This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of February 26th, 2017

Week of February 26th, 2017 to March 4th, 2017

Well there were no winner announcement mistakes on this show! (unlike some other show that was on TV LOL) We had a clear winner with Sam Cooke's You Send Me on Voice Your Choice this week. And while Sam Cooke had lots of hits, in two weeks I will showcase a lot of artists who only ever had ONE hit on the charts. Join me Sunday, March 12th for the annual One Hit Wonders Special.

Despite having the awards show on TV, the Chat Room was jumping with lots of regulars and some returning friends who have been away for a while. It's a fun place to share conversation and the thing everyone has in common is everyone is listening and enjoying the music together. Try it out for yourself next Sunday. All you need to do is go to the Chat page and follow the simple instructions. We all look forward to welcoming you.

I'd like to send our Happy Birthday wishes to Linda Russell Johnson in West Plains, Missouri. And if your birthday coming up soon, please let me know the date so that I can help celebrate your special day on the show. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com and I'll wish you Happy Birthday and play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

The Top Five Countdown this week is from 1970 and the Number One song is the classic Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel. It's playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog. Enjoy!

Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice presents the British rock group, The Sweet. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Little Willy or Ballroom Blitz.

Here's this week's Rock and Roll News Podcast.

Have a good week. See you next Sunday on the Island for the next Live show.

Take care and all the best.

Bye for now.

The Sweet - Voice Your Choice

The Sweet were a rock and roll band from England. You might even describe them as one of the Glam Rock bands of the early '70s. Brian Connolly was the lead singer, who passed away at the young age of 52 of liver cancer in 1997. The other members were Andy Scott on guitar and keyboards, Steve Priest on bass, and Mick Tucker on Drums. Sadly, Tucker also passed away, in 2002 at age 53 of leukemia.

In the seven short years of their career as a group, they appeared on the charts 9 times and scored 2 Gold Records while they reached the Top Ten 5 times. Pretty impressive!

Treasure Island Oldies presents The Sweet on Voice Your Choice. Cast your vote for either Little Willy or Ballroom Blitz at the Voice Your Choice page. I'll play the winning song on next week's show.

Simon and Garfunkel - Number One Song of the Week: 1970

The Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown this week is from 1970. At the top of the chart was a song that had everyone singing. It's Simon and Garfunkel with the Number One Song, Bridge Over Troubled Water. The video is from their Concert in Central Park.

Enjoy!

If you've never tried dropping by, I can assure you that everyone is very welcoming and will make you feel right at home with lively conversation and a common interest in the love of the music I play on the show. Try it out for yourself next Sunday. All you need to do is go to the Chat page and follow the simple instructions. We all look forward to welcoming you.

Sam Cooke - Voice Your Choice

Sam Cooke, the legendary soul singer, was born January 22, 1931 in Clarksdale, Mississippi and raised in Chicago, Illinois. As the son of a Baptist minister, he sang in church choirs from age six. For six years he was the lead singer of the gospel group, The Soul Stirrers, from 1950 to 1956.

He began his secular singing career and landed a record deal with Specialty Records, but broke through when he recorded a song for Keen Records, written by his brother, Charles "L.C." Cooke, You Send Me. Eventually he ended up with RCA Victor Records and continued to have a highly successful career until his untimely death at age 33 when he was shot to death by a female motel manager on December 11, 1964. He was acknowledged with a Lifetime Achievement Award during the 1999 Grammy Awards.

Welcome to this week's Island Update. I hope you enjoyed our annual Valentine's Day Special and thanks for your requests; they always add an extra special element to the show. The Chat Room was busy as well and it was good to see the regulars along with listeners who drop by to say hello from time to time. Speaking of regulars, a big shout out to Linda Guy in La Habra, California, who is now back home recuperating from knee replacement surgery. Take it slow and easy, Linda, and follow the instructions from your doctor. Our webmaster, Eddy Fisher, has had both knees replaced and advises to remember to do all the rehab exercises to help ensure a complete recovery. All the best to you, Linda!

Sonny Geraci - The Outsiders and Climax Has Died

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Sonny Geraci, the Cleveland-born pop singer who scored national hits as lead singer of The Outsiders in the 1960s and Climax in the 1970s, has died, according to multiple media reports. He was 69, and had been in ill health since suffering a brain aneurysm in 2012.

Geraci, a graduate of John Adams High School, became lead singer of The Starfires in 1964. The band, founded by guitarist and songwriter Tom King soon changed its name to The Outsiders and put four singles on the U.S. pop charts during the late 1960s, including "Time Won't Let Me," "Girl in Love," "Help Me Girl" and "Respectable (What Kind of Girl Is This)," a remake of the Isley Brothers tune.

Geraci left the band in 1970, striking out on his own and eventually forming the band Climax with Walter Nims, who had been a member of both the Starfires and The Outsiders. That group later scored a Top 3 single with "Precious and Few," written by Nims. Climax disbanded in 1975.

Geraci left the music business in the early 1980s, but tried a comeback, under the pseudonym Peter Emmett, in 1983, releasing an unsuccessful album on MCA. Later, he played the oldies circuit, performed for a time with the Grass Roots and toured from 2007-2012 as Sonny Geraci and the Outsiders.

This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of February 5th 2017

Week of February 5th, 2017 to February 11th, 2017

Three young rock and rollers lost their lives in a plane crash this week in 1959. And in  the 4th hour of this week's show it was our tribute to Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper with the Annual Tribute: The Day The Music Died. It is always so fascinating to hear a young Buddy Holly being interviewed and jarring to hear the news bulletins announcing the plane crash to listeners. Overall however, it is always great to hear their music and the musical tributes that were generated by their passing. Thanks for listening to this week's show and the special again this year.

Attention all lovers! Our next special is coming up next week with the Annual Valentine's Day Special. The entire four hours will be filled with some of the greatest love songs of all time. You won't want to miss it when we get underway at 6 pm Pacific.

Is your birthday coming up soon? If so, please let me know the date so that I can help you celebrate your special day on the air. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com and I'll wish you Happy Birthday and play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

The Top Five Countdown this week is from 1959 and the Number One song is Stagger Lee by "Mr. Personality", Lloyd Price. It's playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog. Enjoy!

Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice presents the soulful duo Peaches and Herb. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Close Your Eyes or For Your Love. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

Here's this week's Rock and Roll News Podcast.

Have a great week and see you next Sunday for the next Live show and our annual Valentine's Day Special.

There were three "Peaches" between 1967 and 1980. The original Peaches, Francine Barker, was temporarily replaced by Marlene Mack from 1968-69. In 1978 Herb teamed up with a new Peaches, this time Linda Green, when they recorded Shake Your Groove Thing and Reunited.
