I
was saddened and shocked with the news of the deaths of Herb Reed, the last of the founding members of The Platters, and the man who gave them their name, and former
member of Fleetwood Mac, Bob Welch. Herb Reed died at age 83
while Bob Welch was only 66 and died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds. He was
with Fleetwood Mac from 1971 to 1974 and was a key songwriter, guitarist and
lead vocalist during that period, including the classic early Fleetwood Mac
album, Mystery To Me. It was such a
treat to play Hypnotized, a song I've
always loved and never understood why it was never released as a single. I
think it could have been a smash. I also really enjoyed paying tribute to Herb
Reed by playing many Platters hits throughout the show. You can check out the Playlist at the Listen Page to find out which Platters songs I played.
I'd
like to draw your attention to the Vocal
Group Hall of Fame. It was started by Tony
Butala, the lead singer of The Lettermen.
The Hall is based in his hometown of Sharon,
Pennsylvania, and founded by Tony
as a way to give back to his community. The organization would like to relocate
the Hall of Fame and would also like to set up a museum in a far more centrally
located city. There's a wealth of information and entertainment for you to
check out and you can also purchase a DVD of their past concerts. In addition
you can support the Vocal Group Hall of Fame Foundation with a donation. I urge you to visit the Vocal Group Hall of Fame website. My thanks to friend and listener Jill Brown for letting me know about this interesting, entertaining and important organization.
