This Week on Treasure Island Oldies Week of April 29th to May 5th, 2018

April 29th to May 5th, 2018

It was fun to back together with you on The Island this week. Had a great vacation in Maui, that other island. LOL The Chat Room was filled with lots of good friends who all gave me a warm welcome home. Thanks very much. This week our Spotlight Year was 1966 and what a year it was for some fantastic music! As a  teenager, I always thought the Summer of '66 had some of the best records ever released. A few examples of songs I played include Paint It, Black by The Rolling Stones, Eddie Floyd's Knock On Wood, Stop Stop Stop by The Hollies, I'm Ready For Love by Motown's Martha and The Vandellas, and so many more. Even our Vinyl 45 of the Week, Nancy Sinatra's These Boots Are Made For Walking, sounded good and "scratchy". For a complete list of the songs I played on the show this week, please go to the Listen page and scroll down.

I sure hope that you can join me next week as we will celebrate the 21st Anniversary of Treasure Island Oldies. This is a milestone, not just for the show but for online and terrestrial radio, as it will mark one of the longest running weekly radio shows in the world.  My Webmaster, Eddy Fisher, asked me to thank you for all the great comments you've made on the cool 21st Anniversary Special video promo billboard. Love that revolving mic!

Speaking of my Webmaster, it is my great pleasure to wish Eddy Fisher a very Happy Birthday this week. In addition, long time listener, Marc Baillergeon in Montreal, Quebec is also celebrating his birthday. If your birthday coming up soon, please me know by sending the date to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the show and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

The Top Five Countdown this week is from 1966, this week's Spotlight Year. The Number One song is by The Young Rascals. Good Lovin' is playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

Listen to this week's Rock and Roll News Podcast.

In closing for this week, I wanted to thank you again for such a great welcome home from vacation and I sure look forward to your company next week as we celebrate the 21st Anniversary of Treasure Island Oldies.

Bye for now.

The Arbors Voice Your Choice

The Arbors were from Ann Arbor, Michigan, and consisted of two pairs of brothers: Edward and Fred Farran, and Scott and Tom Herrick.

They only appeared on the Billboard chart a total of five times, and one of those times they peaked at #114, bubbling under the Hot 100. However they recorded a number of memorable songs, including their cover version of The Letter, originally a hit for the Box Tops.

Voice Your Choice presents The Arbors. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either A Symphony For Susan (their first charted hit) or The Letter (their 4th single and biggest hit). I'll play the winner in the 3rd hour of next week's 21st Anniversary show.

This Week on Treasure Island Oldies - Week of April 8, 2018

April 8th to 14th, 2018

I had a great time once again this week with you, both on the air as well as in the Chat Room. We had a great turnout this week and it was so nice to welcome back and visit with friends including Sean in  Louisville, Kentucky, and Fay and Matt in Langley, British Columbia. I wanted to make mention of one of our recent new regulars, Bill in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Bill is a nurse and was on duty the night the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team had the horrific bus crash resulting in 15 deaths. Bill and many others devote their lives to helping others. Thank you Bill! And out hearts go out to the families affected by this tragedy.

This week we spotlighted the year 1968 and featured many songs from that year by The Equals, The Foundations, The Impressions, Cowsills, and many more, including the Top Five Countdown. It was also cool to play the Vinyl 45 of the week, Rit It Up by Little Richard. I actually played it from a 45 EP or Extended Play, with two songs per side. I'm really enjoying playing vinyl live on the show. Just like the old days! :-)

Next week is our annual Name Game Special, with people's names in the song titles. Be sure to have a listen, and these names will be like visiting with old friends once again. The special airs live next Sunday, April 15th starting at 6 pm Pacific time, and at various times throughout the week on the Broadcast Partners Network affiliate stations. Speaking of affiliate stations, I am pleased to welcome MCBVI, Michigan Counsel Of The Blind And Visually Impaired, to the Broadcast Partners Network. MCBVI will air the show Sundays at 3 pm Eastern. Be sure to check out their website at blindmi.org

Everly Brothers Voice Your Choice

Among the many popular recording artists of the 1950s and 1960s, the Everly Brothers, Don and Phil, rank pretty high up on the list. Don was born Isaac Donald on February 1, 1937 in Brownie, Kentucky. Phil was born January 19, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois. Both their parents were in show business as folk and country singers. Sadly, Phil Everly passed away January 3, 2014 from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; he was 74.

The Everlys first recorded for Columbia Records in 1955, but it wasn't until they signed with Archie Bleyer's Cadence Records in 1957 that their career took off. And what a way to take off; their debut record for Cadence, Bye Bye Love went to Number 2 on the charts and became a Gold Record.

Between 1957 and 1984, they hit the charts a total of 38 times, including 14 Top Ten, 4 Number 1 and four Gold Records. Phew!

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice is pleased to feature The Everly Brothers with two of their well loved hits. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either This Little Girl Of Mine or Ebony Eyes. I'll play the winning song on next week's show.

Bobby Goldsboro Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown 1968

This week on Treasure Island Oldies, the Spotlight Year is 1968. The top spot song is by Bobby Goldsboro, who already had many hits under his belt before this went to Number One.

It lasted at the top for five weeks and it made such an impact that sales reached Gold Record status.

Honey, this week's Number One song from 1968 is by Bobby Goldsboro.

Enjoy!

Michael

This Week on Treasure Island Oldies Week of April 1st, 2018

April 1st to 7th, 2018

It was no April Fool's Day joke; we had a fun-filled four hours of great music once again on this week's show. And this week we spotlighted the year 1964 throughout the show, including this week's historic Top Five Countdown. Never before or since has one artist or group held all five positions in the top five. The Beatles ruled. And so many other recording artists had smash hits in 1964. I was pleased to play The Zombies, the Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, Diane Renay, Dave Clark Five, the Angels, Major Lance and so many more great artists.

As a preview of what to expect in two weeks for The Name Game Special, I played Farmer John by The Premiers, Ringo's Theme (This Boy) by The Beatles producer, George Martin, and Long Tall Sally by both Little Richard and The Beatles. So you get an idea of what to expect for the special; every song with have someone's name in the song title. The special will air live Sunday, April 15th starting at 6 pm Pacific time, and at various times throughout the week on the Broadcast Partners Network affiliate stations. Be sure to include the date in your calendar.

I'd like to wish Happy Birthday to Ineyda Velasquez in Dade City, Florida.  Is your birthday coming up soon? If so, please me know by sending the date to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com. I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the show and also play Birthday by The Beatles for you.

The Top Five Countdown this week is from 1964, this week's Spotlight Year, and what a historic countdown. The Number One song is by  The Beatles. Can't Buy Me Love is playing at the Treasure Island Oldies Treasure Island Oldies Blog.

Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice presents Chad & Jeremy. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Willow Weep For Me or Yesterday's Gone. I'll play the winner on next week's show.

Listen to this week's Rock and Roll News Podcast.

Have a great week.

Bye for now.

Chad & Jeremy Voice Your Choice

Chad & Jeremy were two stars from the British Music Invasion era of the 1960s. Chad Stewart and Jeremy Clyde, both born in 1941, met at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London. During that time, Chad taught Jeremy to play the guitar and they went on to form a folk outfit called The Jerks.

Interestingly, they only had one hit in their native United Kingdom, and that was Yesterday's Gone. However in North America, they went on to have several more hits, including Willow Weep For Me, A Summer's Song, From A Window, and others.

Next week on Treasure Island Oldies, Voice Your Choice presents Chad & Jeremy. Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Willow Weep For Me or Yesterday's Gone. I'll play the winning song on next week's show.

The Beatles Treasure Island Oldies Top Five Countdown 1964

This week is historic to the music industry! Never before or since has one artist or group occupied all of the Top Five positions on the charts. It happened this week in 1964 when The Beatles had all five songs with Please Please Me in at Number Five. I Want To Hold Your Hand is Number Four, while She Loves You is in at Number Three, and Twist And Shout came in at Number Two.

Rounding out the Top Five this week in 1964 it's Can't Buy Me Love in at Number One.

Here are John, Paul, George and Ringo, the Number One hit-makers in the world in 1964!

Enjoy!
