This Week On Treasure Island Oldies

March 25th, 2012 to March 31st, 2012

We had another fun show again this week with lots of comments from listeners about the music. Many indicated they had not heard some songs in years. It's always my pleasure to play great music on the show for you. I received remarks from folks about playing You Met Your Match by Stevie Wonder, one hardly heard anymore. Someone else commented how great is was to hear Bobby Womack's Lookin' For A Love, one of my R&B favourites too. Another song that generated talk in the Chat Room was Machine Gun by The Commodores, their debut single and one of the infrequent instrumentals from Motown. If you have a song you'd like to hear on the show or have some thoughts you'd like to share about a song you heard, let me know. Call or Click. The Listener Line is available for your calls 24/7 at 206-339-0709. And you can Click the Requests Button on any page of the website.

And be sure to make you calendar for our next special, the Annual One Hit Wonders Special, the week of April 8th. Not so surprisingly, there were a ton of artists and groups who only scored one hit on the Billboard Top 100 charts. We'll play many of them throughout the four hours. This is one of the most enjoyed specials of the year; I hope you'll join me.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to long time listener and Chat Room regular, Rich Howe in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Best wishes also go out to Tom Locke, the creator and writer of our weekly feature, Moment In Time. Last but certainly not least, Red Robinson, the pioneer disc jockey and member of many Halls of Fame including the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, is also having a birthday. My best wishes to you all. If you have a birthday coming up, be sure to let me know. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com and I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the show and play Birthday, our official birthday song by The Beatles, for you.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing the Box Tops with their Gold record Cry Like A Baby. It's our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Voice Your Choice features another group from the British Invasion era, The Searchers, with two of their hits for your votes: Don't Throw Your Love Away and Needles And Pins. Which song would you like me to play? Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page and we'll play the winning song in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

I've had several listeners let me know how pleased they are to be able to listen to the show while they are on the go via their smartphones by using the Tune In Radio app. You can listen to the latest show, the Rock & Roll News Podcasts, and the live show as well. Get more out of your iPhone or other smartphone with the Tune In Radio app, available at iTunes.

Speaking of the Rock & Roll News, I am pleased and honoured that the podcast of this weekly feature is now among the Top 1000 Podcasts in the world! Thank You!

Hope you have a great week. See you on next week's show.

Bye for now.

The Searchers - Voice Your Choice

The Beatles came from Liverpool, England. The Searchers also called it home as well.

This rock and roll band included Mike Pender (lead vocals and guitar), John McNally (vocals and guitar), b (vocals and bass), and Chris Curtis (drums).

They hit the charts in North America six times before the scored their biggest hit, the cover of The Clovers' smash, Love Potion Number Nine. However, their other hits were not shabby at all and this week we spotlight two of them for your votes.

Would you like to hear Don't Throw Your Love Away or Needles And Pins? Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page. We'll play the winning song in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

Box Tops - Song Of The Week

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing The Box Tops featuring the late Alex Chilton.

This time round we're playing Cry Like A Baby and it's our Song of the Week.

This Week On Treasue Island Oldies

March 18, 2012 to March 24, 2012

Hi and welcome to this week's update. What a blast we had on our Annual Name Game Special. It's always surprising to me just how many hits there were in the 50s, 60s and 70s with people's names in the song titles. And it becomes extremely evident when we have our annual special. I'd like to thank you for the many suggestions as well as requests I received. I always enjoy hearing from you. And it was great to play some Lost Treasures as well, including A Symphony For Susan by The Arbors, Virginia (Touch Me Like You Do) by Bill Amesbury, Kathy Linden's Goodbye Jimmy Goodbye, Patti Ann by Johnny Crawford, who played the role of Mark McCain on the TV series The Rifleman. It's always a treat to dig up these rarely played oldies for you to enjoy.

The Treasure Island Oldies Blog is keeping our Name Game Special theme going with Ricky Nelson and Hello Mary Lou. It's our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Voice Your Choice presents one of the early Girl Groups, The Shirelles, with two of their big hits: Baby It's You and Foolish Little Girl. Cast your vote for the song you'd like to hear at the Voice Your Choice page. We'll play the winning song in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Joel Drucker in Randolph, New Jersey, and to long-time friend, listener and weekly contributor to the show with his Rock & Roll Relic, Rick Canode in Madison, Wisconsin. All the best to you both. If you have a birthday coming up, be sure to let me know. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com and I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the show and play Birthday, our official birthday song by The Beatles, for you.

Mark your calendar for our next special, the highly popular One Hit Wonders Special, the Week of April 8th. Despite a slew of artists who had multiple hits in their career, there are still many artists and groups whose good fortune only shone on them one time with one hit record. And we'll play many of them for your enjoyment. Be sure to let me know if there's a particular One Hit Wonder you'd like me to play. Call or Click with your requests. Call the Treasure Island Oldies Listener Line 24/7 at 206-339-0709 or Click the Requests Button on any page of the website.

Have a great week.

Bye for now.

The Shirelles - Voice Your Choice

The Shirelles were the most successful "Girl Group" of the Rock and Roll era!

Shirley Alston, Beverly Lee, Doris Kenner and Addie Harris met in junior high school and formed The Poquellos and were classmates of Joey Dee. During their tremedously successful career on Scepter Records, they charted 26 songs on the charts, five Top Ten hits with two of them reaching #1 and also achieved Gold Record status for one of them. Their songs were also recorded by other artists including The Beatles (Boys) and The Mamas and The Papas (Dedicated To The One I Love).

The Shirelles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.

This week Treasure Island Oldies features two songs by The Shirelles on Voice Your Choice for you to cast your vote: Baby It's You OR Foolish Little Girl.

I imagine it'll be a nail biter this week wondering which song will be the winner. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page. I'll play the winning song in the 3rd hour of next week's show.

Ricky Nelson - Song Of The Week

In keeping with this week's Name Game Special on Treasure Island Oldies, here on the Blog we're playing Ricky Nelson with one of his many hit songs, Hello Mary Lou.

It's our Song of the Week.

Enjoy!

This Week On Treasure Island Oldies

March 5th, 2012, to March 10th, 2012

Thank you for your many requests for songs by The Monkees, in tribute to Davy Jones who died this past week. To me the best way top pay tribute to an artist is to play the music they are loved for the world over. That's why I very much enjoyed playing so many of their songs. Hearing many, for the first time in too many years to mention, was just fantastic. Look Out Here Comes Tomorrow, I Wanna Be Free, and Shades Of Grey sounded so good all over again!

Speaking of The Monkees, the Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing one of my favourites: Look Out Here Comes Tomorrow. It's a great clip from their TV show and our Song of the Week. Enjoy!

Voice Your Choice presents the daughter of the "Chairman of the Board". Nancy Sinatra had many hits and this week we give you two of them for your votes: How Does That Grab You Darlin' and These Boots Are Made For Walking. Cast your vote forthe song you'd like to hear at the Voice Your Choice page.

Happy Birthday wishes go out this week to singer/songwriter and recording artist, Paul Evans in New York City, Russ Horton from D-Moos.com in Georgetown, Ontario, and long time listener and one of the Nuts in the Hut in the Chat Room, Roy Geldart in Campbell River, British Columbia. If you have a birthday coming up, be sure to let me know by sending the details of your special day to birthdays@treasureislandoldiess.com. I'll be pleased to wish you Happy Birthday on the show and play Birthday by The Beatles.

Some listeners were having some problems getting through on the Treasure Island Oldies Listener Line. For some reason, my message disappeared and there was no greeting from me to you. It's all been fixed and working fine once again. Give me a call with your requests 24/7 at 206-339-0709.

Mark your calendars for our next special in two weeks. It's our annual Name Game Special the week of March 18th. Every song will have someone's name in the title. This is always a popular theme and I look forward to bringing this year's version to you.

Please note that due to my very busy schedule over the next couple of weeks, there may not be time for an update next week. I'll have to see how it goes. If not, see you in two weeks for the Name Game Special.

Have a good week.

Bye for now.

Nancy Sinatra - Voice Your Choice

Nancy Sinatra was born June 8, 1940 in Jersey City, New Jersey, but grew up in Los Angeles when her family moved there as a child. She was the first child of Nancy and Frank Sinatra. In 1959 when she was only 19, she made her national TV debut with her dad, Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley.

The first half of the sixties, she was married to singer and actor Tommy Sands, and even had her own television specials in the mid-1960s, as well as appearing on American Bandstand and Hullabaloo. She eventually acted in movies, including Speedway with Elvis Presley.

On Voice Your Choice this week, Treasure Island Oldies presents Nancy Sinatra with How Does That Grab You Darlin' and These Boots Are Made For Walking.. Which song would you like to hear? Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page.

The Monkees - Song Of The Week

This week on the Treasure Island Oldies Show and Blog we're paying tribute to Davy Jones who died this past week at age 66.

Here is one of The Monkees best songs, in my opinion, yet was was not actually a single. I really love this infectious record.

Here are The Monkees with Davy Jones on lead vocals with Look Out Here Comes Tomorrow. It's Our Song Of The Week.

Enjoy!
