This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of February 23rd, 2014

February 23rd, 2014 to March 1st, 2014

I should have played Let It Snow Let It Snow Let It Snow on the show this week. An unlikely event took place over the weekend: it snowed in Vancouver! This is the first time this year and only the second time since November that we have had any snow on the West Coast of Canada. While it’s visually interesting to look at, it’s still a rare occurrence to happen here. Hopefully it will all be melted away by next week’s show. J In the meantime, all the hot songs on this week’s playlist didn’t prevent the snow storm. LOL If you missed the live show, be sure to listen to the Archive and also to check out the Playlist. I always list every song and artist played on the show every week. It’s all at the Listen page.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to long time listener and recent Chat Room regular, Linda Johnson in West Plains, Missouri, and to George Mooth in Edwardsburg, Michigan. And if you have a birthday approaching, be sure to let me know so that I can play Birthday by The Beatles for you. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com.

Mark your calendar for Sunday, March 16th. That’s when our next special will take place, the Annual Name Game Special. Every song played will feature someone’s name in the song title. It’s always a popular special and I know you’ll enjoy it.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing The O’Kaysions with their Top 5 hit, Girl Watcher. It’s our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Voice Your Choice spotlights one of the early Girl Groups, The Essex. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either A Walkin’ Miracle or Easier Said Than Done. I’ll play the winner in the 3rd hour of next week’s show.

Here’s the Rock and Roll News for the week of February 23rd.

Listen to the Top 5 Countdown from 1960.

Well that’s about all for this week. I’m heading off into the snow!

See you next week for another Treasure Island Oldies show.

Bye for now.

The Essex - Voice Your Choice

The Essex had an interesting way of becoming a singing group. They met when they were all members of the U.S. Marine Corps based at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina. While only three are shown in the photo, there were in fact five members: the terrific lead vocalist Anita Humes, and Walter Vickers, Rodney Taylor, Billy Hill, and Rudolph Johnson. Their debut single reached the mighty Number One spot on the charts, quite a feat. Sadly, lead singer Anita Humes, passed away May 30, 2010.

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice features The Essex with two of their charted hit songs. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either A Walkin' Miracle or Easier Said Than Done. I'll play the winner in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

The O'Kaysions - Song of the Week

The O'Kaysions hailed from Wilson, North Carolina and scored a smash Top 5 hit with Girl Watcher. I wanted to play it for you this week, not only because I featured it on this week's show, but also because I had previously assumed it was an R&B group. Surprisingly, they were not a Black R&B group.

Here are The O'Kaysions with Girl Watcher, Top 5 from 1968. It's our Song of the Week.

Enjoy!

This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of February 16th, 2014

February 16th, 2014 to February 22nd, 2014

It sure was great to hear The Beatles 2nd appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show from the Deauville Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida, from February 26, 1964. And it was another record breaking audience that watched the Fab Four on TV. I am so glad that I was around during their heyday and the era in general. It was an exciting time and a period of so many firsts. And the memories it brought back were great for me and for you I am sure. And that’s exactly why I love bring you Treasure Island Oldies every week. It’s not just about playing a bunch of old records, it’s what that timeless music evokes in your own memories. So I thank you for being part of the audience every week; I know you enjoy the show, the great music and the memories. By the way, the Chat Room is a really good way to share some of those memories when you hear a particular song. Recent visitors have now become weekly regulars. And I am sure you will as well. Click Chat on any page of the website during the live show on Sunday nights; follow the instructions, and you’ll be part of the chat room or the Nuts in the Hut.

If you have a birthday coming up, be sure to let me know so that I can wish you Happy Birthday on the show and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you in celebration of your special day. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com.

Our next monthly special will occur on Sunday, March 16 with the Annual Name Game Special. Every song will have the name of a person in the song title. It makes for a fun and lively special and I know you will enjoy it again this year.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing Jay and The Americans in a performance from the TV show Shindig of Cara Mia. It’s our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Voice Your Choice presents Little Miss Dynamite, Brenda Lee. Cast your vote for either Too Many Rivers or Coming On Strong. I’ll play the winner in the 3rd hour of next week’s show.

Here’s the Rock and Roll News for the week of February 16th.

Listen to the Top 5 Countdown from 1969.

Well that’s about all for this week. Take care and I’ll see you next week for another Treasure Island Oldies show.

Bye for now.

Brenda Lee - Voice Your Choice

Brenda Lee, "Little Miss Dynamite", began her professional singing career at age six. She was born Brenda Mae Tarpley on December 11, 1944 in Lithonia, Georgia. When she was just twelve years old, she signed with Decca Records in 1956. Between 1957 and 1973, she had 55 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. She became the #1 female singer of the 1960s. What a career and what and entertainer!

Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice spotlights Brenda Lee. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Too Many Rivers or Coming On Strong. I'll play the winner in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

Jay And The Americans - Song Of The Week

Jay Black replaced Jay Traynor as the lead singer in Jay and The Americans after the group's first single. And what a voice he had too! Check out this performance from the TV show Shindig with Jay and The Americans and Cara Mia. It's our Song of the Week.

Enjoy!
