This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of February 23rd 2020

February 23rd to 29th, 2020

Some consider 1967 to be a pivotal year for music. It was a year that featured pop, rock, folk, psychedelic songs, and even protest songs. That about covers the gamut in music styles; and this week's show reflected that diversity throughout the show. From 60s pop of The Seekers, to the soul of Sam & Dave, to the rocking Detroit sound of Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels, to the country sound of Roger Miller, the folk music of Simon & Garfunkel, as well as the psychedelic sound of Sagittarius, the show was packed with variety. Check out every song I played this week by going to the Listen page and scrolling down to the Playlist.

Hey Marianne, Bill, Ruby, Sue, Billy, and  Jim, you could hear your name on the show. You could when you listen to  The Name Game Special, coming up Sunday, March 15th. Listen and you just may hear your name  in a song title. It's a fun show named after the fun song by Shirley Ellis.

Happy Birthday wishes go out this week to Linda Russell Johnson in West Plains, Missouri. If your birthday is coming up soon, I'd like to help you celebrate your birthday with all the show's listeners. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the air and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you. By the way, Happy Leap Year to all whose birthday falls this week on February 29th.

Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice features jazzier side of Canada's rockers, Bachman Turner Overdrive.  Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Looking Out For #1 or Blue Collar. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

The Top Five Countdown is from 1967, our Spotlight Year on the show this week. The Number One song is by The Buckinghams. The first time I heard it on the radio, I thought they were singing Canada Dy. They weren't. LOL  Kind Of A  Drag is playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

Have a good week.

Bye for now.

Bachman Turner Overdrive Voice Your Choice Treasure Island Oldies

Bachman Turner Overdrive, or BTO as they quickly became known, formed in Vancouver, British Columbia but were from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Randy Bachman had been a founding member of The Guess Who with Chad Allan. Between the time Randy quit The Guess Who and formed BTO, he had another group called Brave Belt with Chad Allen once again on lead vocals.

When Randy Bachman and his brother Robbie Bachman teamed up with Fred Turner and Blair Thornton, a new page in Randy's illustrious history was about to begin. These hard rockers went on to chart 12 times between 1973 and 1979, including a Number One Gold Record.

Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice presents the jazzier side of Bachman Turner Overdrive. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Looking Out For #1 or Blue Collar. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

The Buckinghams Number One 1967 Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, the Spotlight Year is 1967. Perched at the top of the stack of the best 100 songs, The Buckinghams are Number One.

I remember the first time I heard this song on the radio. I thought it was a commercial for Canada Dry, as that's what it sounded to me that they were singing. LOL

Here at Number One are The Buckinghams, with Kind Of A Drag.

Enjoy!

Have you ever wanted to be on the radio? Well you can be, in name that is! Hear your name on The Name Game Special, coming up Sunday, March 15th. Listen and you just may hear your name  in a song title. It's a fun show named in honour of Shirley Ellis.

The Bee Gees Voice Your Choice Treasure Island Oldies

The Bee Gees, brothers Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb, were born on the Isle of Man and grew up in Manchester, England. They even had their own skiffle/rock group, the Rattlesnakes in the '50s. At the end of the fifties, the family moved from England to Queensland, Australia. The brothers began recording and eventually had a hit in Australia with their twelfth single release, Spicks and Specks.

They returned to England in 1967 and hooked up with producer/promoter/manager Robert Stigwood who brought them to worldwide fame. The Bee Gees became the third most successful band in Billboard Magazine's chart history, right after The Beatles and The Supremes.

Treasure Island Oldies presents The Bee Gees in the Voice Your Choice spotlight. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either I've Gotta Get A Message To You or Words. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

Sly and The Family Stone Number One 1970 Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown

Sly and The Family Stone continued their influence on the R&B, Funk and Soul music with this week's Number One song.

The song title had a very fun play on words. What should have been Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself Again was cleverly turned into Thank You (Falletinme Be Mice Elf Agin).

And it's the Number One song this week on the Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown.

Enjoy!

The Contours were one of the earliest groups signed to Berry Gordy's Motown Records. Originally called the Blenders, they changed their name to The Contours in 1960 just prior to an audition for Berry Gordy.

Despite several member changes, they managed to have several songs hit the R&B and Pop charts. However none ever reached the popularity of one of this week's Voice Your Choice songs.

Treasure Island Oldies presents The Contours on Voice Your Choice. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Do You Love Me or Just A Little Misunderstanding. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

This Week on Treasure Island Oldies Week of February 2 2020

February 2nd to 8th, 2020
It sure was a busy week on the show. The Spotlight Year was 1969, including the Top Five Countdown. I also was pleased to do a musical tribute to The Kingston Trio, in honour of the passing of founding original member Bob Shane, who died last week at age 85. Also in tribute to The Day The Music Died, I devoted the entire 4th hour to Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. It included news bulletins, interviews and tribute songs by other recording artists, as well as the great music of Buddy, Ritchie and the Bog Bopper. For a complete list of every song I played during the four hours we had together, go to the Listen page and scroll down to the Playlist.

Next week on the show, it's the annual Love Fest, the Valentine's Day Special. The four hours will be filled with songs with one common theme: love. I look forward to your company.

If your birthday is coming up soon, I'd like to help you celebrate your birthday with all the show's listeners. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the air and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

I wanted to take a moment to send my most sincere condolences to Mike Dillon in 100 Mile House, British Columbia on the passing of his sweetheart, Heather Mary Dillon. I've known them both for many years and have had the pleasure of visiting with them. Heather visited the Chat Room on many occasions using Fawn as her nickname. Fawn Lake was a place she loved, right near 100 Mile House. All of the folks in the chat room share in the sadness. We'll miss Heather. And we're all thinking of Mike as this most difficult time.

Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice features Jackie DeShanon with two of her love songs for your votes. She continued singing and caught the attention of Liberty Records in 1960 and released several records that were mostly regional hits.

Two of her earliest hits were Needles and Pins and and a song she wrote, When You Walk In The Room. Both became hits for The Searchers during the British Music Invasion of the '60s.
