It surprises me just how quickly a week goes by and we are together again to share another four hours of great music and memories. At times, it seems the show is just over when I am getting prepared for the next and doing it live once again. I love it! And thanks to you, your comments and requests continue to make it all worthwhile. And when a special comes up in the calendar, it's always a lot of fun. And we have three weeks of specials coming up. First is our Annual Father's Day Special on Sunday, June 19th, then our 15th Annual Summer Beach Party on June 22nd, followed by our Annual Made In Canada Special, July 3rd. Mark your calendars and be sure to let me know if there is a song request you would like to hear during one of the specials. It's always easy to get in touch with me. Click the Requests button on any page of the website or call our 24/7 Listener Line at 206-339-0709.
I appreciate reading your comments at my Facebook page and some recent contributors include broadcaster Don Lehn who commented about the death of legendary record producer, Jack Richardson. He also passed on his thoughts regarding John Walker from the Walker Brothers, also having recently died. Scott Frieden wrote about the passing of Spanky & Our Gang's Nigel Pickering. Recent new Facebook friends include Cheryl Nye, Linda DuBray, Andrew Trentacosta, Mark Greenhalgh, Lisa Sabinorio, Joe Morgan, and my long-time friend Shari Ulrich. Shari was a member of The Hometown Band who had a great hit song called Flying. Check it out at YouTube. She has a fantastic voice and is a real sweetheart. I had the pleasure of working with Shari during my time as head of A&R for A&M Records. Another long-time friend of mine, Bill Henderson from the group Chilliwack has just become a friend on Facebook. You can too. Click the Facebook link.
Thom Mitchell, a brand new listener, wrote to me after hearing the fist song on the show to say he recognized the music at the beginning of the show. His parents had the album but he could remember who the artist was or what it was called. I wrote back to say that what he heard as our Top of the Hour theme music is Quiet Village by the Exotic Sounds of Martin Denny. He thought it may have been Arthur Lyman who had a hit with an instrumental version of Yellow Bird. Coincidentally, Arthur Lyman was a member of Martin Denny's band.
As you know I like a wide variety of music, and last year I helped out a friend with some creative input for his album and I was grateful for his gracious thank you to me on the album liner notes. I'm pleased to say that Gabriel Mark Hasselbach won Album of the Year and Instrumentalist of the Year at the jazz music Wave Awards held in Toronto a couple of weeks ago. Congratulations Gabriel!
Great News for Macintosh OS X Users, we recently have added a Macintosh to our production computers and we have been testing our site and sounds on Macintosh. Since there isn't a Windows Media Player for the Macintosh, our listeners have been limited to only being able to listen to the live show in Real or archives using Real when they are using OS X. We have tested VLC and it plays back either the Live feed of Windows Media or the 24/7 Windows Media feed. We encourage you to support such excellent open source programs that function on both Macintosh and Windows based computers. Visit the VLC Project (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) and download your copy of their player for Windows, Linux, Mac and Unix.
The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing The Grass Roots in a performance from the Jimmy Durante Show (of all TV shows!). Check out Jimmy's introduction of the band. The quality is not the greatest, but certainly worth watching and hearing. The Grass Roots are on tour and will be in Toronto soon. Here they are with Let's Live For Today, our Song of the Week. Enjoy!
Voice Your Choice features Nancy Sinatra with Sugar Town and with Lee Hazlewood on Summer Wine. Which song would you like to hear? Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page. We'll play the winning song in the 3rd hour of next week's show.
Don't forget to check out the show, Live and Archive on your Smartphone. If you need an app, may I suggest www.wunderradio.com. They have a version for all types of smartphones, including Android and iPhone. It's fun to be able to listen on the go.
