Thiis Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of May 25th, 2014

May 25th, 2014 to May 31st, 2014

I love this time of year. The flowers are in bloom, the days continue to get warmer and it remains light outside longer. And it’s very nice to have the evening light as I do the show live Sundays. Spring is in the air!

It was nice visiting with the regulars in the Chat Room again this week. You really should give it a try for yourself. You’ll find very warm and welcoming folks who really enjoy spending time together sharing the memories and the great music. Next Sunday Click Chat and follow the instructions and we look forward to welcoming you to the Treasure Island Oldies Chat Room.

Happy Birthday to Bruce Toews in Winnipeg, Manitoba, a long time listener. It’s great to be able to send out greetings for your special day, but I need to know in advance. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I’ll play Birthday by The Beatles for you and wish you all the best on the air.

There are three back to back specials coming up in June. The Annual Father’s Day Special is June 15th, with the following week the Summer Beach Party on June 22nd. Then we wrap up the month with the Annual Made In Canada Special, June 29th. Phew! What a month June is going to be on the Island!

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing another song by the great group, The Grass Roots, with Midnight Confessions. It’s our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Voice Your Choice presents a great British R&B/Rocker – Joe Cocker. He sure had a way of taking a well-known song and making it his own with an arrangement only he could deliver. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either With A Little Help From My Friends or The Letter. It's going to be a tough decision for many I think. I’ll play the winner in the 3rd hour of next week’s show.

Here’s the Rock and Roll News for the week of May 25th.

Listen to the Top 5 Countdown from 1966.

Well that’s about all for this week. Take it easy and I look forward to your company next week right here on the “Island”.

Bye for now.

Joe Cocker - Voice Your Choice

He was born John Robert Cocker on may 20, 1044 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. He satrted out in the typical British way in the late 1950s, with his own skiffle band, later becoming Vance Arnold and The Avengers. In the mid-60s he formed a new group, The Grease Band and was "launched" in the North American market as a result of his performance at Woodstock in 1969.

The following year he, along with Leon Russell, put together 43-piece revue they called Mad Dogs and Englishmen. The tour was successful, a live recording was made, a movie was filmed of the tour, and the rest is history. Joe Cocker became very popular. Interestingly, he seemed to always record songs that were either hits for others or written by others. For example, Billy Preston wrote You Are So Beautiful.

Treasure Island Oldies is pleased to present Joe Cocker on Voice Your Choice with two outstanding songs. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either With A Little Help From My Friends or The Letter. I'll play the winner in the 3rd hour. I wonder if it will end up in a tie vote; both songs are great.

The Grass Roots - Song of the Week

I played Things I Should Have Said by The Grass Roots in the 2nd hour of this week's show. It struck me just how good they were as a group. Good songs and lead vocals, excellent harmonies and great production. All in all, I think the band was under-rated. So I decided to play another song for you here at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

Here are The Grass Roots: Rob Grill, Warren Entner, Creed Bratton and Rick Coonce (who was also on the TV show The Office. He played the character "Creed"), with Midnight Confessions. It's our Song of the Week.

Enjoy!

I'm pleased to confirm three more stations to our ever-growing Broadcast Partners Network.

The station is being programmed for listening on demand. You can choose the specific show you'd like to hear when it's convenient for your schedule.

Able Radio Cork in Ireland will air the show Thursdays from 8 pm to Midnight.

WRSG-FM serves the tri-cities of Sistersville, Middlebourne and St. Mary's in West Virginia, a service of Tyler County Board of Education. They will air the show twice per week, Mondays from 8 pm to Midnight and again Sundays from 12 Noon to 4 pm.

I look forward to hearing from the listeners of these stations and to being on their station every week.

This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of May 18th, 2014

May 18th, 2014 to May 24th, 2014

Another week and another four hours together on Treasure Island Oldies. Even after bringing the show to you every week for over 17 years now, it is still fun , fresh and exciting. Thank you. And I’m pleased to let you know that we have yet another station joining the Broadcast Partners Network. I know you join me in welcoming WRSG-FM, serving the tri-cities of Sistersville, Middlebourne and St. Mary’s in West Virginia. We’ll be on the station every Thursday from 8 pm to Midnight. And over in Ireland, Able Radio Cork will air the show twice weekly: Mondays from 8 pm to Midnight and again Sundays from 12 Noon to 4 pm. Peachland Radio in Peachland, British Columbia will have all of the shows on their station for listening on demand. Knowing how busy people are, they don’t want to schedule specific shows and certain days and times. They just had the official launch this weekend with their First Annual Peach Jam Festival. I sincerely hope it was a big success. I am pleased and proud to be on these three new stations.

Mark your calendars for our upcoming specials. Sunday, June 15th it’s the Annual Father’s Day Special, with the following week the Summer Beach Party, June 25th and then on June 29th it’ll be our Annual Made In Canada Special. If there is a song you’d like me to play during one of these specials, be sure to let me know. Click Requests on any page of the website or Call the Treasure Island Oldies Listener Line at 206-339-0709.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Cora Quinn in Peoria, Illinois. She even called into the show with a couple of requests. And she didn’t even mention it was her birthday this week. But I already knew! If your birthday is coming up soon, let me know. I’d love to wish you Happy Birthday on the air and play Birthday by The Beatles for you. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing another song by Jay and the Americans. This time it’s Cara Mia and it’s our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Voice Your Choice spotlights a teen group from the Rock and Roll era, Joe Bennett and the Sparkletones. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Penny Loafers And Bobby Socks or Black Slacks. I’ll play the winner in the 3rd hour of next week’s show. It seems they specialized in songs for the wardrobe. LOL

Here’s the Rock and Roll News for the week of May 18th.

Listen to the Top 5 Countdown from 1963.

Joe Bennett And The Sparkletones - Voice Your Choice

Joe Bennett and the Sparkletones were a teen rock and roll band from Spartanburg, South Carolina. The guys in the band were Joe Bennett (vocals, guitar; born in 1941), Howard Childress (guitar), Wayne Arthur (bass) and Irving Denton (drums).

They only had three songs on the Billboard chart, with their 3rd single not reaching the top 100 but peaked at #105.

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice presents Joe Bennett and the Sparkletones. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Penny Loafers And Bobby Socks or Black Slacks. I'll play the winner in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

Jay And The Americans - Song of the Week

I played Some Enchanted Evening on Treasure Island Oldies this week so decided to play another song for you by Jay and the Americans here at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

It's one of their biggest hits and a fantastic song. Here are Jay and the Americans with Cara Mia. It's our Song of the Week.

Enjoy!

Just Finished Reading: Bill Medley, The Time Of My Life

I had the good fortune to be sent a review copy of the brand new book by The Righteous Brothers' Bill Medley: The Time Of My Life.

After reading it, I feel like I've come to know Bill Medley as a person, father and hugely successful entertainer, singer and producer. The best adjective I can use to describe him is 'human".

If you are passionate about your music and your favourite artists, you should definitely get your hands on a copy of this riveting, yet breezy overview of the life of one of the top performers and most successful singers ever!
