This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of May 29th, 2016

May 29th to June 4th, 2016

For my American friends and listeners, I hope you enjoyed a long Memorial Day weekend. And thanks for spending some of your time listening to the show. Much appreciated. As you know, I always enjoy hearing from you. I received a nice note from Wendy McDougall in Australia in response to this week's Rock and Roll News. I mentioned that Ringo Starr missed some of The Beatles concert tour of Australia due to tonsillitis. She said that it brought back lots of memories for her as she attended the Adelaide concert where Jimmy Nicol sat in for Ringo. She was heartbroken, because Ringo was her favourite Beatle. But she did get to witness Jimmy Nicol in his short time in the spotlight. Thanks, Wendy. If you'd like to share a memory with me, please get in touch with be by sending your note to michael@treasureislandoldies.com.

Speaking of the Rock & Roll News, when you listen back to the Podcast you'll note I made a blatant error with the date of the first item. I said it was in 1966 that Buddy Holly saw the John Wayne movie, The Searchers", when if fact, it was 1956! My thinks to the Nuts in the Hut, the Chat Room regulars who were quick to point out the error.

If you'd like to send in a request, you can record your voicemail request and message by calling the Listener Line. Call 641-715-3900 and when connected be sure to enter the extension 716181 followed by the # (pound) symbol. I look forward to hearing from you as well and to playing your request.

My Generation Posters and More have a great 50% Off Sale on the featured poster, "Motown". It's got great images of many Motown stars.  Please check out their website for more information. And be sure to sign up for their weekly newsletter. You'll be among the first to know about the upcoming weekly specials. And be sure to also let them know you heard their commercial on Treasure Island Oldies.

My best wishes for a Happy Birthday go out to Daryl Darnell in Jacksonville, Illinois and to Bruce Toews in Winnipeg, Manitoba. If your birthday is coming up soon, please be sure to let me know so that I can celebrate your special day on the show. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I’ll wish you Happy Birthday during the show and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

Be sure to join us for our next special, which will air live Sunday, June 19th. It's our Annual Father's Day Special. Every song throughout the four hours will be dedicated to Dad. Always a special occasion to honour our dads. Hope you'll listen from 6 to 10 PM Pacific.

The Platters - Voice Your Choice

The Platters were an R&B group formed in Los Angeles, California. The original lineup consisted of the amazing voice of Tony Williams on lead vocals, David Lynch (tenor), Paul Robi (baritone), Herb Reed (bass), and Zola Taylor. They initially recorded for Federal Records, but really only met with success once they moved over to Mercury Records.

As the #1 vocal group of the 1950s, they had 70 songs hit the Billboard charts between 1955 and 1967, including 7 Top Ten hits and 5 Gold Records. With so many songs, it was difficult to select just two of them for this week's Voice Your Choice, but I did.

Treasure Island Oldies presents The Platters, with just two of their very many hit records. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either I'm Sorry or Twilight Time. I'll play the winner during next week's show.

Johnny Horton - Battle Of New Orleans - Song of the Week

The Number One song on this week's Top Five Countdown on Treasure Island Oldies is by Johnny Horton. Here he is in a clip from the Ed Sullivan Show performing The Battle Of New Orleans.

It's our Number One Song of the Week.

Enjoy!

my-radio_(christmas-1962)I always enjoy hearing from you, whether it's a request or to share some news or thoughts. I was very pleased to hear from Mary Lee in Floresville, Texas. Their destination was often northern British Columbia and the Yukon and she would pass the time listening to her "Japanese transistor radio". And she even sent a photo of that radio which she said still works to this day. What a great memory to share. Thanks very much Mary Lee. I'd love to have you share your memories with me too. It was another fun four hours on the Island this week. So many great tunes and a ton of memories. That's what I love about bringing the show to you every week. I play YOUR music, play YOUR requests and bring back YOUR memories. I have learned that music plays an important role in our mental health and well being. Think about it. When you hear a song you haven't heard in some time, it all comes back to you, including a lot of the lyrics. Music keeps our minds active. So be sure to join me again next week for another reactivation. :-)

I'm pleased to let you know that we have a new Listener Line phone service provider, so you can once again call and record your request and message. This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of May 8th, 2016

May 8th to May 14th, 2016

Happy Mother's Day to our dear mothers around the world. Whether present or in our hearts, we love and acknowledge mothers around the world every year. It's actually wonderful just how many songs relate to mother, some in jest and others with love and admiration. It's my pleasure to bring your our Mother's Day Special once again this year. Be sure to check out for yourself how many "Mother" songs I played. Go to the Listen page and scroll down to the playlist.

If you have been trying to call our Listener Line but not getting through, I have to let you know that without any prior notice or warning to its clients, the phone line provider ceased offering the phone line service as of May 1st. I was frustrated and annoyed that I was not able to have an immediate replacement number ready and working. Please be patient, I will get a new phone number for you to call with your requests and greetings as soon as possible. In the meantime, please be sure to email your requests to me at requests@treasureislandoildies.com.

I'd like to extend my best wishes and congratulations to Caroline Congdon in Fargo, North Dakota and to Bruce Toews in Winnipeg, Manitoba who are getting married next weekend. Bruce has been a regular in the Chat Room for many years and Caroline more recently. Some of their time getting to know each other has been during the live weekly Treasure Island Oldies shows. And now they're getting married. Congratulations you two!

Bill Haley and His Comets - Voice Your Choice

It could be argued that Bill Haley And His Comets were the group that launched Rock & Roll Music in a big way. When (We're Gonna) Rock Around The Clock was first released in May 1954, it went practically nowhere. When it was included as part of the movie starring Glenn Ford, the song took off reaching #1 on the charts, remaining in the top position for 8 weeks, that's 2 months, and attaining GOLD status!

Their first charted hit, Shake, Rattle And Roll, a former #1 R&B hit for Big Joe Turner, reached #7 and was a GOLD record.

Throughout their career, Bill Haley And His Comets had 28 hits on the charts, had 3 GOLD records and four reached the Top Ten.

Voice Your Choice Treasure Island Oldies presents Bill Haley And His Comets. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Burn That Candle or Skinny Minny. I'll play the winning song on next week's show.

The Mamas and Papas - Monday, Monday - Song of the Week

This week on the Treasure Island Oldies Top 5 Countdown the year was 1966. And the Number One song this week was by The Mamas and Papas. This became such a classic, but this week in 1966 it was just the most popular current record going around. Here's Monday, Monday. It's the Treasure Island Oldies Blog Song of the Week.

Enjoy!
