Let
me begin this week's update by thanking my good friend Tom Locke for joining me in the studio this week during the first
hour for the mini special "You Got
To Start Somewhere". It was so interesting to hear some of the
background to the artists as they were just getting their careers underway. And
how fascinating to hear that the members of The Young Rascals had individually at one time or another been a
member of Joey Dee's backup musicians, The Starliters. And so cool to hear about David Clayton Thomas and The Shays, the group he was in before The Bossmen, and years ahead of
becoming the lead singer of Blood, Sweat
& Tears. It was wonderful to see Tom light up as he was talking about General Norman Johnson, both as part of
The Showmen and as lead singer for
the Chairmen Of The Board. Even
Tom's Moment In Tim feature in the
third hour was tied into the theme with The
Willows and Church Bells May Ring.
Thanks very much, Tom. It's always fun to have you as a guest on the show.
I'd
also like to say so long to the folks in McKinney, Texas,
who have been listening to the show on 99.9
The Crow. The station has now gone off the air and Jim, the station's owner and Program Director, is moving. He will
be starting a new station in late fall and Treasure Island Oldies will
be part of his new station. In the meantime, it's great to be part of both long
term and recent Broadcast PartnersNetwork of FM, AM and Online stations truly around the world.
A
couple of upcoming program reminders for you. Be sure to listen to our Annual Father's Day Special, LIVE Sunday, June 17th; and the
following week, June 24th, it's our Annual
Summer Beach Party. You don't want to miss either of these two specials.
However, if you are unable to hear the LIVE shows, the Archives will be available at the Listen page.
Lots
of Happy Birthday wishes go out this
week. Best wishes to Paul Carter Jr. (also
a weekly contributor to the show with
Music Link) in Ellicott City,
Maryland, to Al Locke in Vancouver, British Columbia, Tom Williams in Laguna Beach, California, Shana
Gutman in Delta, British Columbia,
Michael Gee in Berkeley, California and in Niagara
Falls, Ontario, it's Nancy Turnbull.
It's great having so many listeners and friends celebrating birthdays this
week. If you have a birthday coming up, be sure to let me know. Send the
details to birthdays@treasureislandoldies.com
and I'll wish you Happy Birthday on the show and play Birthday,
our official birthday song by The Beatles, for you.
In
keeping with our mini-special theme on the show, the Treasure Island Oldies Blog is playing the great General Norman Johnson and The Showmen
with the classic It Will Stand. It's
our Song Of The Week. Enjoy!
Voice Your Choice presents a huge Motown
Records star, Stevie Wonder with two
of his many, many hits. Would you like to hear I Was made To Love Her or My
Cherie Amour? Cast your vote at the Voice Your Choice page. I'll play the
winner in the 3rd hour of next week's show.
Here
is this week's Rock & Roll News for the Week of June 3rd, 2012
