I always get a chuckle from the billing of R&B singer Johnny Corley as The Fantastic Johnny C. It sure drew attention to his name, that's for sure.
He was born April 28, 1943 in Greenwood, South Carolina. Prior to graduating from high school, he joined the armed services and later he was a heavy equipment operator. He joined a gospel group associated with the Macedonia Baptist Church. It was during one of the rehearsals that he was heard by a fellow church goer and nearby neighbour, the producer Jesse James.
Jesse James wrote what would become the Top Ten debut single for Johnny C, and it's one of the songs in the Voice Your Choice spotlight on Treasure Island Oldies.
Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page for either Boogaloo Down Broadway or Hitch It To The Horse. I'll play the winner on next week's show.
