This Week On Treasure Island Oldies

May 29th, 2011 to June 4th, 2011

This week's Update is a bit late but I do have a good excuse. If you recall about a couple of months ago on the show I featured a new group, Fitz and the Tantrums, and played their debut single, Money Grabber. On Monday night I went to see them in concert in Vancouver at The Venue. It's an old movie theatre downtown that has been converted into a club, and it sure works well. There were about 250 - 300 people in attendance and were they ever enthusiastic for the group. Fitz and the Tantrums are great musicians and both Fitz and Noelle Scaggs can really sing! The crowd loved them. At the end of the show, the entire band hung out to say hi to their fans and signed autographs, whether or not a purchase was made at the merchandising booth. What was really interesting is that they had three different T-shirts, their CD, as well as the album on vinyl! Of all that was available, they completely sold out of the vinyl. Fortunately I bought the last copy and everyone autographed it for me. We had a great conversation talking about my A&M Records Vice-President days. In telling them I signed Bryan Adams, I said I sure recognize great talent and they are fantastic. They were very pleased. A picture was taken of Fitz and myself and it is posted on the Main Page of the website. I sure hope they continue to do well and become household names. I'll be able to say I knew them when...

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Bruce Toews in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It was good playing Birthday by The Beatles for Bruce. And if you have a birthday coming up, be sure to let me know. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com.

Listener Scott Frieden commented on my Facebook page about last week's Song of the Week - Black Is Black by Los Bravos. He asked if I could play their follow-up hit, Bring A Little Lovin' on the show soon. Will do, Scott.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing The Animals in a clip from the TV show Hullabaloo with guest host George Maharis from the TV show Route 66. The Animals perform It's My Life, which was debuted on the show. It's our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

We have tested VLC Media Player and it plays back either the Live feed of Windows Media or the 24/7 Windows Media feed (it also plays Real Media files). We encourage you to support such excellent open source programs. Visit the VLC Project and download your copy of their Media Payer for Windows, Linux, Mac and Unix.

Let the world know you're a proud listener of Treasure Island Oldies. Send in your name, photo, city and province or state for the Listener Gallery to michael@treasureislandoldies.com and our Webmaster, Eddy Fisher, will post it on the Listener Gallery page along with the many already received.

This Week On Treasure Island Oldies

May 22nd, 2011 to May 28th, 2011

No matter where you live in the world or what your weather is, it's always hot and cool on the Island! Yep, we've got hot hits and cool Lost Treasures for you every week. And many thanks to the new listeners who have gotten in touch with me to say hi. Interestingly, the common thread among their comments is how much they are enjoying the show. Hearing such a great variety of oldies and some songs they hadn't heard in so many years, is just great. A Treasure Island Oldies Blog reader left an anonymous comments regarding the post last week about the passing of Bob Flanagan of the Four Freshmen: "Truly one of the most unique sounds these men produced. I loved every sound they put out. Flanagan gave the Freshman it's great style and sound." Thanks, and I look forward to your comments on any topic relating to the show and the music.

While there are no listener birthdays taking place this week that I know of, I invite you to let me and all the listeners around the world know about your birthday. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I'll play our official birthday theme: Birthday by The Beatles.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing Los Bravos with their debut smash hit, Black Is Black. It's our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Voice Your Choice presents Neil Sedaka with two of his thirty charted hits: Happy Birthday, Sweet Sixteen and Breaking Up Is Hard to Do. Cast your vote for the song you'd like to hear at the Voice Your Choice page. The winning song will be played in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

Neil Sedaka - Voice Your Choice

Neil Sedaka was born March 13, 1939 and began studying piano in elementary school. He was on the path of pursuing classical music when he was in Lincoln High School until he met Howard Greenfield. From then on it was classical music's loss and pop music great gain! They formed a songwriting team, with Neil composing the music and Howard as the lyricist, and their highly successful partnership lasted over 20 years. They scored ten Top Twenty hits, six of them in the Top Ten and one #1!

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice spotlights Neil Sedaka with two songs from the great Sedaka/Greenfield writing partnership, Happy Birthday, Sweet Sixteen and Breaking Up Is Hard To Do.

Come to the Voice Your Choice page and make your selection. The song with the most votes will be played in Hour 3 of next week's show.

Los Bravos - Song of the Week

Los Bravos were formed in Spain but the lead singer Mike Kogel, also known as Mike Kennedy, was born in Germany. While they only charted three singles, Black Is Black, Going Nowhere and Bring A Little Lovin', their first and third records have become rock classics.

This week the Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing Los Bravos with their breakthrough worldwide smash hit, Black Is Black.

It's our Song of the Week.

Enjoy!

Bob Flanagan Of The Four Freshmen Has Died

Bob Flanagan, founding member and tenor singer of the Four Freshmen, died May 15 from congestive heart failure at his home in Las Vegas. He was 84. Originally called the Toppers, the group was formed in 1952 at the Jordan School of Music at Butler University in Indianapolis by Bob, his two cousins and a friend. The group's intricate harmonies influenced many later groups, including the Lettermen and the Beach Boys.

The Freshmen, however, patterned their sound after the arrangements of Stan Kenton's orchestra. It was Kenton who helped them get a contract with Capitol Records. Their first single, "It's A Blue World," reached #30 in 1952, followed by "Day By Day," (#72-1955), "Charmaine" (#69-1956) and "Graduation Day" (#17-1956). The quartet also charted eight albums in the top 40 between 1954 and 1960 and won six Grammy awards. Bob retired from singing with the group in 1992 but continued as its manager until his death.

This Week On Treasure Island Oldies

May 15th, 2011 to May 21st, 2011

It surprises me just how quickly a week goes by and we are together again to share another four hours of great music and memories. At times, it seems the show is just over when I am getting prepared for the next and doing it live once again. I love it! And thanks to you, your comments and requests continue to make it all worthwhile. And when a special comes up in the calendar, it's always a lot of fun. And we have three weeks of specials coming up. First is our Annual Father's Day Special on Sunday, June 19th, then our 15th Annual Summer Beach Party on June 22nd, followed by our Annual Made In Canada Special, July 3rd. Mark your calendars and be sure to let me know if there is a song request you would like to hear during one of the specials. It's always easy to get in touch with me. Click the Requests button on any page of the website or call our 24/7 Listener Line at 206-339-0709.

I appreciate reading your comments at my Facebook page and some recent contributors include broadcaster Don Lehn who commented about the death of legendary record producer, Jack Richardson. He also passed on his thoughts regarding John Walker from the Walker Brothers, also having recently died. Scott Frieden wrote about the passing of Spanky & Our Gang's Nigel Pickering. Recent new Facebook friends include Cheryl Nye, Linda DuBray, Andrew Trentacosta, Mark Greenhalgh, Lisa Sabinorio, Joe Morgan, and my long-time friend Shari Ulrich. Shari was a member of The Hometown Band who had a great hit song called Flying. Check it out at YouTube. She has a fantastic voice and is a real sweetheart. I had the pleasure of working with Shari during my time as head of A&R for A&M Records. Another long-time friend of mine, Bill Henderson from the group Chilliwack has just become a friend on Facebook. You can too. Click the Facebook link.

Thom Mitchell, a brand new listener, wrote to me after hearing the fist song on the show to say he recognized the music at the beginning of the show. His parents had the album but he could remember who the artist was or what it was called. I wrote back to say that what he heard as our Top of the Hour theme music is Quiet Village by the Exotic Sounds of Martin Denny. He thought it may have been Arthur Lyman who had a hit with an instrumental version of Yellow Bird. Coincidentally, Arthur Lyman was a member of Martin Denny's band.

As you know I like a wide variety of music, and last year I helped out a friend with some creative input for his album and I was grateful for his gracious thank you to me on the album liner notes. I'm pleased to say that Gabriel Mark Hasselbach won Album of the Year and Instrumentalist of the Year at the jazz music Wave Awards held in Toronto a couple of weeks ago. Congratulations Gabriel!

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing The Grass Roots in a performance from the Jimmy Durante Show (of all TV shows!). Check out Jimmy's introduction of the band. The quality is not the greatest, but certainly worth watching and hearing. The Grass Roots are on tour and will be in Toronto soon. Here they are with Let's Live For Today, our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Voice Your Choice features Nancy Sinatra with Sugar Town and with Lee Hazlewood on Summer Wine. Which song would you like to hear? Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page. We'll play the winning song in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

Jack Richardson - Legendary Record Producer Has Died

I am sad to report that my friend Jack Richardson has died. When I joined A&M Records in 1975 to run the Artist & Repertoire department, the first artist I signed to the label was Malcolm Tomlinson. I met with Jack and he produced Malcolm's debut album, Coming Out Of Nowhere. Jack was a consummate professional and one hell of a nice man.

Here is the wire story.

Michael

Legendary Canadian record producer and former Fanshawe College professor Jack Richardson died Friday, those close to him have told The Free Press.
Richardson had been in frail health and died at University Hospital on Friday night. He was 81.
Richardson came to London decades ago after a stellar career producing hit records for such stars as The Guess Who, Alice Cooper and Bob Seger.
He was chair of the industry advisory board for the Music Industry Arts Project at Fanshawe College in the late 1970s. In 1985 he became the audio production instructor for the MIA program at the college.
The Junos and CARAS recognized his leading role in Canadian music by naming the producer of the year award The Jack Richardson Producer of the Year award in 2002.
After success in Toronto as a musician and work in advertising, Richardson turned to rock and roll in the 1960s.
In 1968, with Allan Macmillan, Ben McPeek and Peter Clayton, he founded Nimbus 9 Productions and signed as their first artist, The Guess Who. In 1972 he designed and built Nimbus 9's Soundstage Recording Studio at Toronto.
During this time, Richardson worked as a record producer and took the helm for dozens of albums for Canadian, American and international acts including The Boss Brass, Poco, Christopher Ward, Rough Trade, The Association, Badfinger, The Toronto Chamber Orchestra, The Brecker Brothers, Hagood Hardy and the Canadian Brass.
Of his 14 albums for The Guess Who, 11 were Canadian gold, five were Canadian platinum with five gold and three platinum records in the United States. His records with Alice Cooper and Seger also achieved gold and platinum status in Canada and the U.S. Richardson produced 27 Billboard charted singles and more than 20 Billboard charted albums and has received 38 gold and platinum awards. In 1986 the CARAS/Juno, Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award was presented to him. Richardson is a member of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the London Music Hall of Fame. SOCAN presented Richardson with its Special Achievement Award in 1988. In 2003, Richardson was awarded the Order of Canada.
London documentary filmmaker Bruce Carter's 2002 film Adventures in Rock aka Adventures in Rock and Roll told Richardson's Jack Richardson as the man who almost single-handedly built the Canadian rock and roll scene starting in the mid 1960s.  Featured in the documentary are ex-Guess Who stars Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings, Alice Cooper, and producers Bob Ezrin and Phil Ramone, who talk about his influence on their careers. (Cummings plays the RBC Theatre at the John Labatt Centre on Saturday night).
In London, Richardson is recognized by the Jack Richardson Music Awards, the city's only not-for-profit celebration of its musical excellence. Richardson agreed to let organizers use his name and encouraged their education programming. He appeared at several JRMA events over the years. Richardson attended the 2011 JRMA gala at the London Music Hall on April 10. He was greeted with a standing ovation and honoured by performers and fans all evening. Richardson signed autographs and chatted with a new generation of London music scenesters that night after the formal ceremonies had ended.

Nigel Pickering of Spanky & Our Gang Has Died At Age 81

Nigel Pickering, guitarist, vocalist and founding member of Spanky & Our Gang, died of liver cancer Thursday (May 5) in St. Augustine, Florida. He was 81. Born in 1929 in Pontiac, Michigan, Nigel originally performed in a Milwaukee group called the Westernaires in the fifties, then moved on to a trio with Ken Hodges called the Folksters. After their breakup, Nigel and Ken joined forces with Elaine "Spanky" McFarlane, honing the act that eventually became Spanky & Our Gang at a Chicago nightclub where Spanky worked. Signed to local Mercury Records, the group scored three top 40 hits off their debut album ("Spanky And Our Gang") in 1967-- "Sunday Will Never Be The Same" (#9), "Making Every Minute Count" (#31) and "Lazy Day" (#14) and two more off their second album ("Like To Get To Know You") in 1968-- "Sunday Mornin'" (#30) and "Like To Get To Know You" (#17). But "Give A Damn," despite being used by the New York Urban Coalition to promote racial harmony, was banned by many stations for its use of profanity and three subsequent singles from a third album never made the top 85 nationally. Lead guitarist Malcolm Hale's death in late 1968 and Spanky's marriage and resulting pregnancy eventually caused the group to disband. Nigel recorded three solo albums and even acted in low-budget films. He also ran restaurants in Spain (he signed away all his royalties to open it) and in California. He was married five times (at one point to two women at the same time since he couldn't track down one wife to divorce her). At his 81st birthday party, where he sang for the last time with Spanky, he was fatalistic about the future-- "I'll ride the waves of Providence, hoping for the best but expecting the worst."

John Walker of The Wakler Brothers Has Died

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – John Walker, a member of the 1960s pop trio the Walker Brothers, has died in Los Angeles, a statement on his web site said.
He was 67, and had reportedly been suffering from liver cancer. He died at his home on Saturday evening.
The Walker Brothers -- who were not brothers, nor named Walker in real life -- enjoyed bigger success in Britain than in their native United States. Bandmate Scott Walker retains a large cult following across Europe.
The group topped the U.K. charts with covers of "Make It Easy On Yourself" and "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore." The songs peaked at No. 16 and No. 13, respectively, in the U.S.
They formed in Hollywood in 1964, and promptly moved to London where they secured a recording contract. Their version of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "Make it Easy On Yourself," first popularized by soul singer Jerry Butler, was released in 1965. "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore," first sung by Frankie Valli, came out the following year.
They broke up in 1968, but a mid-1970s reunion yielded a top-10 U.K. hit with a version of Tom Rush's "No Regrets." All told, the group sold more than 23 million records, according to Walker's Web site.
John Walker was born John Maus in New York City in 1943, and raised in the Los Angeles area. After working as an actor and session musician, he formed the Walker Brothers with Noel Engel (Scott Walker) and Gary Leeds (Gary Walker). His role as lead vocalist was gradually taken over by Scott Walker.
"He was also a fantastic guitarist which a lot of people didn't realize," Gary Walker said in a statement. "He was a compassionate song-writer and a gentleman with lots of style.
"The three of us had the most incredible adventure together, all the time not realizing that we were part of pop history in the making. His music will live on, and therefore so will John," he added.

Bobby Darin - Voice Your Choice

He was born Walden Robert Cassotto on May 14, 1936 in The Bronx, New York. Bobby Darin catapulted to fame with his very first record, Splish Splash, shooting to #3 and attaining Gold status. Not a bad start!!

Throughout his career, Bobby had 41 singles on the Billboard chart, including 4 Gold Records and 9 Top Ten songs. In 1963 he was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in the movie Captain Newman, MD.

This multi-talented vocalist/pianist/songwriter/entertainer could have continued on for many many years with much success; sadly he died of heart failure at age 37 on December 20, 1973. I vividly recall that night as I was working at CFCF Radio in Montreal at the time and reading the bulletin from the newswire. Later that night I did a one hour tribute to Bobby Darin on my show.

This week on Voice Your Choice we once again spotlight two songs for you to choose from, both signature tunes for Bobby: Eighteen yellow Roses or If I Were A Carpenter.

Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page. We'll play the winning song in the 4rd hour of next week`s show.

Abba - "Mother's Day" Song of the Week

In keeping with our Mother's Day Special, the Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing the pride of Sweden, ABBA and Does Your Mother Know.

It's our Song of the Week.

This Week On Treasure Island Oldies

May 1st, 2011 to May 7th, 2011

What a great 14th Anniversary celebration of Treasure Island Oldies we had this week! Thank you for your kind emails and phone calls, they are very much appreciated. I continue to be honoured to bring you the show every week. I was asked to give a short version of how the show came about. Ok here we go. Some of you may know that I began my career in radio as both DJ and Music Director. In 1975 I joined A&M Records and eventually became Vice-President of A&R (Artist & Repertoire), it's the "talent scout" division. I moved to Vancouver in 1986 to start my artist management, music publisher and industry consultant company. Michael Godin Management Inc. continues to exist today and it manages the business of Treasure Island Oldies. In late 1996, my friend DJ Tom Lucas had started doing a new thing called Internet radio with his show the Worldwide Retro Rock Request Show. I had never lost my desire to be on the air again and so I met the head of the Dowco Entertainment Network, Hugh Dobbie Jr. and we discussed my idea for an oldies show. I wanted to be able to play the big hits for sure, but wanted to also delve deeper into the artist or group's hits, beyond their Top 10 or Top 20. And then I thought about what music I'd like to hear if I was on a deserted island. So the idea of Treasure Island Oldies was born and it debuted May 4, 1997. Technologically speaking, it was the era of the 56k dialup modem and the connections were never stable. I refer to it as the "2 tins and a piece of string era". We persevered and so did the transmission, to today where we are in HiFi Stereo with a great broadband feed in both Real Media and Windows Media via the MediaOnTap Network from the studios at INSINC. Not only that, but we have grown to the point that we are now heard on almost 30 FM, AM and Online radio stations around the world every week. Little River Band Happy Anniversary - Song of the Week

How very fitting to have the Little River Band for our Song of the Week. They are a perfect way to celebrate the 14th Anniversary of Treasure Island Oldies this week. We started May 4, 1997 and have been with you every week since that date.

So here's to you. Thank You for listening for so many years. It is you that had made Treasure Island Oldies one of the longest running oldies radio shows in the world on the Internet. And to our Broadcast Partners Network of radio stations in across Canada and the United States, Sweden, England, New Zealand, Singapore, Scotland, it's great to be part of your stations. Thank You.

Here's the Little River Band in a live concert performance in Melbourne, Australia in 1983 of Happy Anniversary.

Happy 14th Anniversary!
Michael
