This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of August 27, 2017

Week of August 27th, 2017 to September 2nd, 2017

I'd like to start this week's Island Update by congratulating Darryl Roberts in Macomb, Illinois, the winner of the

Blue Suede Shoes contest. Darryl correctly identified the 8 Elvis songs I plays on the August 13th show: Blue Suede Shoes, All Shook Up, I Gotta Know, Are You Lonesome Tonight, It's Now Or Never, Teddy Bear, Don't Be Cruel, and Hound Dog. Darryl is the winner of the soon to be released book Blue Suede Shoes The Culture of Elvis, written by Thom Gilbert. I'd like to thank all who entered the contest. My thanks as well to the publisher, Glitterati Incorporated for making this contest possible.

Be sure to join me on the show next week for the annual End Of Summer Back To School Labour Day Special. I'll play some great summer songs for the end of Summer, some fun school themed tunes and a bunch of work songs. That's all next week on Treasure Island Oldies.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to John Duggan in Ottawa, Ontario, and to Connie Kitten Howe in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. If your birthday is coming up soon, I'd like to know so that I can help celebrate your special day by wishing you Happy Birthday on the show and also by playing Birthday by The Beatles for you. Here's this week's Rock and Roll News Podcast.

Finally, before I finish off, I'd like to send my very best wishes to my very good friend Red Robinson. He did his final show, Red Rock Diner, on 650 CISL this past Sunday. After over 60 years on the air, this was his final show and also it was the final day for 650 CISL. The station has been sold and will turn into an all sports station by the new owners. I must say that Red ended his show in such a classy way. He said he asked his wife Carole what last song he should play and she suggested one that summed up his entire radio career. He played The Time Of My Life by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes from the movie Dirty Dancing. Way to go Red!

Thanks again for listening to the show. See you next week for the End Of Summer Back To School Labour Day Special.

Bye for now.

The Honey Cone - Voice Your Choice

The Honey Cone were an R&B trio from Los Angeles, California. They had a great pedigree even before they started recording together. Carolyn Willis had been a member of The Girlfriends and also Bob B. Soxx & The Blue Jeans. Edna Wright was the sister of Darlene Love, while Shellie Clark was a former Ikette. Pretty impressive!

Treasure Island Oldies presents The Honey Cone in the Voice Your Choice spotlight. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Stick Up or While You're Out Looking For Sugar. I'll play the winner on the next show.

The Elegants Number One Top Five Countdown 1958

The Elegants were from Staten Island, New Jersey and hit the charts in 1958 with their debut record, Little Star. Unfortunately , Vito Picone, Arthur Venosa, Frank Tardoinga, Carmen Romano and James Moschella, who had all been in other groups, were never able to repeat the success they achieved and became one of the groups who were One Hit Wonders.

However, in 1958 they were at the top of the charts and this week on the Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown, The Elegants are at the Number One with Little Star.

Enjoy!

The Diamonds - Voice Your Choice

The Diamonds were four guys from Toronto, Ontario who rose to stardom during the 1950s and continued into the 1960s. While Dave Sommerville was working as a sound engineer at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), he met three other guys who liked to sing just as much as he did. Dave Sommerville, Ted Kowalski, Phil Levitt and Bill Reed were the original members.

After auditioning for Cleveland DJ Bill Randle, they were introduced to Mercury Records which signed them to a recording contract. Their debut single was a cover of Why Do Fools Fall In Love, a big R&B hit for Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers. Overall they appeared on the Billboard charts a total of 16 times. But their breakout record, Little Darlin', was a cover a an R&B song by The Gladiolas and written by Maurice Williams.

This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of August 13th, 2017

Week of August 13th, 2017 to August 19th, 2017

I was very pleased to pay tribute to the late Glen Campbell on this week's show. He was a tremendously talented guitar player; was a member of the Wrecking Crew studio musicians in Los Angeles, substituted for a period of time for Brian Wilson as lead vocalist with the Beach Boys; and when he was signed to a record contract with Capitol Records, his career really took off. In my opinion, the best way  for me to pay tribute to an artist is to play their music people love to hear. It was also very poignant to play Adios, the title song of his latest album that was released in June. Glen Campbell, R.I.P.

Dusty Springfield Voice Your Choice

She was born Mary O'Brien in London, England on April 16, 1939, but you know her as Dusty Springfield. Very sadly, Dusty passed away March 2, 1999 at age 59 from cancer. She was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1999.

Dusty and her brother Tom Springfield, along with Tim Field formed The Springfields and had two hits under that banner, Silver Threads And Golden Needles and Dear Hearts And Gentle People.

Dusty split from The Springfields in favour of a solo career, and was that ever a great decision, as she scored 19 hits on the Hot 100 chart in Billboard Magazine.

On Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice spotlights the fantastic Dusty Springfield with two of her many hits for your votes. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either All Cried Out or All I See Is You. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

Week of August 6th, 2017 to August 12th, 2017
It's no wonder that the Instrumental Gems Wordless Wonders Specials gets so much response every year. First off the same show is not repeated year after year, and second, it is so rare to hear an entire 4 hours of great Instrumental Hits of the '50s, '60s and '70s. I know of no other show anywhere that features instrumental hits as a special. Thanks so much for your feedback and requests. It was great to play them for you. By the way, in case you missed out on a song title or artist, be sure to go to the Listen page and scroll down. That's where you can find the playlist for the show every week. And if you'd like to hear the show again this week, just go to the Broadcast Partners Network page to find a day and time then this week's show will be re-broadcast on one of our affiliate stations.

Buddy Knox was born in the small farming community of Happy, Texas, on July 20, 1933. When he got into high school, he teamed up with some friends and formed the Rhythm Orchids. After they performed on the same radio show in 1956, Roy Orbison suggested Buddy Knox approach producer Norman Petty in Clovis, New Mexico, who had produced That'll Be The Day for Buddy Holly and the Crickets.
