The Essex had an interesting way of becoming a singing group.
They met when they were all members of the U.S. Marine Corps based at
Camp LeJeune, North Carolina. While only three are shown in the photo,
there were in fact five members: the terrific lead vocalist Anita Humes, and Walter Vickers, Rodney Taylor, Billy Hill, and Rudolph Johnson. Their debut single reached the mighty Number One spot on the charts, quite a feat. Sadly, lead singer Anita Humes, passed away May 30, 2010.
This week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice features The Essex with two of their charted hit songs. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either A Walkin' Miracle or Easier Said Than Done. I'll play the winner in the 3rd hour of next week's show.
