This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of July 29th, 2018

July 29th to August 4th, 2018
In the midst of all this intense summer heat, I was glad to play some very cool songs on this week's show. It was also fun to have not just one but three of our Broadcast Partners Network affiliate radio stations join us in the chat room. A big shout out to Darryl and Tom from 106.3 FM WTND in Macomb, Illinois; Lamoyne from Double Q, KWQQ 1610 AM and 106.3 FM in Farmington, Iowa; and Jim with Sunny 1670 KDSX in Bonham, Texas. These stations, along with many others, air Treasure Island Oldies every week. It was very cool to have them join us for a fun time chatting and enjoying the music together. We'd love to have your company in the chat room as well. Next week why not click on the Chat button and, after following the easy instructions, you too can be one of the Nuts In The Hut.

Speaking of next week, be sure to listen for the annual Instrumental Gems Wordless Wonders Special. There was a time when there were many instrumental records released and they were heard on the radio often. That's not the case today, as there is hardly any instrumental music today. However on next week's show, I will bring back all your favourite instrumental hits, including some Lost Treasures that I bet you haven't heard in years. We will get underway with the Instrumental Gems Wordless Wonders Special starting at 6 p.m. Pacific. You won't want to miss this.

Do you have a birthday coming up soon? Please let me know so that I can help you celebrate your special day with the Island listeners around the world. Send the date info to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the show and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

The Top Five Countdown this week is from our Spotlight Year 1967, the Summer of Love. Appearing at the number One spot is Light My Fire by The Doors. It's now playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

For next week's Instrumental Gems Wordless Wonders Special, the Voice Your Choice spotlight shines on the pride of New Orleans, Al Hirt. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Cotton Candy Lovers or Java. I'll play the winner on the next week's show.

Listen to this week's Rock and Roll News Podcast.

Have a great week and see you next Sunday for the annual Instrumental Gems Wordless Wonders Special starting at 6 pm Pacific.

Bye for now.
Michael

Al Hirt Voice Your Choice

Al Hirt was born Alois Maxwell Hirt on November 7, 1922 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Sadly, he died of liver failure on April 27, 1999 at the of 76. Prior to becoming a Grammy Award winning recording artist (for his hit Java), the trumpet virtuoso toured with the likes of Jimmy Dorsey and Tommy Dorsey, Ray McKinley and Horace Heidt. He even formed own Dixieland combo with Pete Fountain in the late 1950s.

Despite the British Music Invasion happening, Al Hirt managed to hit the charts a total of 15 times between 1964  and 1969, including his top five debut.

Treasure Island Oldies is keeping the feel of the Instrumental Gems Wordless Wonders Special alive as we present Voice Your Choice with Al Hirt. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Cotton Candy or Java. I'll play the winning song on next week's show.

The Doors Number One Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown 1967

Paul and Paula Voice Your Choice

Paul and Paula were actually Ray Hildebrand and Jill Jackson. Ray was from Joshua, Texas while Jill was born in McCaney, Texas. I'll bet you didn't know that prior to Hey Paula being released on Phillips Records, as were all their subsequent records, Hey Paula first appeared on LeCam Records in 1962. The artists credited on the label were Jill & Ray. What a name and label change can do for a career! In late December 1962 (December 29th to be precise) Hey Paula was released on Phillips by Paul and Paula and went to Number One for three weeks and it also achieved Gold Record sales status. Pretty good debut I'd say!

Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, the Voice Your Choice spotlight is on Paul and Paula. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Young Lovers or First Quarrel. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

Brenda Lee Number One Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown 1960

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, the Top Five Countdown is from our Spotlight Year, 1960. Brenda Lee was only 16 years old when she had this massive hit song. And in fact, it was her fourth release with Decca Records!

So at the top of the shart this week in 1960, it's Brenda Lee with I'm Sorry.

Enjoy!

Island Update - This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of July 8th, 2018

July 8th to July 14th, 2018

Now that was another very enjoyable four hours spent together. It kind of reminds me of the days when friends would get together and would bring some records to play for everyone to enjoy. The good thing about Treasure Island Oldies is all you need to bring is your ears and memories. LOL I also enjoyed playing some songs from this week's Spotlight Year, 1970, including this week's Top Five Countdown. And what could be better on a hot summer day than to hear some cool summer songs. It was fun to play Summer Sand by Tony Orlando and Dawn, the classic instrumental, Lonely Surfer by Jack Nitzsche, Distant Shores by England's Chad and Jeremy, and many others. If there's a song you'd like me to play for you, send an email to requests@treasureislandoldies.com and I'll do my best.

I continue to receive huge compliments for our Webmaster, Eddy Fisher's beautiful and very creative ads for our specials. I've already had lots of great comments about the annual Instrumental Gems Wordless Wonders Special. Thanks very much and rest assured I have passed them on to Eddy who appreciates it very much. So be sure to mark you calendar for Sunday, August 5th starting at 6 pm Pacific. There was a time when many hits were instrumentals and this special brings back some of the best and biggest instrumental hits throughout the four hours. Over the years, the Instrumental Gems Wordless Wonders has become one of the most popular specials of the year with listeners. Be sure to listen.

It's my pleasure to wish my son, David Godin, a very Happy 36th Birthday. Looking forward to spending a few days together this week for a camping trip near Kamloops, British Columbia. Do you have a birthday coming up soon? Please let me know so that I can help you celebrate your special day with the Island listeners around the world. Send the date info to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the show and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose - Voice our Choice

Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose originally began as a family trio from Dania, Florida. The original members were the siblings Carter Cornelius, Eddie Cornelius, and Rose Cornelius. Their sister, Billie Jo Cornelius, was added later.

They had a "short shelf life" on the charts between 1971 and 1973; however, in that short time, they attained 2 Top Ten hits and 2 Gold Records. Quite a success story!

Treasure Island Oldies presents Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose in the Voice Your Choice spotlight. Cast Your Vote for either Too Late To Turn Back Now or Treat Her Like A Lady. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

Three Dog Night - Number One Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown

Three Dog Night were at the top this week in 1970. From their debut Hot 100 single, the Otis Redding cover, Try A Little Tenderness in 1969 through to their last charted single in 1975, Three Dog Night became huge. What was also interesting was the fact that they had three different lead vocalists: Danny Hutton, Cory Wells and Chuck Negron.

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, the Top Five Countdown has Three Dog Night in at Number One. Here they are in a live TV show performance with Mama Told Me (Not To Come).

Enjoy!

This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of July 1st, 2018

July 1st to July 7th, 2018
Happy Canada Day once again. What a celebration we had with the Music Of Canada Special. Some folks might think that I would be hard pressed to try to come up with enough music by Canadians to fill up four hours. That is certainly not the case. In fact, there are so many great Canadian records released during the '50s, '60s, and '70s to completely fill many four hour shows. Having started my career in radio, later moving to the record business and then again for the last 21 years, back on the radio hosting my weekly show, I have such respect and admiration for the artists who achieved success, either regionally, nationally, or internationally. I wanted to highlight some of the artists who made an impression in just those ways. For example, it was cool to play Stood Up by Larry Lee & The Leesures, a group from London, Ontario, who scored a regional hit in 1963 via an American record label, Destiny Records, out of Ohio. Playing Golden Girl by Montreal's The Rabble brought back many memories for me, as I heard this played by Dave Boxer on CFCF Radio. We all have our unique memories and it was a real pleasure for me to share with you some songs and stories about artists I signed to A&M Records. Telling the story of Bryan Adams calling for me from Vancouver's Little Mountain Sound while I was in Toronto hosting a dinner for another new signing, The Arrows. It brought back such a great feeling. Bryan was so excited to tell me that Tina Turner had just left the studio and he couldn't wait for me to hear what they recorded together. So he held the phone up to the studio monitors and played It's Only Love! That was my first taste of this rock master. That's why I love preparing this Music Of Canada for you. It brings back so many memories for me of growing up in Montreal and hearing such great music coming out of my radio. The music and DJ Dave Boxer inspired me to want to also become a DJ. Unless you are also a DJ, it's hard to appreciate the excitement of introducing a hot record on the air. That's why I look forward to Treasure Island Oldies every week for the past 21 years. Thanks so much for listening to this special edition of the show.

We have a bit of a breather between specials, with the next one being the Annual Instrumental Gems Wordless Wonders Special Live, Sunday, August 5th starting at 6 pm Pacific. There was a time when many hits were instrumentals and this special spotlights some of the best and biggest instrumental hits. Over the years, the Instrumental Gems Wordless Wonders has become one of the most popular specials of the year with listeners. Be sure to listen.

Do you have a birthday coming up soon? Please let me know so that I can help you celebrate your special day with the Island listeners around the world. Send the date info to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the show and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

The Top Five Countdown this week is from 1963. Appearing in the Number One spot it's United States Army Corps members, The Essex. Easier Said Than Done is playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

Voice Your Choice next week presents one of the early Girl Groups, The Cookies. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Chains or Don't Say Nothing Bad (About My Baby). I'll play the winner on the next week's show.

Listen to this week's Rock and Roll News Podcast.

Thanks again for listening to the Music Of Canada Special.

In closing, I'd like to wish my American listeners and friends a very Happy 4th of July.

See you next Sunday here on The Island.

Bye for now.

The Cookies - Voice Your Choice

The original Cookies formed in 1954 in Brooklyn, New York. Doing a lot of background vocals session work for Atlantic Records, brought them to the attention of Ray Charles. For a period of time they became The Raelettes.

However, in 1961 a new line-up of The Cookies formed. They were Dorothy Jones, Earl-Jean McCrea, and Margaret Ross. They initially performed as background vocalists, singing on The Loco Motion by Little Eva, Neil Sedaka's Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, and many others. As The Cookies, they scored several hits.

Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice presents The Cookies. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Chains or Don't Say Nothing Bad (About My Baby). I'll play the winner on next week's show.

The Essex Number One Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown 1963

The first two members of The Essex were Walter Vickers, Rodney Taylor. They then brought in Billy Hill and and Rudolph Johnson. Finally came Anita Humes and The Essex were complete and all members served in the United States Marine Corps.

In 1963 they scored very big with a number one single. This week on Treasure Island Oldies, the Top Five Countdown is from 1963. At the top of the charts it's The Essex with Easier Said Than Done.

Enjoy!
