Arthur Alexander Voice Your Choice

Now here is a bit of a twist. Arthur Alexander, our artist in the Voice Your Choice spotlight was both a country music  songwriter and a soul singer. He was born in Sheffield, Alabama on May 10, 1940.

He influenced many recording artists and his songs have been recorded by the likes of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Gerry and The Pacemakers, Otis Redding, Tina Turner and Jerry Lee Lewis. Surprisingly and interestingly too, many North Americans heard Arthur Alexander's music first via the aforementioned recording artists. I know I heard Anna (Go To Him) and You Better Move One, for example, by the Beatles and Rolling Stones respectively years before I heard the original versions by Arthur Alexander.

So in a way, Voice Your Choice is a bit of an education this week as Arthur Alexander is in the spotlight. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either You Better Move On or Anna (Go To Him). I'll Play the winner on next week's show.

This week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of May 20th, 2018

May 20th to 26th, 2018
As I mentioned on my Facebook page at the end of this week's show, it is surprising how quickly four hours can go by. I often find myself all wrapped up in the show when I discover that there is only maybe an hour and ten minutes or so left. As they say, time flies when you're having fun. And as usual, we had lots of fun in the chat room once again this week. The humour is everywhere with some very quick minds contributing to the conversation. As some recent new friends in the chat room say, it really does add an extra dimension to the enjoyment of the show. I invite you to give it a try next Sunday during the live show. Just click Chat on the menu and then follow the easy instructions. We'd love to welcome you to being one of the Nuts in the Hut. Cheers!

Aretha Franklin Voice Your Choice

There is only one Aretha Franklin! "Lady Soul" was born in Memphis, Tennessee on March 25, 1942 and raised in Detroit, Michigan. She was heavily influenced musically by her famous gospel preacher father, Reverend Cecil L. Franklin. Despite recording for two labels JVB/Battle in 1956 and Columbia Records in 1960, she had little success until she was wooed to sign with Atlantic Records where she worked with producer Jerry Wexler.

Between 1961 and 1998 Aretha appeared on the charts a total of 76 times, achieving 17 Top Ten Hits and 15 Gold Records. Isn't that astounding!!!

Treasure Island Oldies presents Aretha Franklin in the Voice Your Choice spotlight. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Ain't No Way or Baby I Love You. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

Everly Brothers Number One Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown 1960

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, the Spotlight Year is 1960. And the unmistakable sound of the Everly Brothers vocal harmonies combined with great songwriters, provided them with many hits over the years.

In 1960 Don and Phil moved from Cadence Records to Warner Brothers and scored their first number one hit with their new label.

Here are the Everly Brothers with the Number One song this week from 1960, Cathy's Clown.

Enjoy!
