The Grass Roots - Voice Your Choice

The Grass Roots formed in Los Angeles, California, are one of the most under-rated groups in my opinion. Despite have many charted hits, including three Top Ten songs and one Gold record, they never seemed to be on the tip of people's tongues when talking about their favourite groups.

The members included Rob Grill on lead vocals and bass, Warren Entner and Creed Bratton on guitars, and Rick Coonce on drums. I always love their sound with nice crisp production and often with great horn arrangements to augment the sound.

Between 1965 and 1971 they appeared on the charts 24 times and had 3 Top Ten hits and a Gold Record. Out of all those hits, you get to vote for two of them as we feature The Grass Roots on Voice Your Choice. Cast you vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Where Were You When I Needed You or Temptation Eyes. I'll play the winner during next week's show.

Frank and Nancy Sinatra - Somethin' Stupid - Song of the Week

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, the Top 5 Countdown was from 1967, and the Number One song was the great father/daughter duet by Frank and Nancy Sinatra.

So here at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog, I'm pleased to play this great classic Number One hit from 1967. Here's Frank and Nancy Sinatra with Somethin' Stupid. It's our Song of the Week.

Enjoy!

This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of April 10th, 2016

April 10th to April 16th, 2016

I was so very pleased to pay tribute on this week's show to Malcolm Tomlinson. He was the first artist I signed to A&M Records. With great musicians in his band and in the studio, his two A&M albums are a treasure to me. In fact, I haven't had them for many years. As they were released before the CD era, neither album have been available for years. However, I was thrilled to find both vinyl albums available on eBay, so I scooped them up from a seller in Germany! I hope to receive them by the end of this week. I also paid tribute to the original Bass singer of The Belmonts, Chris Mastrangelo, who died this past week in Florida. It was really good to hear some of those Belmonts classic hits again. You'll find the song titles I played and the entire playlist for this week's show on the Listen page.

Please join me for the next special, Sunday, May 1st when we'll celebrate the 19th Anniversary of Treasure Island Oldies. Over the many years, the show has continued to grow and there are listeners all over the world, including the many radio AM, FM and Online stations that are part of the Broadcast Partners Network. It will be a fun time and I look forward to your company.

If your birthday is coming up soon, please be sure to let me know so that I can also celebrate your special day on the show. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I’ll wish you Happy Birthday during the show and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing the Number One song on this week's Top 5 Countdown from 1962. It's Shelly Fabares with Johnny Angel and it's our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Bobby Goldsboro - Voice Your Choice

Bobby Goldsboro is on the spotlight for Voice Your Choice on Treasure Island Oldies. He was born in Marianna, Florida on January 18, 1841 and moved to Dotham, Alabama in 1956.

He started out as a pop singer, songwriter and guitarist. He also added TV show host to his resume when he had his own syndicated show, The Bobby Goldsboro Show from 1972 to 1975.

Between December of 1962 to 1973 he appeared on the charts a total of 27 times, including two Top Ten hits, and a gold Records for Honey in 1968.

Be sure to cast you vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Little Things or See The Funny Little Clown. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

Shelly Fabares - Johnny Angel : Song of the Week

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, the Top 5 Countdown was from this week in 1962. TV shows and young recording stars seemed to go hand in hand back then. For example, Shelley Fabares and Paul Peterson were part of the cast, along with their TV dad, Carl Betz on the Donna Reed Show.

So here is the Number One song on the countdown by Shelley Fabares, Johnny Angel. It's our Song of the Week.

Enjoy!

This week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of April 3rd, 2016

March 3rd to April 9th, 2016

I must begin this week's update with some sad news. Malcolm Tomlinson, the first artist I signed to A&M Records when I was in charge of the Artist & Repertoire department, died April 2nd in Toronto. Here's the info from David Farrell and his FYI Newsletter: "A vocalist/songwriter/drummer long prominent on the Toronto scene. Tomlinson began his musical career in his native England in such bands as The Panthers, The Motivation, Gethsemane and The Penny Peeps, playing support slots for the likes of Jethro Tull, Fleetwood Mac and Cream. After moving to Toronto in 1969, he played with Milkwood, Syrinx and Rhinoceros, and joined Rick James’ Stone City Band in 1973. He recorded with Bearfoot, then formed The Malcolm Tomlinson Band, who released albums in 1977 and 1979 (Coming Outta Nowhere and Rock ‘N Roll Hermit respectively) on A&M Records. (he was signed by Michael Godin). In the ‘80s he was a member of local favourites The Cameo Blues Band, as well as gigging regularly with his own band." Please check out the Treasure Island Oldies Blog for Fiddler's Green, a song which features Papa John Creech on fiddle, from his debut album, Coming Outta Nowhere, produced by the legendary Jack Richardson (The Guess Who, Bob Seger, etc.). I am so glad I did those two albums with Malcolm and the great guitarist, Danny Marks, whom I'm so glad to still be in touch with after all these years. I loved Malcolm's voice and boy he could rock! RIP Malcolm and thank you.

What a blast we had on this week's annual One Hit Wonders Special and thanks very much for your requests and calls. The folks in the Chat Room were saying how surprising it was to hear so many hit records yet you never heard from the artists again. Our next special will be the 19th Anniversary celebration of Treasure Island Oldies and the party will be Live Sunday, May 1st.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Ineyda Velasquez in Homosasa, Florida. If your birthday is coming up, please be sure to let me know so that I can also celebrate your special day on the show. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I’ll wish you Happy Birthday during the show and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing the Number One song on this week's Top 5 Countdown from 1957. It's Perry Como with Round And Round and it's our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Voice Your Choice spotlights the great songwriter and recording artist, Don Gibson. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Blue Blue Day or Oh Lonesome Me. I’ll play the winner on next week’s show.

Don Gibson - Voice Your Choice

Don Gibson was born on April 3, 1928 in Shelby, North Carolina and became a very successful songwriter, singer and guitarist. This is amazing: he charted 82 hits on the Country charts between 1956 and 1976.

On the Hot 100 chart he scored 14 hits, including the Number One smash, Oh Lonesome Me. As a songwriter, many of his tunes were recorded by big name artists including Ray Charles (I Can't Stop Loving You); and Faron Young, Patsy Cline as well as Tommy McLain all had hits with Sweet Dreams.

Treasure Island Oldies presents Don Gibson in the Voice Your Choice spotlight. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Blue Blue Day or Oh Lonesome Me. I'll play the winner during next week's show.

Perry Como Round And Round - Song of the Week

This week's Top 5 Countdown on Treasure Island Oldies was from 1957. And here's the Number One song this week from 1957. It's Perry Como with Round And Round. It's our Song of the week.

Malcolm Tomlinson, my first artist signing to A&M Records, has passed away at age 69

As I said in this week's Island Update, I was saddened to learn of the passing of Malcolm Tomlinson, the first artist I signed to A&M Records not long long after I joined the label back in late 1975. We did two albums with Malcolm, his debut LP Coming Outta Nowhere, produced by Jack Richardson (Bob Seger, The Guess Who, Poco, etc.), and Rock and Roll Hermit, produced by John Anthony (Ace, Queen, Genesis, Roxy Music, etc.).

As a tribute to Malcolm, here are two music clips, with song cool photos. The first is a song from Coming Outta Nowhere. Fiddler's Green featured Papa John Creech on fiddle and Danny Marks on Guitar.

The second song is from years later when he played with the Cameo Blues Band. His voice shines on this.

It was a great experience working with Malcolm Tomlinson and I am very proud to have signed him to A&M Records.

Thanks, Malcolm. RIP
