Week of April 23rd, 2017 to April 29th, 2017

It was a wonderful four hours with you again this week on Treasure Island Oldies; thanks for listening. It was a pleasure to have a busy chat room again this week, with everything working perfectly and everyone having a great time together. With some of the recent technical adjustments in the studio, the comments coming back are that the show has better sound than ever. Thanks very much. My webmaster, Eddy Fisher, and I take great pride in having the website and studio equipment operating at peak performance. So your feedback is much appreciated.

We're just two weeks away from celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Treasure Island Oldies and with a big party Sunday, May 7th. We began back in 1997 of May 4th and have never looked back. I hope you can join me for the party and if you care to, send an email to me and I'll read your greeting on the air. The address is michael@treasureislandoldies.com

Do you have a birthday coming up? I'd like to help celebrate your special day by wishing you Happy Birthday on the air and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com

The Top Five Countdown on this week's show is from 1960. And the Number One song is the first release by Elvis Presley after he left the U.S. Army. Stuck On You is playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog. Enjoy!

Canada's Paul Anka is in the spotlight next week for Voice Your Choice on Treasure Island Oldies. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Lonely Boy or It's Time To Cry. I'll play the winning song on next week's show.

Paul Anka - Voice Your Choice

Paul Anka was born in Ottawa, the capital of Canada, on July 30, 1941 and began performing at age 12. His first label was RPM Records, for which he recorded a song called I Confess. That recording session in 1956 was financed by his father. Unfortunately, nothing happened. However, one year later he signed with ABC-Paramount and his career exploded.

His first single for ABC-Paramount, Diana, went all the way to Number One and became a Gold record. He achieved an impressive 53 songs on the Billboard chart with eleven in the Top Ten and three Gold records.

On Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice spotlights Paul Anka. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Lonely Boy or It's Time To Cry. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

Elvis Presley - Number One Song on Top Five Countdown from 1960

There was a lot of anticipation of what Elvis would do when he was released from the US Army. His fist post-Army single shot to the top of the charts and this week on Treasure Island Oldies,. the Top 5 Countdown is from 1960.

The Number One song is by Elvis with Stuck On You. Here's Elvis in a clip from the Frank Sinatra "Welcome Home, Elvis" Special.

Enjoy!

This Week on Treasure Island Oldies Week of April 16th, 2017

Week of April 16th, 2017 to April 22nd, 2017

As you noticed in the yellow box on our home page, the new chat room is installed, tested and approved. Again many thanks to Pat at dishnuts for graciously providing the chat server. The Chat Room is now accessible in two ways. Log on via our web-based chat or if you prefer, use mIRC. Just Click the Chat button and make your choice. We would warmly welcome you to drop by on a Sunday night to say hi to the listeners from all over who connect together with the music and conversation. I'd also like to thank Tom and Darryl of WTND-LP in Macomb, Illinois. They coordinated everything to do with the chat room with dishnuts, in conjunction with Rick Canode in Madison, Wisconsin, and together we're in business! Many, many thanks.

The cool thing about doing a live show is on most occasions I can accommodate a request as it arrives on the Island. As an example, this week I played Peter Rabbit by Dee Jay and The Runaways, as suggested by Rick, and then followed it up with another Wascally Wabbit song, White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane. In addition, Darryl mentioned how much he liked Chris DeBurgh and said what a nice guy is was when I knew him as an A&M Records artist when I ran the A&R Department for A&M. Darryl then said his favourite by Chris was Don't Pay The Ferryman. With the help of Guylaine in Quebec City, I played that song for Darryl just after the beginning of the 2nd hour. I also get requests that come in via email. If you'd like me to play a specific song, please let me know. Send an email to requests@treasureislandoldies.com

We're just a few weeks away from our next special, a milestone for the show and for Internet radio. It the 20th Anniversary of Treasure Island Oldies and we'll have a big party to celebrate Sunday, May 7th. We began back in 1997 of May 4th and have never looked back. I hope you can join me for the party and if you care to, send an email to me and I'll read your greeting on the air.

Do you have a birthday coming up? I'd like to help celebrate your special day by wishing you Happy Birthday on the air and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com

The Top Five Countdown on this week's show is from 1967. And the Number One song is a great father-daughter duet. It's Frank and Nancy Sinatra with Somethin' Stupid. It's playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog. Enjoy!

Oh I love this group! Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice presents one of the great R&B vocal groups, The Dells. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either There Is or Oh What A Night. I'll play the winning song on next week's show.

Here's this week's Rock and Roll News Podcast.

Have a great week.

The Dells - Voice Your Choice

The Dells first recorded as The El-Rays in 1953 for Checker Records in Chicago, later signing with Vee-Jay Records in 1955. The group consisted of Johnny Funches (lead vocal), Marvin Junior (baritone lead vocals), Verne Allison (tenor), Mickey McGill (baritone), and Chuch Barksdale (bass). The line-up remained unchanged into the 1980s, with the exception of Johnny Funches, who was replaced by Johnny Carter in 1960. Funches died January 23, 1998 at age 62, while his replacement Johnny Carter died August 21, 2009 at age 75.

These guys were hugely successful on both the R&B charts and the Hot 100 Pop charts, with 47 charted R&B hits, while they appeared on the Hot 100 charts a total of 24 times.

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, we spotlight The Dells with two of their amazing hits. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either There Is or Oh What A Night. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

Frank and Nancy Sinatra Number One Song This Week In 1967

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, the Top Five Countdown featured the year 1967. At the very top of this chart this week in '67, it's the great father-daughter duet, Frank and Nancy Sinatra with Somethin' Stupid. It's our Song of the week.

Enjoy!

This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of April 2, 2017

Week of April 2nd, 2017 to April 8th, 2017

Man oh man, the Name Game Special was fun! And so many songs with someone's name in the title. And despite the fact that it's a four hour show, I still only skimmed the surface of the long list of name songs. I was very pleased to get your requests and suggestions. You sure know your music!

Be sure to mark your calendar for our next special and it'll a milestone for the show and for Internet radio. It the 20th Anniversary of Treasure Island Oldies and we'll have a big party to celebrate Sunday, May 7th. We began back in 1997 of May 4th and have never looked back. I hope you can join me for the party and if you care to, send an email to me and I'll read your greeting on the air.

The Chat Room was in full swing this week and it was great to welcome Tom and Darryl from WTND-LP. They worked closely with Rick Canode to get the new chat room up and running. I'd also like to extend big thanks to Pat at the Dishnuts for allowing us to use their chat server and for setting up the new Chat Room. We have had no issues or glitches for the past three weeks since we began testing and it is very stable. If you like using mIRC, you'll be pleased to know that we should soon be able to provide the log in info via mIRC for you. Otherwise, please continue logging in via the chat page using our webchat. Either way, you'll be in the Chat Room with all the other Nuts in the Hut. More info as it unfolds.

It's my pleasure to wish Happy Birthday to Ineyda Velasquez in Dade City, Florida. And if you have a birthday coming up soon, please let me know. It's a tradition on Treasure Island Oldies to help celebrate our listeners birthday. Send the details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com and I'll wish you Happy Birthday and play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

It's a page out of history this week for the Top Five Countdown. Never before nor since has the Top Five songs all been by the same artist or group. That major feat was accomplished this week in 1964 by The Beatles! The Number One song is Can't Buy Me Move. It's playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Blog. Enjoy!

Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice presents one of the great instrumental groups, Johnny and the Hurricanes. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Crossfire or Red River Rock. I'll play the winning song on next week's show.

Johnny and the Hurricanes - Voice Your Choice

Johnny And The Hurricanes were one of the most distinctive sounding instrumental groups of the 1950s and '60s. Originally known as The Orbits from Toledo, Ohio, they went on to national and international acclaim with their Top Ten smash Red River Rock. They also had hits with Reveille Rock, Rockin' Goose, Crossfire, and others.

Sadly,  Lionel "Butch" Mattice, the bass player in the group, passed away in November 2006.

Treasure Island Oldies is pleased to present Johnny and the Hurricanes on Voice Your Choice. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Crossfire or Red River Rock. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

The Beatles - Number One Song on the Top Five Countdown from 1964

Never in the history of the music business has one artist or group occupied the entire Top Five positions on the charts until 1964. And it has never happened again since that one time. This week in 1964 as Beatlemania was exploding, the Fab Four had all of the Top Five songs.

Here in their order is the Top Five Countdown from 1964 that was featured this week on Treasure Island Oldies.

Number Five - Please Please Me
Number Four - I Want To Hold Your Hand
Number Three - She Loves You
Number Two - Twist And Shout

And here is the Number One Song by The Beatles - Can't Buy Me Love!

Enjoy!
