Michael

Space Coast Radio - Lands Legendary Weekly Radio Show
Space Coast Radio is pleased to announce the inclusion of the Treasure Island Oldies "The Home of Lost Treasures" with host Michael Godin into its weekly programming schedule.
In May 1997,  Treasure Island Oldies started its Internet broadcasting and has become one of the world's longest running weekly radio shows on the Internet. It initially began as a three-hour show, but as a result of listener feedback and demand, the show expanded to four hours in February 1998. It has become renowned for its ingenuity, originality and its ability to play very hard to find songs. The various themed specials throughout the year draw great response from listeners all over the world.
In late 1998, the program was picked up for broadcast on short wave via SWRS, the Short Wave Relay Service, based in Germany. The following year, it was voted the Number One program by listeners of SWRS. It has also been recognized by various online and print publications including ontheair.com, and the Yahoo Entertainment Guide; and is also linked from hundreds of websites around the world. In August of 2000 the show was profiled on the Voice of America radio program, Communications World. There was a feature article on the show in Macleans Magazine, Canada’s weekly newsmagazine. Vancouver’s Global Television News at Six spotlighted Michael Godin and Treasure Island Oldies in a lengthy segment of the newscast.
Michael Godin, Creator and Host of Treasure Island Oldies has been involved in music and broadcasting in Canada since 1969. When he was 16 years old, he had a high school radio station and even interviewed John Lennon during his Bed-In for Peace at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal. Michael was music director and disc jockey with CFQR, CFCF, CJFM – all in Montreal; and CFOM in Quebec City. His voiceover work includes being the voice for two Mattel Toys television commercials, the “He-Man Power Sword” and the “Skeletor Skull Staff”, which ran for two years in the United States. He joined A&M Records Canada in Toronto in the fall of 1975, as Director of Artist and Repertoire. Later he became Vice-President Artist & Repertoire. One of the highlights of his career at A&M and is the signing and development of mega star, Bryan Adams. Michael also worked with Lance Freed, President of Rondor Music International, the music publishing division of A&M Records and son of Rock & Roll pioneer Disc Jockey, Alan Freed.
Michael has served as the National Director of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS), the organization that presents the annual Juno Awards, Canada’s network televised music award show which recognizes excellence in recording achievement. He was also Chairman of the Board of the B.C. Chapter of CARAS, which for ten years staged the annual West Coast Music Awards. At the end of his tenure, he was presented with his own Juno Award for outstanding service to the Academy. In 1998, on behalf of CARAS, Michael hosted an Internet first, the live online video presentation of the Juno Awards Backstage and conducted interviews with many of the winners.
Treasure Island Oldies is steadily in the Top Ten most-listened-to oldies radio shows across the United States via satellite on MBN, the Mobile Broadcast Network. The relationship with MBN began April 2002. Today, you are just starting to hear about this breakthrough for cell phones: listening to music and radio. We have been on the cutting edge of this technology since its inception.
We are excited to have the Treasure Island Oldies weekly show included within the All Indianz Network of Radio Stations. Congratulations Jimmy Lawson/Owner - Space Coast Radio for bringing this deal to the table.

The Bells - Voice Your Choice

The Bells were a pop vocal group from Montreal, Quebec. The lead vocals were shared by Jacki Ralph and Cliff Edwards. For a period of time, their keyboard player was Frank Mills, who went solo and on to multi-platinum success with the instrumental hit Music Box Dancer. Meanwhile the rest of The Bells continued on nicely with several hits in both Canada and the United States.

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, as part of our Annual Music of Canada Special, we are pleased to present The Bells with Fly Little White Dove Fly and Stay Awhile. Which song would you like me to play? Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page. We'll play the winning song in the 3rd Hour of next week's show.

This Week On Treasure Island Oldies

This week on Treasure Island Oldies
June 27th, 2010 to July 3rd, 2010

Wow! What a great luau we had on our 14th Annual Summer Beach Party. We had the sun, the surf, the sand, and the greatest summer music anywhere. Oh and the food and beverages were delicious too! The fun continues all week long on the Archive. You don't want to miss this great summer special. Click Listen on the Menu and select this week's show, June 27th, for your Real Player. If you prefer Windows Media or using Winamp, you can listen the three most recent shows, including the 14th Annual Summer Beach Party on our Continuous 24/7 Feed. Speaking of Real Player, you may have recently remarked that there is a bit of distortion happening on both the live and archive. There is nothing I can do about it; I am afraid that our network is no longer supporting Real Media, and is focusing on Windows Media. At one time I was not a fan of Windows Media; over time though the codec that processes the sound has been dramatically improved. And I now love how the show sounds; full bass, and high end frequencies now  are cleanly and clearly reproduced, without sounding "tinny", as was the case in the past. If you've been listening in Real Media, I highly encourage you to check out our high bandwidth Windows Media feed. We just may be approaching the time when we cease to broadcast the show in Real Media. I will keep you informed of how things progress.

Next week I invite you to get out your maple syrup, poutine, and Canada Flag, as we wave in salute to the songwriters, artists and groups from coast to coast in Canada for our Annual Music of Canada Special. There are so many Canadian artists that made their mark across Canada and around the world throughout the '50s, '60s and '70s. And since then, even more major stars come from Canada including superstar Michael Bublé, Bryan Adams (who I am very proud to have signed to A&M Records when I was head of the A&R - Artist & Repertoire Department), Diana Krall, Sarah McLachlan, and so many others. Of course, we will focus on the early hit makers of the 50s, 60s and 70s next Sunday. Join me for four hours of great music.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Linda Guy in La Habra, California. All the best to you Linda, from all your friends at Treasure Island Oldies. Linda is also a regular Nut in the Hut, the Treasure Island Oldies Chat Room. If you have a birthday coming up soon, let me know by sending the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I'll be pleased to play our Official birthday song by The Beatles, Birthday.

By the way, you should join Linda and the other regulars in the Chat Room during the live show Sunday nights. Click Chat on the Menu for more details.

In case you didn't know, two more stations have joined the Treasure Island Oldies Broadcast Partners Network in recent weeks. I am pleased to welcome SpaceCoastIRadio.com located on Merritt Island, Florida. I will be posting an article to the Blog that was released by the publicist for the station. It's a flattering article and I am sure you'll be pleased to read it. A big hello goes out to Pennnine235Gold in Glasgow, Scotland. It's always a thrill when a new country enables us to reach a new audience. I hope the listeners of both stations enjoy our show.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing a fantastic summer song by England's First Class. Beach Baby, a favourite summer song of the Treasure Island Oldies Listeners, is our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

As I mentioned earlier, next week's show is our Annual Music of Canada Special, and Voice Your Choice is also spotlighting a group of musicians from Montreal. The Bells featuring Jacki  Ralph, sharing the lead vocal spotlight with Cliff Edwards. Two of their hit songs are up for your votes: Fly Little White Dove Fly and Stay Awhile. Cast your vote by clicking to the Voice Your Choice page and making your selection. We'll play the song with the greatest percentage of votes in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

This week on Treasure Island Oldies
June 20th, 2010 to June 26th, 2010

What a tremendous salute we had for the Dads all around the world on our Annual Father's Day Special. Thanks very much for your comments on this year's special I've received already. Always great to hear from you. It was nice to hear some very special songs that spanned 40 years, from the 50s to the 80s. I also enjoyed playing Sade's new song Baby Father for you. I hoped you enjoyed that great song from her new album Soldier Of Love. Every now and then I hear a new song by an artist that fits into our music, and I enjoy playing it. I really like giving you a taste of some good new music on the show; although for the most part, they tend to be heritage artists.

Be sure to join us for our next two consecutive specials on the show. Next Sunday, June 27th it's our 14th Annual Summer Beach Party. We'll be "live" on the beach of Treasure Island Oldies for four hours of sizzling summer hits for you to enjoy. Be sure to bring your bathing suit, towel and sunscreen. The rest is on us. Just watch out for the seagulls; and if you look up, close your mouth. LOL

The following week, Sunday, July 4th, it's our Annual Music of Canada Special. You'll be amazed with just how many hit artists, songwriters, performers and producers are from Canada and have made an impact across Canada, the United States, and all around the world. As always, if you have a favourite song by a Canadian artist or group, let me know. Call our 24/7 Listener Line at 206-203-4678 and record your request message. You can also Click the Requests button on any page of the website.

A big hello and welcome to all the listeners and staff at Pennine 235 Gold in Glasgow, Scotland. They are the latest station to join the Treasure Island Oldies Broadcast Partners Network. I'm pleased and proud to have our show air on stations in British Columbia and Ontario in Canada; Gothenberg, Sweden; London, England; Texas, Oregon, Washington State, New Jersey, Georgia, Massachusetts, Indiana, and Florida in the United States, and now Glasgow, Scotland. Thank you very much!

Glad to hear that Roy Geldart in Campbell River, British Columbia, a regular listener to the show as well as in the Chat Room, is on the mend after hip replacement surgery. I couldn't resist; I just had to play Hippy Hippy Shake by the Swinging Blue Jeans for Roy. Keep dancing Roy, it will be good therapy for your recovery.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing Paul Peterson, one of the stars on TV's Donna Reed Show, along with Shelley Fabares (Johnny Angel). In keeping with our Father's Day theme, our Song of the Week is My Dad by Paul Peterson. Enjoy this Father's Day song classic.

I mentioned earlier about our 14th Annual Summer Beach Party taking place on the show next week. Fittingly, Voice Your Choice spotlights The Beach Boys with two of their many summertime hits for your votes: Surfin' Safari and All Summer Long. Come to the Voice Your Choice page and cast your vote. We'll play the winning song in the 3rd hour of our Summer Beach Party Special next week.

Paul Peterson - Song of the Week

In keeping with your Father's Day Special theme this week, I am pleased to play one of the greatest Father's Day songs of all time, My Dad by Paul Peterson. He was a member of Disney's Mouseketeers, and as an early teen he played the role of Jeff Stone on TV's Donna Reed Show. He performed this song on the show, and it became a Top Ten hit in late 1963 and 1964. Here is Paul Peterson singing My Dad, our Song of the Week.
Enjoy!

This Week On Treasure Island Oldies

This week on Treasure Island Oldies
June 13th, 2010 to June 19th, 2010

I would like to begin this week's update by sending out my heartfelt congratulations to Rich in Hillside, Illinois. He and Kitten Connie were married this past week; and when he called into the Listener Line, he made the big announcement on the show. What a surprise it was for me and everyone listening, including the Chat Room regulars, the Nuts in the Hut. Rich has been a long time listener and friend and to hear this exciting news is just so great. He will be moving to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to live with his bride. Once again, congratulations and all the very best to Rich and Connie!

It was great to hear from Jacqueline in Ohio who emailed her requests to me. It was my pleasure to play Elton John and Kiki Dee with Don't Go Breaking My Heart and Dream A Little Dream Of Me by Mama Cass Elliot. I welcome your requests too. Call the 24/7 Listener Line at 206-203-4678 and record your message or Click the Requests button on any page of the website to get in touch with me via email. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

I'd also like to say hi to some folks who are not feeling all the great at the moment. My best wishes for a full and speedy recovery go out to Roy in Campbell River, British Columbia, who is undergoing a hip transplant this week. Shirley in Cincinnati, Ohio is recovering from eye surgery, while Fred, Craig, Sunny, Matt and our own webmaster, Eddy Fisher, are all not operating at 100%. Hope you all feel much better soon.

Be sure to join us next week for the first of three consecutive specials, our Annual Fathers Day Special and in two weeks it's our 14th Annual Summer Beach Party. The following week, Sunday, July 4th it's our Annual Music of Canada Special. I am really looking forward to these specials.

Thanks for the very nice feedback on our two new features, the Music Link and the Memory Test. This week's Music Link was The Flying Saucer by Buchanan and Goodman and The Martian Hop by The Ran-Dels. Of course, the Music Link was Flying Saucer and Martian. And the Memory Test was by Denny Reed from East St. Louis, Illinois with his 1959 song, A Teenager Feels It Too. You can find out the artist name and song title for every song played on the show every week. Just go to the Listen page and scroll down to the Playlist.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog has been given a facelift after over 800 postings, and I'm pleased with the new layout and design. I hope you enjoy it. And this week we're playing a song that was originally recorded in 1964 by Ian & Sylvia from Canada, and covered in 1965 by We Five. You Were On My Mind is our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Voice Your Choice features the big band sound of Chicago with two of their softer hit songs: Just You And Me and Colour My World. Cast your vote for the song you'd like to hear at the Voice Your Choice page. We'll play the winner in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

Chicago - Voice Your Choice

They started out as the Big Thing, but when they moved to Los Angeles, California in 1969, they changed their name to Chicago Transit Authority. Later that year, they paired it down to Chicago. Their sound was jazz-oriented rock with a full horn section. And boy did they have many hit albums and 45s!

Between 1969 and 1997 they appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 chart a total of 50 times and scored an astounding 19 Top Ten hits, 4 Gold and 1 Platinum record.

This week on Treasure Island Oldies Voice Your Choice features Chicago with two of their many hit songs for your votes: Just You And Me and Colour My World.

To cast your vote, come to the Voice Your Choice page and make your selection. We'll play the winner in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

We Five - Song of the Week

We Five were from San Francisco, California, and they recorded a cover version of a song originally done by Canada's Ian & Sylvia in 1964, which turned into an all-time classic and the signature tune for We Five. Here they are with You Were On My Mind, our Song of the Week.

Enjoy!

Jimmy Dean Has Died At Age 81

Goodbye, Jimmy Dean.
The country star turned sausage king has passed away at the age of 81, his wife said Sunday night.
"He was amazing," Donna Meade Dean said of her late husband. "He had a lot of talents."
Dean passed away in his home in Virginia on Sunday evening, The Associated Press reports. He had been sitting down to eat dinner in front of the television when his wife went into the other room. When she returned, he was unresponsive and was later pronounced dead.
Born in 1928, Dean was raised in poverty in Plainview, Texas, and dropped out of high school after the ninth grade. He became an entertainer after getting out of the Air Force, and gained fame during the 1950s as a singer.
He hosted CBS' "The Morning Show" and in the early 1960s had belted out several hit country tunes, such as "Big Bad John" and "PT-109," a song which honored President John F. Kennedy's service in World War II.
On television, Dean rose to fame with "The Jimmy Dean Show," a variety series on ABC.
In 1969, he created the Jimmy Dean Meat Co., and his sausages eventually became a million-dollar business and a household name. He sold the company to Sara Lee in 1984.
Dean lived in semi-retirement with his wife, who is a songwriter and recording artist, on their 200-acre estate just outside Richmond, where he enjoyed investing, boating and watching the sun set over the James River.

Anita Humes Lead Singer Of The Essex Has Died

Anita Humes, lead singer of the Essex, died May 30 at the age of 69. Born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1940, Anita was a Marine, entertaining at the non-commissioned officer's club at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, when she met four other leathernecks (Rodney Taylor, Walter Vickers, Billie Hill and Rudolph Johnson) and joined their group, which eventually was named after Essex County, New Jersey. They asked another Marine to write an original uptempo song for an audition with Roulette Records. William Linton worke in the communications department and he and his co-writer wrote "Easier Said Than Done" to the beat of the camp's teletype machine. It was placed on the b-side of "Are You Going My Way" in 1963. As happened so often back then, DJs turned the record over and sent "Easier Said Than Done" to #1 for two weeks that July. Being Marines made it difficult to support their recordings with concerts. Rudolph was shipped overseas before the sound-alike follow-up, "A Walkin' Miracle," reached #12 later that year. And when "She's Got Everything" topped at #56 that Fall and "Curfew Lover" (credited to "Anita Humes and the Essex) didn't even chart, the handwriting was on the wall. Anita left the Marines and did some solo recordings, but her lack of success caused her to join the Army, where she sang with the Army Showmobile. The group reunited for a PBS special in 2004.

Crispian St. Peters - "The Pied Piper" -Has Died At Age 71

Crispian St. Peters, who took "The Pied Piper" to #4 in 1966, died Tuesday (June 8) after a series of debilitating illnesses that left him in a wheelchair. He was 71 and still lived in the Swanley, Kent, England home where he was born Robin Peter Smith in 1939. Crispian played guitar and sang in a number of local bands, while working as a librarian, movie projectionist and potato picker, among other jobs. He made his first recording with Peter and the Wolves in 1964. The following year he went solo and signed with England's Decca Records. While his first two singles did not chart, his third, "You Were On My Mind" (already a U.S. hit for the We Five), reached #2 in the U.K. (it was released on Jamie Records in the U.S., but failed to chart until its re-release in 1967 when it made #36). His next single was the career-defining "Pied Piper," which topped out on the British charts at #5 in the Spring of 1966. The follow-up, "Changes," failed to make the top 40 in either country, however and other than "You Were On My Mind," his only chart appearances in either country were two songs that "bubbled-under" in America-- "Your Ever Changin' Mind" and "Look Into My Teardrops." The blame might be placed on his PR, which portrayed him as arrogant and cocky. He claimed to have written 80 songs that were better than the Beatles', said he was more exciting than Tom Jones and would make Elvis Presley "look like the Statue of Liberty." He kept on recording and performing until his health forced his retirement in 2001 (his last public performance had been two years earlier). He had suffered a stroke in 1995 that left him partially paralyzed in his right arm, caught pneumonia in 2003 and admitted to three nervous breakdowns-- the first in 1970 after being dropped by Decca. He also suffered from emphysema.

Marvin Isley of The Isley brothers Has Died At Age 56

Associated Press/AP Online

By KAREN HAWKINS

CHICAGO - Marvin Isley, the bass player who helped give R&B powerhouse the Isley Brothers their distinctive sound, has died at a Chicago hospital. He was 56.

Isley died Sunday morning, June 6th, at an inpatient hospice at Weiss Memorial Hospital, according to hospital spokeswoman Catherine Gianaro. She could not confirm a cause of death.

Isley stopped performing in 1996 after suffering complications from diabetes that included a stroke, high blood pressure, the loss of both legs and use of his left hand.

He joined his brothers' band in 1973. By that time, the Isley Brothers had established themselves with hits like 1959's"Shout," which sold more than 1 million records. Isley splintered off to form Isley-Jasper-Isley in the
1980s and returned to the Isley Brothers in the 1990s. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, and their career has spanned six decades. At one point there were five Isley brothers in the group, including Marvin. Today, only Ronald Isley is touring full time after a three-year stint in federal prison for tax evasion.

The group's hits included "Twist and Shout," later recorded by The Beatles, "Love The One You're With," and the Grammy-winning 1969 smash, "It's Your Thing." In a 2001 interview, Marvin Isley told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution he regretted spending decades ignoring his diabetes.

"If I would have listened, if I would have understood diabetes like I understood music, maybe these things wouldn't have happened," Isley said at the time.

In 2000, he settled a lawsuit against his older siblings stemming from a dispute over money from the estate of his deceased older brother, O'Kelly Isley, and from a $7 million plagiarism award against Michael Bolton relating to the group's 1966 song "Love Is A Wonderful Thing."

Funeral arrangements were not immediately available.

Bob Seger - Voice Your Choice

The pride of Detroit, Michigan is in the spotlight this week on Voice Your Choice. Bob Seger was born May 6, 1945 in Dearborn and raised in Detroit. I first became aware of him when hewas billed as Bob Seger & The Last Heard. They recorded for Cameo Records and had the classic Heavy Music, Part One in 1966. A couple of years later and a label switch to Capitol Records resulted in the Bob Seger System and the 1968 rock smash Ramblin' Gamblin' Man. In 1976 he formed his backup group of musicians, The Silver Bullet Band and they had many hits, including 7 Top Ten records.

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice presents Bob Seger with two of his anthem hits: Ramblin' Gamblin' Man and Night Moves. This'll be a hard call but you must decide which song you want me to play. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page. We'll play the winning song in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

Nancy Sinatra - Song of the Week

What a classic picture this is of Nancy Sinatra! and what a classic hit of hers we're playing here at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog. Here she is in a clip from a TV special with her lip syncing Sugar Town. It's our Song of the Week.
