This Week on Treasure Island Oldies Week of September 23rd 2018

September 23rd to September 29th, 2018
I sure had a good time with you again this week on the Island. I was so glad that the "frog" in my throat during the entire show last week was nowhere in sight this week. Maybe it helped that I called wildlife control and they came and took the "frog" away to a new home. LOL I'd also like to thank you for your kind emails hoping I get better soon. They worked! Also big thanks to Linda Gehres who told me the story of her going to see The Beatles movie Help! with her aunt in San Francisco (Help! was part of the Top Five Countdown from 1965, this week's Spotlight Year). What an adventure she had. Linda also mentioned how much she liked Rick's Rare Rock & Roll Relic, I'm Nobody's Baby Now by Reparata & The Delrons. In her email to me she also included interesting information about the group and the variations in the lineup through the years; to the point that the original Reparata was not even in the group anymore and a different lead singer was called Reparata. Thanks for this, Linda. I am sure Rick Canode in Madison, Wisconsin will appreciate the additional info on his Relic this week. I look forward to hearing from you too. michael@treasureislandoldies.com is how to reach me.

This week's BBC - Big Beatles Classic - was Blackbird from the White Album with Paul McCartney sounding great on the lead vocal. The feel of Blackbird made me think of a song on his new LP, Egypt Station, called Happy With You. I'm glad I decided to play it for you and it sounded great. I read a review of this album which commented that it was his best album since Band On The Run. In my opinion, it is his best and most consistent album in many years. I sure am enjoying listening to it. With some riffs and production and arrangement approaches scattered throughout the album, it gives me the feel of listening to a Beatles record I've never heard before.

We're just a couple of weeks away from celebrating Canadian Thanksgiving on Treasure Island Oldies. I invite you to join me Sunday, October 7th for the live show and throughout the week on our affiliate radio stations. Check out the Broadcast Partners Network page for the days and times to hear this week's show.

Happy Birthday and best wishes go out to long time listener and Chat Room regular, Ed Sanderson in Toronto, Ontario. And if your birthday is coming up soon, please let me know. Send the date info to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the show and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

The Top Five Countdown this week is from our Spotlight Year 1965. And sitting at the top of the charts was the '60s protest song by Barry McGuire, formerly with the New Christy Minstrels. Eve Of Destruction is now playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

Speaking of having a frog in my throat, next week the Voice Your Choice spotlight is on another great great R&B artist, Clarence "Frogman" Henry. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either (I Don't Know Why) But I Do or You Always Hurt The One You Love. I'll play the winner next week's show.

Listen to this week's Rock and Roll News Podcast.

Have a great week and I look forward to sharing another show with you next week.
Bye for now.

Clarence "Frogman" Henry Voice Your Choice

Our Voice Your Choice artist next week on Treasure Island Oldies opened 18 concerts for The Beatles in Canada and the United States in 1964!

Clarence "Frogman" Henry was born in New Orleans in 1937. He earned his nickname "Frogman" when he improvised what would become his trademark croak for Ain't Got No Home. The A&R man for Chess Records, Paul Gayten, heard it and had Clarence record it in the same style. Upon release it became a big hit and jump-started his career.

Treasure Island Oldies is pleased to present Clarence "Frogman" Henry on Voice Your Choice. Cast you vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either (I Don't Know Why) But I Do or You Always Hurt The One You Love. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

Barry McGuire Number One Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown 1965

The times they were a-changing indeed. In 1965, a protest song written the previous year by P.F. Sloan, became a best seller and a radio favourite.

Eve Of Destruction by Barry McGuire, formerly with the New Christy Minstrels, went to the top of the charts this week in 1965 on the Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown.

Check out this interesting video clip.

Enjoy!

This Week On Treasure Island Oldies Week of September 16 2018

September 16th to September 22nd, 2018
Well that was an odd coincidence! Just as I started this week's show, I got a tickle in my throat that would not go away. So it was me and my "pet frog" for the entire four hours. Thanks for putting up with my distorted voice. LOL Nonetheless, I persevered and played some great songs from this week's Spotlight Year, 1962. It was cool listening to Lie To Me by Brook Benton, a big hit for him but one you rarely ever hear at all. I had not heard Break It To Me Gently by Brenda Lee and it was so good to hear Miss Dynamite and her amazing voice. I heard from listener Linda Gehres who asked about the first song I played during the Rock & Roll Reunion. It was Friday Night On A Dollar Bill by Huelyn Duvall. This Rockabilly singer from Texas sure sounded like he was emulating Elvis Presley. Thanks for the great note, Linda. Also a big hello to Tammy Maynard who commented on me playing Jim Croce and her memory of hearing the sad news of his tragic airplane crash. I sure enjoy hearing from you Tammy and all the other listeners who keep in touch via email. My email if you'd like to send a note to me is michael@treasureislandoldies.com. And for a complete list of all the songs I played during this week's show, go to the Listen page and scroll down to the Playlist.

If you are a Paul McCartney or Beatles fan, be sure to check out Paul's brand new album, Egypt Station. This "heritage" artist has released his best album in years, in my opinion. It was a lot of fun for me to give you a preview again this week by playing Fuh You. I ordered and was glad to get my deluxe two LP vinyl set in a cool tri-fold album cover. And it sure sounds great on vinyl.

In Canada we celebrate Thanksgiving at the actual end of the summer harvest in early October. I look forward to celebrating Canadian Thanksgiving with you on the show Sunday, October 9th. Please join me.

Is your birthday coming up soon? If so, please let me know so that I can help you celebrate your special day with the Island listeners around the world. Send the date info to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the show and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

The Top Five Countdown this week is from our Spotlight Year 1962. And sitting at the top of the charts is the first big hit for the Four Seasons. Sherry is now playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

Next week the Voice Your Choice spotlight is on another great great R&B artist. This time it's Clarence Carter. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Slip Away or Snatching It Back. I'll play the winner next week's show.

Listen to this week's Rock and Roll News Podcast.

Thanks again for listening to this week's show and I look forward to your company again next week. I hope to not have the frog in my throat by next week. LOL

Bye for now.

Clarence Carter Voice Your Choice

Clarence Carter was born January 14, 1936 and was blind from birth. He attended Alabama State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music.

One of the many songs he wrote, Tell Daddy, inspired Etta James to record the "answer song", Tell Mama. Another record of his was the raunchy seasonal hit Back Door Santa, which I play during the Christmas season on Treasure Island Oldies. His biggest hit was Patches, a smash in 1970 selling over one million copies.

Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice presents Clarence Carter. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Slip Away or Snatching It Back. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

This Week on Treasure Island Oldies Week of September 9th 2018

September 9th to September 15th, 2018
It was a real pleasure spending four hours with you again this week on the Island. It was fun to go way back to 1957 for this week's Spotlight Year. I was mentioning in the chat room how the Spotlight Year adds a cool tone to the entire playlist. I was also pleased to play some real Lost Treasures from 1957 including What Can I Do by Donnie Elbert, his successful debut single. You may recall he did a cover version of the Supremes hit Where Did You Love Go in 1972. I also played another rare one, Mister Fire Eyes, by Bonnie Guitar. For a complete rundown of all the songs I played on this week's show, just go to the Listen page and scroll down to the Playlist section.

I heard from Robert Lerbro in Sweden, who enjoys listening to the show on Radio 88 in Gothenberg.  He said he heard an instrumental song on the August 126th show that featured a Hammond organ. I wrote back telling him that it was Last Night by The Mar-Keys. He replied how pleased he was as he would like to play it on his own Hammond organ and he sent this photo. Great hearing from you Robert!

I'm looking forward to celebrating Canadian Thanksgiving with you on the show, live Sunday, October 7th. I'll play some appropriate songs for the occasion, including Thank You For Being My Friend by Andrew Gold and Sam & Dave's I Thank You, and many others.

Happy Birthday wishes go out this week to Scott Harmon in Phoenix City, Alabama, and to my long time friend Jools Clarke in Los Angeles, California. Jools and I worked together at A&M Records and have remained good friends ever since. Is your birthday is approaching? If so, please let me know so that I can help you celebrate your special day with the Island listeners around the world. Send the date info to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the show and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

The Top Five Countdown this week is from our Spotlight Year 1957. And sitting at the top of the charts is Paul Anka. Diana is now playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

Next week the Voice Your Choice spotlight is on the great R&B artist, Chuck Willis. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either What Am I Living For or C.C. Rider. I'll play the winner next week's show.

Chuck Willis: Voice Your Choice

Chuck Willis was born January 31, 1926 and passed away from peritonitis at the very young age of 32 on April 10, 1958 during surgery for stomach ulcers. Known as The King of the Stroll for his dancing of the dance craze the Stroll, he was also referred to as the Sheik of Shake.

His friend Screaming Jay Hawkins suggested he wear a turban during his performances as a gimmick, and it stuck.

As a songwriter, many artists requested he write for them, including Ruth Brown for whom he wrote Oh What A Dream.

When he passed away he had a current single on release, Hang Up My Rock & Roll Shoes. However, it was flipped over and the B side, What Am I Living For, became the hit, selling over one million copies and becoming the top R&B song of 1958.

Treasure Island Oldies is pleased to present Chuck Willis in the Voice Your Choice spotlight. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either What Am I Living For or C.C. Rider. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

Paul Anka Number One Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown 1957

Paul Anka holds down the Number One spot on this week's Top Five Countdown from our Spotlight Year 1957.

For a complete list of all the songs I played on the show, just go to the Listen page and scroll down to the Playlist. Follow me and you'll be kept up to date on the weekly events on the show. And you certainly won't be inundated with a ton of alerts.

Chuck Berry Voice Your Choice

Chuck Berry was born Charles Edward Anderson Berry on October 18, 1926 in St. Louis, Missouri. He became one of the most influential recording artists, songwriters, and performers of the Rock and Roll era. His first record, Maybelline, was an instant success and he has never looked back since he got his start with Chess records.

He's been lauded with many awards including a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammy Awards in 1984, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, and many others.

He appeared on the charts a total of 27 times between 1955 and 1973. Surprisingly, he only ever had one Number 1 song in his career, despite scoring 7 Top Ten hits. And to many fans, that Number One song was his worst release ever. Not to worry though; it is not a contender for Voice Your Choice.

Treasure Island Oldies is pleased to present the poet laureate of Rock & Roll, Chuck Berry. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Maybelline or Nadine (Is It You?). I'll play the winner on next week's show.

Donovan Number One Top Five Countdown 1966

The summer of 1966 was a great year for music. And as we approach the end of summer, this week's Top Five Countdown included some great summer songs.

Donovan is Number One this week with Sunshine Superman. Here he is in a rare clip from a TV show in France.

Enjoy!
