August 4th to 17th, 2019
Hum along with me; we're on our way to the charts! Not a lyric in sight on this week's show, as it's the annual Instrumental Gems Wordless Wonders Special. It was so much fun to put together a 4 hour playlist of strictly instrumental hits. There was a time when it was commonplace to hear instrumental hits on the radio. As an example, you remember the hit Raunchy. Well, there were three different versions that were simultaneously in the Top Ten. The recording by Billy Vaughn reached Number 10; Ernie Fields peaked at Number 4, while the version I played by Bill Justis was the most popular version reaching to Number 2. Talk about a popular song! I had a request from Toni Howerton in Middletown, Ohio, to play the full version of my theme song, Quiet Village by Martin Denny, a huge top five hit in 1959. It was also cool to play and listen to other great hits such as Bumble Boogie, Apache, Stranger On The Shore, The Lonely Bull, Classical Gas, and so many more. Interestingly, instrumental hits seemed to be a bit shorter than songs with vocals and it enabled me to play even more music for you. If you missed what many listeners call their favourite special of the year, be sure to go to the Broadcast Partners Network page for the days and times when you can listen to this week's show on our Affiliate Radio Stations.I am taking a week off for vacation next week and there will be no live show. Is your birthday coming up soon? If it is, I'd like to help you celebrate it on the show. Send the month and date to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the air and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you.
