This Week On Treasure Island Oldies

This week on Treasure Island Oldies
February 21st. 2010 to February 27th, 2010

Not only are the streets of downtown Vancouver packed with people celebrating the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, the Treasure Island Oldies Chat Room was packed too, and I was pleased to welcome JJ from Pickering, Ontario for his first time visit. The regular Nuts in the Hut were most welcoming and within a few minutes, JJ seemed like a long time friend in the chat room. He was recommended to listen to the show from various oldies music sites, including the prestigious Spectropop, and has been listening for about four weeks now. He commented on how great the music was, the quality of the signal and the rock solid stream he was enjoying. Thanks, JJ, good to have you as a new listener. It would great to have you check out the Chat Room too. During the live show Sunday nights, click Chat on the Menu on any page of the website and follow the instructions to log on. It is very easy to do and you'll find that the chat room adds a new dimension to your enjoyment of the show.

Thank for your comments about being able to hear the Top 5 Countdown at any time. I know you don't always have a huge amount of time to listen to the entire four hour show. By listening to the Top 5 Countdown, you can still enjoy a segment of the show featuring the biggest songs from this week in Rock and Roll history. Go to the  Listen page and scroll down to the Top 5 Countdown logo and click on the button.

And this week I am pleased to spotlight Smith, featuring Gayle McCormick with their big hit single, Baby It's You, the remake of the classic hit by The Shirelles. Enjoy this live performance; it's our Song of the Week.

Bobby Bare - Voice Your Choice

Bobby Bare was born April 7, 1935 in Ironton, Ohio. He had an interesting start to his career, when in 1958 this singer/songwriter/guitarist was drafted into the US Army. Before leaving, he recorded a demo and left a tape of The All American Boy with Fraternity Records. To his great surprise, Fraternity released the record and credited Bill Parsons as the artist, in error. For many years, Bobby Bare would have to tell people it was really him singing on that Number 2 song in 1958.

His career really took off in the country music market, and he had 70 country hits on the charts. Meanwhile on the Top 100 charts, he scored 8 singles, with two Top Twenty hits. And it is those two two songs we feature this week on Voice Your Choice: Detroit City and 500 Miles Away From Home.

Make you selection for the song you'd like to hear at the Voice Your Choice page. We'll play the winner in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

Smith with Gayle McCormick - Song of the Week

Smith was a pop rock group from Los Angeles, California. The group consisted of Rick Cliburn and Alan Parker on guitars, Larry Moss on keyboards, Jerry Carter on bass, and on drums, Robert Evans. The lead vocalist was the powerful singer  Gayle McCormick.

Their biggest hit single, the remake of The Shirelles' all-time classic, Baby It's You, is our Song of the Week. Here's Smith performing live on a TV network I don't even recall.

Enjoy!

Welcome to Vancouver

There is a lot of talk worldwide about Vancouver right now as a result of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games.

Check out these amazing videos to see for yourself what all the fuss is about.

Dancing In The Streets...In Vancouver

This is just amazing to see. I was in the downtown core at Robson Square yesterday and there were at least 100,000 people; a couple of streets away, there was at least that many on Granville Street. Even down at the Olympic Cauldron there were at least 5 to 10,000 people. I have never seen such spontaneous gathering, singing and flag waving in all my life! What a feeling...Vancouver...what a city!

Check out the atmosphere on Granville Street where this video was taken last Saturday, the 2nd day of the Olympics. If you think it is crowded, it's nothing that has been happening every day when more and more people are here celebrating together.
Enjoy!

This Week On Treasure Island Oldies

This week on Treasure Island Oldies
February 14th, 2010 to February 20th, 2010

What a week! The 2010 Olympic Winter Games are underway in Vancouver, and the city is abuzz. I have never seen this kind of energy here in Vancouver, and I was here during Expo '86. Even non-sports fans are caught up in the Olympic spirit and excitement. And the city literally erupted in joy when the first Gold medal on Canadian soil was won by Alexandre Bilodeau in the Freestyle Skiing - Men's Moguls. What a thrill for Alex, his family, and all of Canada.

I truly hope you have an opportunity to watch some of the coverage, wherever you live. You'll get a taste of Vancouver, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. And as people began their love affair with Vancouver and Whistler, we celebrated Valentine's Day on the show. Thank you very much for your phone calls, email requests and dedications. It was great to play all your requests.

I'm pleased to let you know that you can now hear the Top 5 Countdown at any time. Click Listen on the Menu and scroll down the page. There will be a new Top 5 Countdown available every week. A big thanks to our Webmaster, Eddy Fisher, for this great new addition to Treasure Island Oldies.

Happy Birthday wishes go out this week to Craig Smith of Keswick, Ontario, who celebrated his birthday with his friends in the Chat Room and all the Nuts in the Hut wished him well. If you have a birthday coming up, let me know by sending your name, city and birthday date to michael@treasureislandoldies.com We'll play Birthday by The Beatles, our official birthday song.

Lots of new friends connected these past few days on Facebook including my sister Louise Godin in Gatineau, Quebec, Charlene Smith-Gize, my nephew Tony's wife in Airdrie, Alberta, as well as James W. Foster, Michael Easton, Trevor Andres, Colin MacDonald, Robert Bartosh, Mark Fromson, George Robertson, Eric Alper, Marjorie Corbo, and singer Ron Dante, who sang Tracy by The Cuff Links and Sugar Sugar by The Archies. What a week! Follow me on Facebook, click the logo on any page of the website and get connected.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog has Three Dog Night in the spotlight. They were the Oldies Artist of the Week on the show and I thought it would be great to have them sing Celebrate, a great song at any time, but perfect for the Olympic celebration in Vancouver. Enjoy Three Dog Night live on TV from 1975 with our Song of the Week.

Del Shannon is the featured artist on Voice Your Choice with two of his rarely heard hit songs for your votes: Stranger In Town and Two Kinds Of Teardrops. Cast your vote for the song you'd like to hear. Click the Voice Your Choice Button on any page of the website and make your selection. We'll play the winning song in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

Del Shannon - Voice Your Choice

Del Shannon was born Charles Westover on December 30, 1934 in Coopersville, Michigan. Not only was he a talented hit maker as a recording artist, he was also a very good songwriter. One of his big hits that he wrote was I Go To Pieces, recorded by Peter & Gordon. He was also the very first artist to hit the US charts with a John Lennon and Paul McCartney song, From Me To You, which reached Numbner 77 in 1963.

In the short time span between 1961 and 1966, Del appeared on the Billboard charts sixteen times and had three Top Ten hits including the Number One and Gold Record, Runaway.

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice spotlights Del Shannon with two of his rarely heard hits: Stranger In Town and Two Kinds Of Teardrops. Cast your vote for the song you'd like to hear. Click Voice Your Choice and make your selection. We'll play the winner in Hour 3 of next week's show.

The Knack Lead Singer Doug Fieger Dead At 57

LOS ANGELES – The Knack lead singer Doug Fieger, who co-wrote the 1979 hit My Sharona, has died at age 57, the band said on its website on Sunday, February 14.
Fieger was living in Woodland Hills, Calif., and was being treated for cancer, The Detroit News reported.
"Our hearts are broken, we will miss you Doug," band members said on Knack.com.
The band built a large and influential following in the Los Angeles club scene of the late 1970s and recorded its debut album, Get The Knack, which included My Sharona, in 11 days for $17,000.
Capitol Records pulled out all the stops promoting the album and Rolling Stone magazine referred to the band as "the new Fab Four," a reference to the Beatles.
Billboard named My Sharona the No. 1 single of 1979. The song has been covered by numerous artists and returned to music charts in 1994 after it was included on the soundtrack for the hit movie Reality Bites.
Fieger co-wrote My Sharona with bandmate Berton Averre after being initially rebuffed by a teenage girl of the same name in 1978.
Fieger told People magazine in 1995 he had hoped she would be flattered by such lines as "I always get it up for the touch of the younger kind." She eventually dumped her boyfriend, joined Fieger on tour, graduated from high school and became a rock-star girlfriend for three years.
The woman, Sharona Alperin, has been selling real estate to entertainment industry clients in Los Angeles for over 20 years.

Dale Hawkins R.I.P.

Dale Hawkins, best known for his 1957 hit "Suzie Q" (also known as "Suzy-Q"),  died February 13th in Little Rock, Arkansas at the age of 73, of complications from colon cancer.
He had been undergoing treatment at the Arkansas Hospice Center at St. Vincent's Doctors Hospital in Little Rock.
Born August 23, 1936 in Goldmine, Louisiana, Hawkins was a singer, guitarist, and songwriter called "the archictect of 'Swamp Rock Boogie.'"
From his website: ""His swamp rock classic, 'Susie Q,' crackles with the manic energy of that restless time, and conjures instant images of steamy Southern nights. It features a 15-year-old James Burton on guitar, the first of many guitar wizards Dale would discover and nurture. Others included Scotty Moore, Joe Osborn, Roy Buchanan, Fred Carter, Jr., and Kenny Paulsen.

"Dale's early experiments in production in the studios of Shreveport's KWKH with Merle Kilgore and Johnny Horton developed the skills that would later produce hits for the Uniques, Five Americans, Jon & Robin & the In Crowd, Michael Nesmith, Harry Nilsson, and others. Along the way, he even found time to host "The Big Big Beat" aka "The Dale Hawkins Show" on WCAU-TV in Philadelphia."
"Suzie Q" was covered by among others, the Rolling Stones in 1964, and Creedence Clearwater Revival, who recorded an 11-minute quasi-psychedelic version on their first LP in 1968.
Among Hawkins' other hits were "La Do Da Da," later recorded by the Blue Things. He has been inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame and The Lousiana Music Hall of Fame.

This Week On Treasure Island Oldies

This week on Treasure Island Oldies
February 7th, 2010 to February 13th, 2010

I admit it, I have come down with Olympic Fever. Just a few days away from the Opening Ceremonies and I am now getting really excited. Driving home tonight I passed people standing on the sidewalk along my street waving their bright red Canadian flags. I discovered that the Olympic Torch Relay was going to be passing right in front of my home. What a thrill. You could feel the energy and excitement of the crowd, made up of all ages and cultures, and all proud to have the Olympic Torch pass through our neighbourhood. What a treat! I'm really looking forward to attending a complete dress rehearsal of the Opening Ceremonies and will also be going to one of the medals ceremonies to be followed by a concert by Burton Cummings. There is quite a buzz in and around Vancouver and I love it!

Thanks for the nice comments on the new feature, the Oldies Artists of the Week. It's nice to be able to play these mini artist profiles and then follow it up with one of their hit songs. Glad you enjoyed this week's artist, Neil Diamond and his not often heard hit song Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon.

I have been passing on all your great feedback on our new Chat Room to our Webmaster, Eddy Fisher. What also got him excited was the fact that it can be used by sight readers for the visually impaired. As there are many people who listen to the show that are visually impaired, this is good news that you can use the Chat Room without having to use IRC software. For complete instructions on joining the Nuts in the Hut, Click Chat on the Menu. Please follow the instructions carefully, then have some additional fun during the live show Sunday nights by being part of the Chat Room.

I also appreciated your kind words on our Annual Tribute to Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper. I am grateful to my friend Red Robinson from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for permitting me to use his interview clips he did back in1959 with Buddy Holly. And speaking of Red, he has donated to the Hall of Fame digital copies of his entire collection of interviews he has done with some of the biggest names in the music world since he was about 15 years old. As Terry Stewart, the President of the Hall of Fame, said "There are interviews here with artists that nobody else has. Period. End of story. For us to have access to them is just incredible". These precious interviews will now be protected and accessible for generations to come. Fantastic, Red!

Next week on the show is our Annual Valentine's Special with the added bonus that we will be live on February 14th, Valentine's Day itself. If you'd like to hear a song and perhaps have a dedication, let me know. Call or Click: 206-203-4678 is the number to call for our 24/7 Listener Line to record your voicemail message. Alternatively, Click the Requests button on any page of the website to send in your request via email. I look forward to hearing from you.

It's been another busy week on Facebook with more folks becoming friends including Latonia Ballagh, Bruce Barks Barker, and Diane Safir. It's a lot of fun connecting with so many new friends and I invite you to follow me on Facebook too. Click the Facebook logo on the website and let's connect.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog we get you in the mood for Valentine's Day with the great Sam Cooke and You Send Me. It's our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Voice Your Choice spotlights one of the greatest and longest lasting vocal groups of all time, The Dells. They've been performing together for over fifty years and are a very fitting group to have on next week's Annual Valentine's Special. We've got two of their many hit songs for your votes: O, O, I Love You and Always Together. Cast your vote by clicking the Voice Your Choice button on the website and making your selection for the song you'd like to hear. We'll play the winner in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Guylaine Coté in Quebec City, Quebec who celebrates her birthday this week. If you or someone special to you is having a birthday, let me know. Send the details to michael@treasureislandoldies.com. It'll be my pleasure to wish you Happy Birthday and play Birthday by The Beatles.

Remember to send in your photo for the Treasure Island Oldies Listener Gallery. Many folks have, and there's still room for yours. Send your picture, name and city to michael@treasureislandoldies.com. I look forward to receiving  it from you.

Is your high school, college or university Alma Mater planning a Reunion? Let me know and I'll be pleased to let the listeners know about it. Today with people scattered all around the globe, it is sometimes difficult to reach them. I'll do my best to help publicize and promote your Reunion. Send the details to michael@treasureislandoldies.com.

Have a good week.

The Dells - Voice Your Choice

The Dells first recorded as The El-Rays in 1953 for Checker Records in Chicago, later signing with Vee-Jay Records in 1955. The group consisted of Johnny Funches (lead vocal), Marvin Junior (baritone lead vocals), Verne Allison (tenor), Mickey McGill (baritone), and Chuch Barksdale (bass). The line-up remained unchanged into the 1980s, with the exception of Johnny Funches, who was replaced by Johnny Carter in 1960. Funches died January 23, 1998 at age 62, while his replacement Johnny Carter died August 21, 2009 at age 75.

These guys were hugely successful on both the R&B charts and the Hot 100 Pop charts, with 47 charted R&B hits, while they appeared on the Hot 100 charts a total of 24 times.

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, we spotlight The Dells with two of their amazing hits: O, O, I Love You and Always Together. Cast your vote for either of these great love songs; go to the Voice Your Choice page and choose the song you`d like to hear. I`ll play the winner on our Annual Valentine's Special next Sunday, February 14th on Treasure Island Oldies.

To get you in the mood for our Valentine's Day Special on Treasure Island Oldies next Sunday, February 14th, here is one of the greatest soul singers of all time, the late great Sam Cooke with You Send Me. This Week On Treasure Island Oldies

This week on Treasure Island Oldies
January 31st, 2010 to February 6th, 2010

Wow there are a lot of things I want to tell you about, so let's get started. To begin, I'd like to thank our Webmaster, Eddy Fisher, for the brand new alternative to mIRC to be able to connect with the Chat Room. He has been testing it, and several listeners were sent an email with access to the test page. By all accounts, it is a huge improvement over the former java chat applet, which stopped working in early January. It is NOT difficult to log into the Chat Room, but you must follow the instructions completely. For full details, click Chat on the Menu. Please note that the visually impaired are encouraged to use IRC software as it is easy for screen readers to assist with connecting and chatting. The Nuts are definitely back in the Hut!

I am pleased to have introduced a new weekly feature, the Oldies Artist of the Week in the first hour of the show. You'll hear a short artist profile followed by one of that artist's hit songs. My thanks to Russ Horton and IRSOA (Internet Radio Supports Oldies Artists) for providing the weekly artist profile spots.  I have been and continue to be an active supporter of oldies artists every week on the show since 1997.

Next week be sure to listen for our Annual Tribute to The Day The Music Died, February 3, 1959. We'll play the music of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper, and also air interview segments and news clips from that tragic event. It'll all happen in the 4th Hour of next week's show.

In two week's time it our Annual Valentine's Special and this year we will be live right on Valentine's Day, February 14th. The last and only time this has ever happened was back in 1999. Be sure to get your requests and dedications to me in plenty of time for inclusion on the show. Call or Click: 206-203-4678 - the number for the 24/7 Listener Line, or click Requests on any page of the website. I look forward to playing your songs and dedications.

I am pleased to pass on the encouraging news that Susan Jacks, formerly of The Poppy Family, is going to receive a kidney transplant from her brother, Billy, on February 17th. She has been battling kidney failure and on dialysis on a regular basis. I know you join me in wishing Susan all the very best.

Another singer is on the mend; this time it's Austin Roberts, who had several hits including Something's Wrong With Me. Austin suffered the beginnings of a heart attack and entered hospital for triple bypass surgery. He is recuperating at Baptist Hospital in Nashville and would welcome and appreciate receiving get well cards. You can send them to Baptist Hospital, 2000 Church Street, Nashville, TN 37236, Attention: George Robertson.

There is a brand new series of DVDs being released, with the first four coming out at the end of March. It's The British Invasion, featuring individual discs from Gerry and The Pacemakers, Small Faces, Herman's Hermits, and the amazing Dusty Springfield. Be sure to go to the Treasure Island Oldies Blog to see a trailer. Dusty looks and sounds amazing in this. Speaking of Dusty, she's being featured this week at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog with Son Of A Preacher Man, performed live. It's our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

I played Andy Kim's fantastic new song, Happen Again, once again on this week's show. Not surprisingly, the response was phenomenal. Reading the comments posted on Facebook and elsewhere, people are loving this song and being moved deeply by the lyrics. The song and the rest of his brand new album will be released March 31st and will be available both as a CD in your local music store, as well as available online. I can't wait!

Speaking of Andy, he is part of the impressive list of 2009 Inductees to the Hit Parade Hall of Fame. There's more details on the Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

Voice Your Choice next week has Bobby Vee being featured with two of his many hits: Charms and Rubber Ball. Cast your vote by clicking the Voice Your Choice button on any page of the website and then making your selection. The winner will be played in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

Bobby Vee - Voice your Choice

Bobby Vee was born Robert Velline on April 30, 1943 in Fargo, North Dakota. In 1959 Bobby, along with his brother and a friend, started a group called The Shadows, not the same group with Cliff Richard. After the sad and untimely death of Buddy Holly in the plane crash on February 3, 1959, the Shadows filled in on Buddy's next scheduled show in Fargo. After that, there was no looking back.

He first hit the charts in late August of 1959 with Suzie Baby, billed as Bobby Vee and The Shadows. What followed were thirty-seven additional charted singles, six Top Ten smashes, plus two Gold Records.

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice spotlights Bobby Vee with two of his well known hit songs: Charms and Rubber Ball. Which one is your favourite? Cast your vote by coming to the Voice Your Choice page. Make your selection, then standby for the results of the vote. We'll play the winning son in Hour 3 of next week's show.
