This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of April 27th, 2014

April 27th, 2014 to May 3rd, 2014

Technology got in the way during the 4th hour of this week’s Live show, preventing the balance of the hour going out. Please accept my apologies for the inconvenience. There was a “blip” in the feed between the studio and the network that could not be re-established. The good news is that it did NOT affect the Archive. So if you’re pining to hear the last hour of the show, the complete four hours is now available at the Listen page. Thanks again for your understanding.

A quick reminder that next week on the show we’ll be celebrating the 17th Anniversary of Treasure Island Oldies. Many of the listeners have been loyal almost from the first show way back in 1997. If you’d like to send an anniversary greeting, please do so by sending an email tomichael@treasureislandoldies.com or you can call the Listener Line at 206-339-0709 and record your message. I’ll read your email note and play back your recorded message on the show. It’ll be a fun party!

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Marc Baillergeon in Edmonton, Alberta, and to our very own Webmaster, Eddy Fisher! If your birthday is coming up soon, let me know by sending the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. It will be my pleasure to wish you Happy Birthday on the show and play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of April 20th, 2014

April 20th, 2014 to April 26th, 2014

Happy Easter, Happy Passover, Happy Vaisakhi, Happy Spring! I hope you are enjoying the beginning of Spring where you live. All the flowers and trees are in bloom in Vancouver here on the West Coast and it sure is beautiful. It’s a great time of the year. And it was a great time again this week on Treasure Island Oldies. It was fun to recognize Record Store Day, as vinyl is now “in”. As I mentioned on the show, I saw an ad on TV the other day for Grand Marnier Liqueur that showed an upscale party going on and the glue that held the event together was the music playing from vinyl on the turntable. Very cool. And I really enjoyed digging out a vinyl record from the 1950s that was an in-store demonstration record for a line of budget records by Coronet Records. I played two ads each hour and the feedback from the chat room was ‘where can I get an orthophonic album for $1.49!’ What good fun. I’ve had that record since I was a kid and finally found a way to incorporate it into the show; and what a great fit it was for Record Store Day.

I’d like to remind you to be sure to join me for the 17th Anniversary of Treasure Island Oldies, coming up Live, Sunday, May 4th from 6 to 10 pm, Pacific. If you’d like to call the Listener Line at 206-339-0709 to record you Anniversary greeting, that would be great. Alternatively, you can also email a note to me at michael@treasureislandoldies.com. I’ll do my best to play back as many of your messages and notes as I possibly can during the show.

If you have a birthday coming up soon, please be sure to let me know. I’d love to wish you Happy Birthday on the show on behalf of all the listeners around the world and play Birthday by The Beatles for you as well. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing a great live performance by The Doors with Light My Fire. It’s our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Voice Your Choice spotlights “Mr. Entertainment”, Jackie Wilson. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Lonely Teardrops or Whispers (Getting’Louder). I’ll play the winner in the 3rd hour of next week’s show.

Jackie Wilson - Voice Your Choice

Jackie Wilson was born June 9, 1934 in Detroit, Michigan. He's been referred to as one of the all-time great entertainers and "Mr. Excitement". Prior to turning to music, he was an amateur boxer. Becoming a singer, he eventually joined Billy Ward and His Dominoes as a replacement for lead singer, Clyde McPhatter, who went on to a solo career. Jackie also became a solo artist in 1957, the same year he had his first hit record, Reet Petite (The Finest Girl You Ever Want To Meet) and was produced by Berry Gordy Jr., who eventually went on to found Motown Records.

Jackie appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 charts a total of 62 times between 1957 and 1972, scoring 6 Top Ten hits. He collapsed on stage after suffering a stroke at the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill, New Jersey on September 29, 1975. Sadly he lived the rest of his life in nursing homes prior to his passing January 21, 1974 at the very young age of 49.

Treasure Island Oldies is pleased to feature Jackie Wilson on Voice Your Choice. Cast your vote for either Lonely Teardrops  or Whispers (Gettin' Louder). I'll play the winner in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

The Doors - Song of the Week

I played Jose Feliciano's version of Light My Fire in the first hour of the show and then played the original by The Doors to lead off the 2nd hour of the week's Treasure Island Oldies show. So I thought I'd play their signature hit song for you here at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

Here are The Doors with a great live performance of Light My Fire. It's our Song of the Week.

Enjoy!

I’m pleased to bring back for an encore presentation the popular feature Hits From Across The Pond with Fay Greenwood, who tells the background story to a song that scored the big time in the United Kingdom and then you get to hear it.  It originally aired starting in 2009 and sounds great all over again. Be sure to listen to this repeat presentation during the 4th hour every week.
