards.
Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice spotlights the amazing Fats Domino.

Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either I Want To Walk You Home or It's You I Love. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

Important Announcement

March 22nd to 29th, 2020

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:

Effective Wednesday, March 25 and continuing Monday to Friday, Treasure Island Oldies is going LIVE with a one hour daily show at 11 am Pacific, 1 pm Central, 2 pm Eastern, 3 pm Atlantic.

Many Broadcast Partners Network Affiliate Stations have already committed to simulcasting or delay broadcasting the daily one hour show. More are coming on board, for which I am grateful.

This can be a very lonely and fearful time for people who are isolating at home. With the constant "Breaking News", social media chatter, and binge watching Netflix, I want to provide a safe one hour escape by playing the music you grew up with and love hearing today.

Please note this this new daily live one hour show is in addition to and separate from the weekly four hour show, which will continue as usual.

In addition to the new daily live show, the Chat Room will be open 24/7 for anyone who wants to drop by to say hi and to share a few minutes together safely. I will be active in the chat room during the live show. Click the Chat tab to find out hot to log in. There may be some folks when you drop in, other times there may be nobody in the room. It doesn't matter, just want to make it available to you at any time.

PLEASE, pay attention to the health care professionals with their frequent updates. Listen to and follow their instructions. You'll note we have posted the above video on being safe at this time. My thanks to my friend and family member, James Fine at Telecine in Montreal for permitting me to share these tips with you.

Happy Birthday wishes go out this week to my good friend Tom Locke in Vancouver, British Columbia. Tom is also the creator of the long running Moment In Time weekly feature on the show for over 20 years. If your birthday is coming up soon, I'd like to help you celebrate your birthday with all the show's listeners. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the air and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice features "humble" R&B singer, The Fantastic Johnny C. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Boogaloo Down Broadway or Hitch It To The Horse. I'll play the winner on next week's show.
The Top Five Countdown is from 1964. The Beatles occupied the Number 3 and Number 2 spots as well as Number One. She Loves You is playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

Click here for this week's Rock and Roll News Podcast.

Before closing off for this week, I hope you will be able to listen to and enjoy the Daily Live show.

Take care, stay safe and stay well!
Bye for now.

The Fantastic Johnny C - Voice Your Choice Treasure Island Oldies

I always get a chuckle from the billing of R&B singer Johnny Corley as The Fantastic Johnny C. It sure drew attention to his name, that's for sure.

He was born April 28, 1943 in Greenwood, South Carolina. Prior to graduating from high school, he joined the armed services and later he was a heavy equipment operator. He joined a gospel group associated with the Macedonia Baptist Church. It was during one of the rehearsals that he was heard by a fellow church goer and nearby neighbour, the producer Jesse James.

Jesse James wrote what would become the Top Ten debut single for Johnny C, and it's one of the songs in the Voice Your Choice spotlight on Treasure Island Oldies.

Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Boogaloo Down Broadway or Hitch It To The Horse. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

The Beatles Number 3, 2 and 1 Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown 1964

The Fab Four not only have the Number One song on the charts this week, they also occupied the Number Two and Number Three positions as well!

Here are John, Paul, George and Ringo with She Loves You, this week's Number One song from 1964 on the Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown.

Enjoy!

This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of March 15, 2020

March 15th to 21st, 2020

Hi Sue, Billy, Leroy, Linda, Barbara, Freddie, Jimmy, and all of you. It was my pleasure to salute many of you on the show this week with the annual Name Game Special. It is so interesting just how many songs have been recorded with someone's name in the song title. There are so many songs in fact, that I would never have been able to play every name song. So for a complete list of the name songs I did play on the show this week, go to the Listen page and scroll down to the Playlist.

Before continuing on with this week's Island Update, I just wanted to make a comment on the current world health crisis. In my opinion, this is not about a one country virus, it is a worldwide virus and we are in uncertain times for the next while, however long that will be. I found that I was beginning to become consumed by a perceived need to be watching 24 hour news channels non-stop for the latest information. That can quickly become overwhelming. So for me, I am paying attention to the health care professionals to their concerns and warnings with their frequent scheduled updates. I also need to have a positive distraction. I am very grateful that Treasure Island Oldies is my "positive distraction". We can gather together in the safe virtual environment of the Chat Room and share in the good feelings of the music. I encourage you to join us during the next live show. Click the Chat button for more information on how to log into the chat room and spend some time with folks who love their music, which is also your music. Should the situation require extended self-isolation, please know that the show will continue. Depending on how things develop, I may feel it would be good to bring you this wonderful music more frequently than just once every week. I'll keep you up to date. In the meantime, please remember we are all one, together in this world. We need to take the necessary precautions to help rid us of this virus. Let's share in that optimism together and by staying safe and by keeping in touch with those we care about and love.

You'll note we have posted the above video on being safe at this time. My thanks to my friend and family member, James Fine at Telecine in Montreal for permitting me to share these tips with you.

Happy Birthday wishes go out this week to Joel Drucker in Randolph, New Jersey. Also I'd like to wish Rick Canode in Madison, Wisconsin Happy Birthday. Rick is a good friend, long time listener and he has been contributing the weekly Rare Rock and Roll Relic for 13 years now. All the best, Rick and Joel. If your birthday is coming up soon, I'd like to help you celebrate your birthday with all the show's listeners. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the air and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice features The Band. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Up On Cripple Creek or Life Is A Carnival. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

The Top Five Countdown is from 1968. The Number One song is by the late and very great Otis Redding. (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay is playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

Take care, stay safe and stay well!

The Band - Voice Your Choice Treasure Island Oldies

The Band, Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson, formed near Woodstock, New York. Levon Helm came to fame in the rootsy rock group that featured three extraordinary voices. But you could always tell which was his: It was the sound of the lusty wildcat, the stern Southern preacher, the depleted Confederate soldier, the dirt farmer at the end of his day.

Helm, 71, who as a drummer backed a pair of legendary musicians and then became a star himself with The Band and as a solo artist, died from throat cancer. As a young man out of Elaine, Ark., in the early 1960s, Helm hooked up with fellow Arkansan and rockabilly star Ronnie Hawkins (Who Do You Love?), moved to Toronto and recruited four Canadians to join the backing group: guitarist Robbie Robertson, bassist/vocalist Rick Danko, pianist/vocalist Richard Manuel and organist Garth Hudson.
Known as The Hawks, they toured with Hawkins, then split and eventually became Bob Dylan's backing band, just as the folk king was embracing electric rock. Though Helm left the group to work on an oil rig for two years, he rejoined his mates, and they and Dylan settled near West Saugerties, N.Y., in the latter half of the '60s. Countering the psychedelic trend that dominated the fractured music scene, they wrote and recorded songs steeped in old-time country, soul, R&B, '50s rock, gospel, blues and folk ballads — with lyrics that spoke of an older America.
Helm and the four Canadians got a recording contract of their own, and as The Band they released 10 studio albums from 1968 to 1998. In its heyday, the group appealed more to the rock intelligentsia than the masses, but on the strength of two highly influential albums, Music From Big Pink and The Band, and timeless songs such as The Weight, Up On Cripple Creek and The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (Helm sang lead and drummed on all three), they earned enshrinement in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and a lifetime achievement award at the Grammys in 2008.
Treasure Island Oldies is pleased to present The Band in the Voice Your Choice spotlight. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Up On Cripple Creek or Life Is A Carnival. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

Otis Redding - Number One Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown 1968

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, the Top Five Countdown spotlighted the year 1968. The song at the top of the charts was by an individual who never saw the success it achieved. Sadly Otis Redding died in a plane crash, along with four members of The Bar-Kays on December 10, 1967 in Lake Monona, in Madisom, Wisconsin. And posthumously it became the biggest hit of his career.

Here is Otis Redding with (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay, the Number One song this week.

Enjoy!

This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of March 8, 2020

March 8th to 14th, 2020

This weekend marked the annual Spring Forward of the clocks by one hour. All the songs I played on this week's show related to time, including The Night Time, Time Is On My Side, Rock Around The Clock, as a few examples. Don't wait a minute! Go to the Listen page and scroll down to the Playlist to find out every song I played on the show. It seems that here in British Columbia (the show comes to you from Vancouver), the BC Government received a loud and clear message from the population: don't change the clocks back by one hour any more. It is also the will of Washington, Oregon and California. All they are waiting for is final approval of the US federal government; but that seems to be not a current priority. I'll let you know if British Columbia passes the legislation. The Yukon has passed it into their laws and will no longer switch back. Interesting.

Be sure to listen to next week's show when we'll have the annual Name Game Special. You just may hear your name  in a song title. It's a fun special named after the fun song by Shirley Ellis.

If your birthday is coming up soon, I'd like to help you celebrate your birthday with all the show's listeners. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the air and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you. By the way, Happy Leap Year to all whose birthday falls this week on February 29th.

Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice features Don and Phil Everly, The Everly Brothers. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Walk Right Back or Lucille. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

The Top Five Countdown is from 1963. The Number One song is by The Four Seasons. Walk Like A Man is playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

Click here for this week's Rock and Roll News Podcast.

Take care and stay well.

Bye for now.

The Everly Brothers - Voice Your Choice Treasure Island Oldies

Among the many popular recording artists of the 1950s and 1960s, the Everly Brothers, Don and Phil, rank pretty high up on the list. Don was born Isaac Donald on February 1, 1937 in Brownie, Kentucky. Phil was born January 19, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois. Both their parents were in show business as folk and country singers. Sadly, Phil Everly passed away January 3, 2014 from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; he was 74.

The Everlys first recorded for Columbia Records in 1955, but it wasn't until they signed with Archie Bleyer's Cadence Records in 1957 that their career took off. And what a way to take off; their debut record for Cadence, Bye Bye Love went to Number 2 on the charts and became a Gold Record.

Between 1957 and 1984, they hit the charts a total of 38 times, including 14 Top Ten, 4 Number 1 and four Gold Records. Phew!

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice is pleased to feature The Everly Brothers with two of their well loved hits. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Walk Right Back or Lucille. I'll play the winning song on next week's Name Game Special.

The Four Seasons - Number One Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown 1963

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, the Top Five Countdown is from 1963. At the very top of the charts are those Jersey Boys, The Four Seasons.

Walk Like A Man is now playing.

Enjoy!

Island Update - Treasure Island Oldies Week of March 1st, 2020

March 1st to 7th, 2020

It's March! Spring and its new beginnings are just around the corner. And this week on the show we celebrated another new beginning, the decade of the '60s, with the Spotlight Year 1960. I played songs by some artists who straddled both the '60s and '60s, including Connie Francis, The Everly Brothers, Conway Twitty, Elvis Presley, Fats Domino, and many others. Many recording artists got their start at the beginning of the decade including Johnny Burnette, The Brothers Four, Etta James, and Jimmy Jones. Check out all the songs I played on this week's show by going to the Listen page and scrolling down to the Playlist.

Speaking of March, it was 13 years ago this month that long time listener, good friend and music collector, Rick Canode became a contributor to the show. Every week since 2007 Rick researches and comes up with Rick's Rare Rock & Roll Relic. He's entertained us with the results every week. Happy 13th Anniversary Rick and thanks very much. Here's to many more Relics!

We're just a couple of weeks away from our next special,  The Name Game, Live Sunday, March 15th. Listen and you just may hear your name  in a song title. It's a fun show named after the fun song by Shirley Ellis.

Happy Birthday wishes go out this week to Roy Geldart in Campbell River, British Columbia. If your birthday is coming up soon, I'd like to help you celebrate your birthday with all the show's listeners. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the air and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice features Badfinger, the first group signed to The Beatles' Apple Records. Originally called The Iveys, Badfinger had many songs that hit the charts. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Come And Get It or Day After Day. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

The Top Five Countdown is from 1960, our Spotlight Year on the show this week. The Number One song is by The King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. Stuck on You is playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

You know, some think podcasting is a "new phenomenon". I'm proud to say the Rock and Roll News Podcast has been happening every week since 2006 and it's consistently in the Top 5 Oldies Podcast downloads and listens around the world. Thanks to Podomatic. Check it out for yourself. Click here for this week's Rock and Roll News Podcast.

Take care and have a good week.

Bye for now.

Badfinger - Voice Your Choice Treasure Island Oldies

Badfinger were Peter Ham, Mike Gibbons, Tom Evans, and Joey Molland. They were the first group signed to The Beatles' Apple Records. Peter Asher, from Peter and Gordon fame, was the head of A&R for Apple Records and convinced all four Beatles to sign the group. Formed in 1961, they were originally called The Iveys, but changed their name after signing to the label. They chose the name Badfinger after the rough working title of The Beatles' With A Little Help From My Friends, Bad Finger Boogie.

With the dissolution of Apple Records, the group was left with legal, financial and managerial issues. Sadly it resulted in Peter Ham taking his own life in 1975. Unfortunately the remaining members of the group floundered so much that member Tom Evans also committed suicide in 1983.

However, on a much happier note, they sure left us with a host of great pop records and this week on Treasure Island Oldies presents two of them for your votes.

Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Come And Get It or Day After Day. I'll p[lay the winner on next week's show.

Elvis Presley Number One Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown 1960

Elvis Presley continued his reign as the King of Rock and Roll into the sixties, as evidenced by this week's Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown.

Sitting at the top of the charts in the Number One spot it's Stuck On You.

Here's Elvis in a live performance of Stuck On You on the Frank Sinatra Welcome Home, Elvis TV special from 1960.

Enjoy!
