James Brown was an innovator. Period! He is one of the founding fathers of funk and soul music and regarded as one of the key music figures of the 20th Century. No wonder he is referred to as the Godfather of Soul.
He was born on May 3, 1933 in Barnwell, South Carolina, and raised in Augusta, Georgia. Died of heart failure on Christmas Day, December 25, 2006 at age 73. He formed his own vocal group, the Famous Flames with Bobby Byrd. And during his career that spanned six decades, he appeared an impressive 107 times on the Billboard chart between 1958 and 1986!
