This Week On The Island

July 28th to August 4th, 2019

Some of my favourite songs seemed to have been released in 1966. I was turning 14 that year and the Summer of '66 for me was the best year for great music. And this week on Treasure Island Oldies, the Spotlight Year is 1966. Man oh man, so many great records! Cool Jerk, Knock On Wood, Stop Stop Stop, I Fought The Law, Eleanor Rigby, Sunny, Summer In The City...and the hits just kept on coming! I was also pleased to play as many requests as possible, including When A Man Loves A Woman, Along Comes Mary and I'm Your Puppet. For the complete list of songs I played, in order,  throughout the four hours, go to the Listen page and scroll down to the Playlist.

Be sure to listen in to next week's show. It's the highly popular and annual Instrumental Gems Wordless Wonders Special. For so many years, it was quite ordinary to hear instrumental hits on the radio. Songs like Theme from A Summer Place, Walk Don't Run, Love Is Blue are just a few examples of songs you'd hear. It's rare to hear any instrumental hits these days. Once a year I assemble a great collection of instrumental hits from the '50s, '60s, and '70s. And I'll play some of the best for you on the Instrumental Gems Wordless Wonders Special LIVE next Sunday beginning at 6 pm Pacific, 9 pm Eastern. Be sure to listen to what many listeners have told me throughout the years is their favourite show of the year.

Is your birthday coming up soon? If it is, I'd like to help you celebrate it on the show. Send the month and date to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the air and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

Voice Your Choice spotlights Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass, one of the most successful instrumental artists ever. I had the great pleasure of knowing Herb when I worked for A&M Records, the highly successful recorded label he started with Jerry Moss.  Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either The Lonely Bull or A Taste Of Honey. I'll play the winner during next week's Instrumental Gems Wordless Wonder Special.

This week the Top Five Countdown is from 1966. The Number One song is by The Troggs, their debut single in fact.  Wild Thing is playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

See you next week on The Island for the Instrumental Gems Wordless Wonders Special!

Bye for now.

Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass - Voice Your Choice Treasure Island Oldies

Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass were a mainstay on the charts from their first single, The Lonely Bull, in 1962 through to Making Love In The Rain, their final single in 1987. Herb Alpert had been playing trumpet since he was eight years old. He got into the music business and joined the A&R (Artist and Repertoire) department at Keen Records, produced the first Jan And Dean recording session, and even wrote Wonderful World for Sam Cooke. He first recorded under the name Dore Alpert and then formed A&M Records, with partner Jerry Moss in 1962.

I had the pleasure of working for A&M Records from 1975 to 1986, also in the A&R Department, and I eventually became Vice-President. In 1978 I discovered Bryan Adams and signed him to A&M. Both Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss were gentlemen and I enjoyed working with them very much.

Incidentally, Herb is the only artist of the rock and roll era to have both a #1 Instrumental record and #1 Vocal record (Rise in 1979 and This Guy's In Love With You in 1968). For the first record in 1962, Herb used the Wrecking Crew studio musicians for the Tijuana Brass recording sessions, then in 1965 he formed his own band. During a very successful run between 1962 and 1987, there were forty songs that hit the charts, including nine in the Top Twenty and two Gold Records.

This week as we present the annual Instrumental Gems Wordless Wonders Special on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice features a very fitting artist: Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either The Lonely Bull or A Taste Of Honey. I'll play the winner on next week's Instrumental Gems Wordless Wonders Special.

The Troggs - Number One Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown 1966

Imagine having your debut single head straight to the top of the charts. That's what happened for The Troggs, a group produced and managed by Larry Page, who was also the manager of The Kinks. I worked with Larry Page during my years at A&M Records when I was the head of the A&R Department. We distributed his record label, Page One Records. I did a remix of Erotic Soul by the Larry Page Orchestra and it became the first ever commercially released 12 inch dance club extended mix record.

The Troggs had many additional hits, including With A Good Like You, I Can't Control Myself, and the huge hit, Love Is All Around.

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, the Spotlight Year is 1966. Reigning over the Hot 100 at Number One are The Troggs and Wild Thing!

Barbara Lewis - Voice Your Choice Treasure Island Oldies

Barbara Lewis was born February 9, 1943 in Salem, Michigan, near Ann Arbor. She was discovered by Ollie McLaughlin, a Detroit radio DJ. Her debut single, My Heart Went Do Dat Da, was only a regional hit in the Detroit area. However, in non-typical fashion for the time, she wrote every song on her debut album, including Hello Stranger.

Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice features Barbara Lewis. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Baby I'm Yours or Make Me Your Baby. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of July 21st, 2019

July 21st to July 27th, 2019

We had a double theme to this week's show. First, our Spotlight Year was 1971. In addition, we commemorated the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing in 1969 by playing some very Lunar Tunes. I had such fun playing Moondance, Come Fly With Me, Mr. Moonlight, Mr. Spaceman, Moonlight Feels Right, Everyone's Gone To The Moon, Dancing In The Moonlight, and so many more great Moon Tunes. For the complete list of all songs I played during this week's show, go to the Listen page and scroll down to the Playlist.

We're getting closer and closer to the next special. It's the annual Instrumental Gems Wordless Wonders special, Live, Sunday August 4. This special will highlight some of the best Instrumental Gems ever.

Voice Your Choice spotlights R&B singer, Barbara Lewis. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Baby I'm Yours or Make Me Your Baby. I'll play the winner during next week's show.

This week the Top Five Countdown is from 1971. The Number One song is by The Raiders, and it became the biggest selling 45 for Columbia Records for nearly a decade! Indian Reservation (The Lament Of The Cherokee Reservation Indian) is playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

The Raiders - Number One Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown 1971

Paul Revere and The Raiders were a very popular American pop rock group who garnered many hits from the mid-'6os into the '70s. They were originally from Boise, Idaho, but relocated to Portland, Oregon when Paul Revere returned from serving in the US Armed Forces. I bet you saw them often on the afternoon TV music show, Where The Action Is.

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, the Top Five Countdown is from this week's Spotlight Year, 1962. Sitting at the top of the chart is a song that would become the biggest selling 45 for Columbia Records for almost a decade.

Here are The Raiders with Indian Reservation (The Lament Of The Cherokee Reservation Indian), this week's Number One song.

Enjoy!

Sergio Mendes & Brazil '66 - Voice Your Choice Treasure Island Oldies

Sergio Mendes was born in Brazil on February 11, 1941. Although he recorded jazz albums with Atlantic and Capitol Records, it wasn't until it was suggested that he and his group sing in English that his career really took off. One of the two female vocalists in the group was Lani Hall, who would later marry A&M Records co-founder, Herb Alpert. Interestingly as well, Sergio Mendes are far better known in the United States than in his native Brazil.

They had many hits on both the Top 40 and Adult Contemporary charts, including the two songs we are featuring. Treasure Island Oldies presents Sergio Mendes & Brazil '66 in the Voice Your Choice spotlight.

Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Fool On The Hill or Mas Que Nada. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

Fundraising for my friend and listener, Tim Sykes

Jill and Tim Sykes are long time friends and listeners of my Treasure Island Oldies show. In fact, they met via the Treasure Island Oldies Chat Room. Jill was in the United States and Tim was in Canada. They continued to become friends in the chat room and eventually met and are happily married today.

Unfortunately, Tim had to undergo emergency surgery a short while ago and requires continued home healthcare nurses and medical supplies. These medical supplies are very expensive and not in their small budget.

A good friend of Tim's from the Hot Rodding community, Dennis Dale, has started a Go Fund Me page to help raise money to help Jill and Tim cope with the very high cost of Tim's medical supplies.

Please do you best to pass this on and to help.

Thanks very much.

Canada Day Celebrations on Treasure Island Oldies

June 30th to July 6th, 2019
Happy Canada Day! Thanks for joining me for my annual Music of Canada Special. Having spent most of my career in radio as Dj and Music Director, and then as Vice-President of A&R (Artist & Repertoire) with A&M Records, I have been a staunch supporter of music written, performed and produced by Canadians. This special is my opportunity to showcase some of the great music that achieved regional, national and international success. It was also great to share with you some of the perhaps surprising inventions made by Canadians. Basketball, hockey, AM Radio (Amplitude Modulation), the cardiac pacemaker, peanut butter, and even the egg carton are among the many inventions the world has benefited from using or playing. And what a treat it was for me to share some of the music by several of the artists I signed to A&M Records, including Bryan Adams, The Payola$, Eddie Schwartz and others. Time did not permit me to showcase every artist I signed and nurtured. If you missed any or all of the show, or if you would like to listen to the Music of Canada special again, just go to the Broadcast Partners Network page for the days and times when our Affiliate Stations will be playing this week's show. There's so much talent in Canada, and I am proud to share their music with you.
The next special is about a month away. It's the annual Instrumental Gems Wordless Wonders special, Live, Sunday August 4. There was a time when instrumental records became hits and not unusual to hear many on the radio. This special highlights some of the best Instrumental Gems over the four hour show. Be sure to listen to what many listeners have told me is their favourite show of the year.

If your birthday is coming up soon, I'd like to help you celebrate it on the show. Send the month and date to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the air and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

Voice Your Choice spotlights Steve Lawrence. He recorded and performed with his wife, Eydie Gorme, on many records. However we are featuring his solo work. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Footsteps or Pretty Blue Eyes. I'll play the winner during next week's show.

This week the Top Five Countdown is from 1967. The Number One song is by The Association. Windy is playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

In closing, I'd like to wish my American friends and listeners a Happy Independence Day.
