Billy Joe Royal Has Died At Age 73

Country and pop singer Billy Joe Royal has died aged 73, multiple reports confirm.

According to NBC's Nashville affiliate WSMV.com, Royal unexpectedly died in his sleep at his home in North Carolina on Tuesday.

In the sixties, Royal was signed to Columbia Records where he released hits like "Down in the Boondocks," "I Knew You When," and "Cherry Hill Park," which was his last hit in the Top-40 charts, according to Billboard.

After getting a brief taste of success, Royal reportedly moved through multiple smaller labels before settling down with Atlantic Records in Nashville.

According to Billboard the singer's most recent project was an album released in 2009 titled, "His First Gospel Album." Royal was added to the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 1988.

I really liked starting this week's show with Al Day And All Of The Night by The Kinks. Not is it only a great rocking song to get the show underway, it also reflects Treasure Island Oldies, available 24/7, All Day And All Of The Night. If you missed this week's or any week's live show, be sure to go to the Listen page and scroll down to the Archives section, where you can listen to the three most recent shows on demand.

The Platters - Voice Your Choice

The Platters were an R&B group formed in Los Angeles, California. The original lineup consisted of the amazing voice of Tony Williams on lead vocals, David Lynch (tenor), Paul Robi (baritone), Herb Reed (bass), and Zola Taylor. They initially recorded for Federal Records but really only met with success once they moved over to Mercury Records.

As the #1 vocal group of the 1950s, they had 70 songs hit the Billboard charts between 1955 and 1967, including 7 Top Ten hits and 5 Gold Records. With so many songs, it was difficult to select just two of them for this week's Voice Your Choice, but I did.

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice features The Platters, with just two of their many hit records. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either You'll Never Never Know or One In A Million. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

The Temptations - Get Ready - Song of the Week

The Temptations has many hits songs as one of the mainstay groups with Motown Records. This week the Treasure Island Oldies Blog is pleased to play The Temptations with Get Ready.

It's our Song of the Week.

Enjoy!
